Drakenfall #1

A Drakenfall Christmas

Rate this book
In the spring, Mark and Maisy fell in love in the story "Upstairs, Downstairs … and the Lift in Between." Months later, the magic of Drakenfall is still in the air, and spiced with cinnamon and mistletoe as Mark and Maisy welcome guests and get involved in kerfuffles with staff as they celebrate their first Drakenfall Christmas together.

In an uncharacteristic turn, unflappable house manager Glynis Ferry seems to be getting her duster ruffled every time she catches sight of Shaun Fletcher, the new head groomsman. And Pippa Taylor, a whirling dervish of a domestic, works below stairs to make the magic happen for everyone else, but will there ever be enough magic left over for her? There will if most worthy valet Kafi Cholo has anything to say about it, as he tries to spin holiday magic every which way. But his best laid plans always seem to go awry, even with Maisy helping out as his faithful sidekick.

But what about his grandest of schemes, set to take flight at the Drakenfall Christmas Ball? He's depending on guest Jamie Tovell, who's depending on guest Lea Sinclair. And even if everything goes off without a hitch, will the secret Maisy's been hiding from Mark all season pop up at the most inopportune moment to set everything asunder? It's a Drakenfall Christmas … topsy turvy, but generously sprinkled with laughter and lavishly frosted with romance.

A Drakenfall Christmas was a really cute holiday book. Each page, character, and romance were magical from start to finish. I'll admit that I did get confused about some things during different parts but ended up enjoying the entire book. There were ups and downs throughout it as well.

Now I liked almost all the characters I met. Unfortunately, Pippa and I didn't mesh well. She just seemed so negative all the time and it rubbed me the wrong way. As for everything else, well it seemed chaotic at times but somehow everything made sense in the end.

Long story short, it was very entertaining. I enjoyed it all and look forward to the next book.

I've really enjoyed this book.

The story or better the stories are very well thought, planned and tied up in the end.
Every character is important and them all deserve to be happy and in love especially during the Drakenfall Christmas Ball.

I really liked the Christmas atmosphere that permeates every single page and made me all warm inside.

This was such a sweet treat of a read! It had the magical Christmas feeling that every holiday book needs, and as the Christmas season creeps closer, I find myself craving it more and more. Especially at the end of this crazy week, I think we’ve all seen some real ugliness as elections came to a close. I know I needed a pick me up, and this sure did the trick! I read this in one sitting, I was so taken with the world Corcillo created. The entire story takes place in Drakenfall, in the days leading up to Christmas. Drakenfall is a truly magnificent place and the perfect setting for a holiday book. Along with a festive, feel good spirit, love is also in the air for both guests of the resort and employees.

There are three sweet romances developing simultaneously; Pippa and Kafi (who both work at Drakenfall), Glynis and Shaun (also employees), and finally Lea and Jamie (guests). All three storylines are heavy on the sweet and cute side which is what I love the most in Chick Lit and Christmas novels. Besides the requisite romance, there is humor in the mix as everyone seems to be plotting and planning various things in order to catch someone’s eye. Maisy is the biggest schemer around, but she doesn’t have a malicious bone in her body and all of her mischievous plans are done with the best of intentions.

This was so lighthearted and adorable, with a real sense of mischief and magic always lurking in the background. The quaint setting of Drakenfall provides the most enchanting backdrop and the lovely cast of characters only adds to the ambiance. This is the perfect Christmassy read and one that brings a real sense of joy to the reader and left me with a grin on my face.

If I had to describe this book in one word, I would choose “magical.” This is also how I view Ms. Corcillo’s writing overall. I’ve read every single one of her books and have enjoyed each to the very last word. I immediately fell in love with Mark and Maisy in Ms. Corcillo’s short story, Upstairs, Downstairs…and the Lift in Between, so when I discovered there was more to the story, I had trouble containing my excitement! A Drakenfall Christmas gives us a delightful view into the life of the staff and guests of a quaint English resort I would honestly like to visit. (I know it’s mythical, but Ms. Corcillo really makes you believe it exists!) You will be hooked from the beginning, shirking all your responsibilities so you can discover what will happen next. Though Mark and Maisy’s romance is well established, they play vital roles in the success of three other blooming relationships. And who doesn’t like having them around? Grab a cup of hot cocoa and settle in for the long haul! These captivating characters will make you giggle, gasp and swoon as they take you on a truly enchanting holiday adventure.

Hallmarkie Christmas Great For Princess Diaries or Downton Abbey Fans. If you hit any of the fandoms listed in the title, you're going to love this book. Even if you don't, it is still a solid Christmas romance set in the realm of English nobility and the staff that maintain their homes. Lots of different moving parts to this one, including three four separate intertwining romances - which may be a bit confusing to some, but was easy enough to decipher if the reader sticks with the story. Very much recommended.

My only way of starting this is to give you a glimpse into the beginning of the book:

‘I flicked my thick braid over my shoulder, clawing wayward strands out from the front of my face. As I sped through the icy wind toward the harbour town, I pressed my knees into the stallion’s sides as tightly as I could. I urged the horse on, my skirts and petticoats flying about my waist. But I had to hurry. I HAD to. The Baron was depending on me.’

So I told told you about this book when I reviewed the excellent short story anthology ‘Love in an elevator,’ and then as a standalone here. It was written by Geralyn Corcillo, an inspirational friend of mine who I know solely through social media, and I was intrigued. I warned that I wasn’t sure I could review this, as it’s like when I was starting out reviewing crime and thrillers, if you don’t regularly read books of a certain genre, and in this case written in a certain manner, ie the way for example Jane Austen books are written, with beautiful words that beg to be read out loud, then you could be in trouble. So bear this in mind.

This book had a clutter of characters that somehow still managed to be distinctive and identifiable. They all had their own roles in the story and personalities that drew me in, asking that I find out about each and every one and the mysteries that enshrouded them. The setting was amazing, that of Drakenfall Estate, a large, as they call it, ‘country estate-turned-resort, with acres of land and a magnificent entrance that had me eagerly following along the various visitors as they arrived, left and went about their business. There was love and romance, bitterness and jealousy, more than a few secrets and even a curse. I warmed to so many characters (an exception, unfortunately was Pippa, who was so negative she drove me nuts!), and loved how the beautiful Christmas festivities warmed some chilled hearts. There were escaped cats, unruly children and mix-ups that regularly made me smile, as did the wonderful romance, so gorgeously done. This was a book I read at four o clock in the morning when I was in and out to my son and I have to say I devoured it. I don’t know what it will do for fans of this particular genre, but I do know that it ticked all the boxes for me. Very much recommended and I will be looking to see the next book in this series. Thanks so much to the author Geralyn Corcillo, and HCL author services for allowing me to be part of this great blog tour.

Geralyn Corcillo has created the perfect Christmas gift for us. If you’ve had a hectic day of Christmas shopping, make a cup of tea and curl up with this book. If you’ve decorated your house, sit by your tree and read this book. If you feel the need to capture the Christmas spirit and glow- read this book. If Christmas is your favorite time of year- read this book. Yes, read this book!

Author Corcillo has created many delightful characters, and the great manor house of Drakenfall is one of them. For centuries the seat of a Baron in the Cotswolds, the current Lord and his wife have transformed Drakenfall into a perfect resort. “Lord and Lady Shiley, as hardworking below stairs as they were delightful with the guests above stairs, truly brought the great estate of Drakenfall to a pinnacle it had never known.”

Guests at Drakenfall experience life on a fabulous aristocratic scale, including sumptuously furnished guest rooms and grand halls, gourmet meals, impeccable service and at the holidays all the trappings of a high society Christmas. But there is more to Drakenhall than grandeur. There is love and warmth, and it radiates from the Lord and Lady, who prefer to be called Mark and Maisy.

“It’s one of the things I love about Drakenfall. Everything has a story. It’s a place made up of all these people and their foibles and their hopes and concerns. And you know them all. You know about the people and their hearts and minds.”

“Anyone can be kind. But almost no one is.” “Isn’t that why we all love Christmas so much.”

“Drakenfall is a happy home to so many, a wonderful resort, a prosperous boon to the community.” And this book will be a happy read for you. There is so much to enjoy- the colorful and well-drawn characters, the story arcs of love and romance, and the hopeful message of kindness and goodwill

Even though I hadn't read the first book in the series Upstairs, Downstairs ... and the Lift in Between I quickly learnt who was who and didn't feel confused at all.

The characters all had their quirks and were well written and even though this is a novella I felt like I got to know them pretty well. There is a good mix of characters but not too many that the story loses its momentum. All of the characters work brilliantly together, they are basically one big family who look out for each other.

I loved the setting for this book and with it being set at Christmas it's all the more magical. It was great to see multiple stories threaded throughout. I never felt like I had to write down who the characters were and the story was also easy to follow. I have to say Glynis and Shaun were my favourite pairing and I loved their interactions with each other.

When I get the chance I will have to take a look at the first book in the Drakenfall series if it's anything like A Drakenfall Christmas I will definitely enjoy it.

Charming, romantic and engaging!

Five stars from me!

I love the story that Corcillo wrote for us and I must say it helped put me in the holiday spirit! I saw a review that said this book reminded the reader of Love Actually, and that's so true! There were so many different relationships and friendships woven throughout, and they all interconnected to create a truly lovely heart-warming holiday story. I loved all of the romantic relationships that developed and I loved the fun surprises throughout. Hands down another great read by Corcillo. Clever, cute and completely charming!

5/5 stars for a lovely holiday romance novel

A Drakenfall Christmas by Geralyn Corcillo
Geralyn Corcillo at KDP 2016 ISBN: 978-1-62678-016-3

Drakenfall resort in the village of Tippingstock is the place to be for Christmas. Owned and operated by Lord Mark Shiley and his American wife Maisy Potter, gives credence to the belief that magical things happen at Drakenfall. How else could an American girl have become the wife and true love of a Baron?

As the resort prepares for the lavish annual Christmas Ball, hope and expectation fill the air. Employees and guests alike wonder if they too might find a little magic and love this Christmas. But different cultures, social stations, goals and confusion collide and threaten to derail everyone’s chance at happiness.

The house manager Glynis feels that love, like the years, have passed her by. Pippa the maid is convinced that she is not worthy of Kafi’s interest, much less his affection. And when Maisy’s parents arrive on the scene unexpectedly, she fears her secret will ruin her charmed marriage with Mark.

A Drakenfall Christmas is entertaining, sweet and fun. The characters are an assortment of holiday gumdrops: colorful, rich, spicy, sweet, and even a sour one or two.

Geralyn succeeds in making readers believe that Christmas is indeed a magical time. In the words of one of her characters, ‘We enjoy the people who are always with us. We take time to experience the best there is to have right in our very own lives.’

And love is alive and possible more than at any other time of year.

Quirky, Multi-Romance Story

What an unusual story! If you like Christmas romances, you actually get several couples’ stories in this book. The novel is written in a light and nearly flippant way, which seemed odd at first until I got accustomed to it. There is quite a cast of characters in this book and a number of storylines going on. It did feel a little confusing at first, with so many people introduced so quickly and nearly everyone having their own plotline. The book itself felt a little confused about what time period it actually takes place in. It is clearly modern times, but many aspects seem to harken back to historical romances. It was fun, though, to watch the unfolding of these many romances and the interplay between all the people at the destination hotel. If you want to get a whole lot of Christmas romance in just one book and you don't mind a quirky story that is at times a little confusing, you may very well enjoy this book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I loved this book! The plot involves an England manor that's turned into a resort, run by a couple named Mark and Maisy. There are a lot of characters at play in the book, but the crux of it involved three evolving romances within the resort. I loved how different each of the romances, and none of them felt conventional to me. (Side note: It's my pet peeve when every romance involves people in their twenties or early thirties, but this book does not!) I was impressed at how Corcillo managed to juggle so many characters and make them all distinctive and engaging. This book definitely got me in the holiday spirit. Another winner from Geralyn Corcillo!

Enjoyed this immensely. It was a little hard to get used to the characters at first, but probably because this is the second book in the series. But once I was acquainted with them I had the feeling I was right there with them. A most enjoyable Christmas tale, and without anything but clean healthy fun.

Lord Mark and Lady Maisy Shilley are preparing to celebrate Christmas at Drakenfall at the Cotswolds resort. There are three different romance storylines developing between Pippa Taylor and Kafi and Glynis Ferry and Shaun Fletcher who all work at Drakenfall and Lea and Jamie who are guests. This heart-warming story of friendship and love relationships is a wonderful holiday romance read.

Quick read

I enjoyed this sweet English Christmas story. Fast paced so you move through it quickly. There were some spelling errors, but they didn't pull me out of the story. One thing I didn't care for was a chapter assigned for each scene resulting in 52 chapters.
