A cowboy story. The first one I read. I liked it, it has the exact amount of action, romance, danger, and even humor. A very entertaining novel. Agile. That does not tire. A protagonist who hates women and who promises never to marry. A protagonist besieged by a white-collar criminal. The mix makes for a tumultuous encounter. With many twists and turns. With some silences, with a lot of action that seems to have no end, and with a predictable but no less good outcome.
Setting is Dry Gulch, Montana, 1880, and this is book #1 of the Delaney Brother's trilogy. This book dragged a lot for me. Pierce was running because he is wrongly accursed of beating a girl. Hides in the basement of Zoey....yadda yadda yadda.
No surprises, no twists. Got tired of all the "distrust" of women because of his "mamma issues," too. Blah!
Agh I couldn’t stand Pierce at all! Such a manipulative, possessive and arrogant hero. The other Delaney brothers were cut from the same cloth too. For someone who hated women, they sure did love stringing women left and right. I also got tired of Pierce’s demeaning stance of marriage and women. Women this, women that. He decided to sleep off his frustrations with a new woman right after the divorce yet he couldn’t accept Zoey taking another lover. Such a hypocritical bastard! I am sorry I can’t stand reading about a man going for a new woman after a third act breakup. It’s just so low. Ughh Zoey deserved way way better!!
This is a reread many years later. And honestly I liked Zoey until the middle end. This chick was so stupid. Trusting Walloughby, telling him about her baby, and etc. I read this book for the first time in junior high school in 2000. Go figure it's 2020!
Oh, Boy!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. When I read line by line, page by page I know it's got me captivated. So many twists and turns. Good book. Will definitely read again.
This was a good one, it's like on old fashioned western, but a lot sexier. Set in 1880 Montana, you have the H, Pierce Delaney, embittered and cynical when it comes to women (due to betrayal by both his mother and ex-wife), yet having to rely on one when he's shot and takes refuge in the root cellar of her ranch. You have the h, Zoey, strong and independent, yet scared and vulnerable, and desperate to save her ranch, leading to her going against her principles and blackmailing Pierce into marrying her, which further reinforces his view of women. You have the villain, Sam Willoughby, determined to get both the ranch and Zoey, and being the bad guy in every sense f the word, not one redeeming characteristic in this total creep. (If this was an old silent film, he'd have tied Zoey to the railroad tracks while twirling his moustache.)
There's action, drama, and a love story that doesn't overdo it with a lot of arguing, insults and self-righteous anger, which too often bogs down other novels. Pierce has a lot of issues and fights his feelings for Zoey for a long time, but he never mistreats her. He made it clear that, having been trapped into marrying her, he expected his conjugal rights, yet he never forced her, For her part, Zoey didn't pretend indifference; she admitted her desire for Pierce and there was no forced seduction, just mutual lovemaking. Also, while some might see her actions as wrong, when she left Pierce with no choice but to marry her, she more than made up for that when she puts her safety on the line more than once to help him, and decides to leave him (despite her love for him) because she thinks he wants his freedom and she wants him to be happy.
I won't give away more details (except to say that Willoughby turns out to be more horrible as the story goes on, and that goes double for the sickening man who sets Pierce up from the start), and will just recommend you check this one out, I don't think you'll be sorry.
Classic old time historical romance set in 1880 Montana that was action packed with steamy love scenes, dastardly villains, and a hero who doesn't believe in love ... enjoyed it all. Vigilante mob chases and injures Pierce, He manages to hide out in Zoey's root cellar.
