A personal selection by Britain's master humorist of seventy-two pieces from the thousands with which he has delighted readers for the past forty years. It is, in every sense, essential Coren.
Often brilliant (and brilliantly funny), sometimes esoteric, and occasionally uncomfortable as Coren dallies with a bit of racist humour. Because of the latter, not quite 4 stars.
Almost every collection has good and bad stuff. The 'bad' stuff in The Alan Coren Omnibus would qualify as the good stuff in many other collections, and the good stuff here falls between very, very good and outstanding.
All (70 or so) stories are based on short notes (3-5 lines long) printed in British newspapers and are between 3-6 pages long covering pretty much every subject matter imaginable.
As a whole this is one of the funniest books I have ever read in my life, and I've read some 2000+ so far.
I am ashamed to say that Alan Coren has eluded me for 40+ years, but I promise I'll try and make up for it. The next one is on the shelf already.
The Omnibus saw me through a recent bout of flu. Despite feeling absolutely awful, I found myself laughing out loud at Coren's collection of his own favourite columns. Some of the material is dated, but like all good humourous writing it remains gloriously funny.
This is a collection of 72 humorous articles by Alan Coren. As with all collections, they are very variable in quality, but the best ones are very funny indeed. It's a book to buy rather than to borrow, and to dip into rather than read straight through.
I really enjoyed most of it, but I would've to admit that some of it were way over my head. Even after reading the whole thing and LOLing at times, I have a nagging feeling that I've missed a lot of good stuff.
How can anyone not appreciate Coren ? The blessed Coren is sheer enjoyment. Quintessentially English humor and aimed at people who enjoy good writing. I've lost my Corens and this is all that's left. Keep dipping it into it because it's so awesome
