Wow. From what I understand, this is his first book he has published, and I really enjoyed it. It seemed a little short, but that could be because I wanted to keep reading it. For those that like Fantasy, this was a lot of fun. He definitely has a knack for fleshing out characters quickly, and has no problem killing someone off if it helps the storyline.
You'll really enjoy getting to know the king from other people's attitudes, then when you finally meet him, there's a pretty big surprise. Definitely a setup for a second book (I think it's supposed to be a trilogy?); the main conflict is resolved, but there is a bigger backdrop that gets revealed, which I'm sure will come to the forefront for the next book.
