Bridget Anderson began writing after moving from Louisville, KY to Atlanta, GA and has published several romance novels, and two novellas. She recently re-released her first three novels, “Soul Mates”, "Rendezvous", and "Lost to Love" as e-books, available on Amazon Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and most other e-readers. She’s working on getting her entire back-list out as e-books. “Rendezvous” which was turned into a made-for-television movie by BET is also available for rent on Netflix.
She currently resided outside of Atlanta, GA where she’s writing her butt off trying to get a new novel out. When she’s not writing, she's traveling. Two of her favorite spots so far, Ghana, West Africa, and Paris, France. Bonjour!
I actually started this series reading Book 3 which I thought was really cute so now I'm working on reading the entire series. Having a Black bed and breakfast with an attached farm immediately sucked me in. I love rural set Black stories. I'm not a nature person and very much a city girl so these give me that country fix.
At first it moved very slow and I wasn't sure it would grip me but then it amped up the drama and I was hooked! Corra is part owner of her family's B&B and a single mother with two young children. She reconnects with her childhood crush who also happens to be her older brother's best friend. Turns out he's been feeling her for a long time. And just as things are heating up between her and Chris, her no good ex husband, Eric shows back up in town. He's ready to be back in his children's lives after having abandoned them in favor of gambling and spending some time jail.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Corra and Chris. They had great chemistry together and their long time friendship was so easily picked back up after so many years. I liked seeing them interact with their families and that their dynamics with them had just enough depth that it felt like I really knew them. I liked how he embraced her kids because it's so important for people to realize single parents are a package deal.
Corra Coleman and Chris Williams have had a crush on each other since high school, thought they neither admitted it to the other. They went their separate ways and never admitted anything. Chris is now a very successful businessman who is looking to return to his roots in the small town of Danville, Kentucky. Corra is content with her new job working at her family’s bed and breakfast and is fresh off of a divorce.
Now that Corra is back on the market, Chris is determined to finally be with Corra after all these years; to show her that a relationship with him might be exactly what she needs.
What I liked: Corra was a single mom and I loved seeing the dynamic between her and Chris and her children. I would love to see more writers explore the single parent romance.
What I didn’t like: The romance was very tame, to say the least. They were supposedly attracted and in love with each other since high school but I didn’t get that; there weren’t any sparks that I could relate to. There was more telling than showing.
The conflict was kept at a bare minimum in this book. There was potential in the subplot of Corra’s ex-husband, Eric. He hadn’t seen his children in two years, showed up and clearly had a drinking problem, and may have been involved in the vandalism to Chris’s property. The last dust-up was right towards the end of the book when it was insinuated he may have been stalking Corra. They put him in a cab after he was on her porch drunk. He left without too much hassle and we never heard from him again. Excuse me? How does that it even make sense? Eric clearly had a vendetta against Chris, are we supposed to believe that he just shrank away from their lives quietly? It was an underdeveloped storyline.
The synopsis tricked me in a way too. It led me to believe that Chris would have to fight to show Corra that he was worth a chance over her ex-husband. Spoiler alert: that didn’t really happen.
Unfortunately, this book had more cons that pros. This book is a part of a series and for readers like me who perhaps hadn’t read the first book, a bit more backstory would have been helpful. I don’t need to know everything that happened in the previous book but bits and pieces so I wouldn’t feel left out would’ve helped a lot.
However, this was my first time reading Bridget Anderson’s work and I’m willing to give another book a chance. I assume the Coleman House series will continue with Tracee, so I’ll keep an eye out for that.
Anyone else read this book? If so, what did you think?
Love the second time around can be as full of surprises as first-time affections. When the woman in question has two children in tow and an ex-husband on the prowl, matters can get very dicey indeed.
I like how Corra and Chris are both pursuing their dreams in their small town. She’s not a dependent miss waiting for some man to take care of her and he’s been in fervent pursuit of his goal since he was a small boy. While they’re undeniably attracted to each other, she’s firm in stating that her children come first.
However, Corra’s no-account ex-husband shows up and throws a spanner into the works. It’s clear that Eric is still struggling with his own demons—hanging around with people of whom Corra disapproves, failing to make appointments, and showing up at her house drunk and hostile about Corra’s new boyfriend. I thought this side plot had a great deal of potential.
But time and again, when I expected him to show up and create trouble, he was strangely absent. No one seemed to know what he was doing back in town; his talk of an appointment was vague and without a corresponding address; he spoke of a job or getting a job but no one followed up on that. Finally, he accosts Chris in what would seem to be a showdown only to be shooed away in a taxi and neatly excised from the story. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?! If you’re going to introduce a bad guy into a plot, you need to give him more threat and a more dramatic exit than that!
While this romance was interesting enough, I thought Eric’s supposed reappearance was a weak point that should have been stronger or omitted altogether.
Book two in the Coleman House series is another page turner. We met Corra Coleman and Christopher Williams towards the end of book one. The ups and downs their story takes are real life issues. The interaction with secondary characters give pause to what happens when things go wrong.
