Black Squadron's been locked away in a Republic prison! But they're not locked in there with us, they're locked in with…Terrex?! Can Poe and co. get the info they need and get free?
Charles Soule is a #1 New York Times-bestselling novelist, comics author, screenwriter, musician, and lapsed attorney. He has written some of the most prominent stories of the last decade for Marvel, DC and Lucasfilm in addition to his own work, such as his comics Curse Words, Letter 44 and Undiscovered Country, and his original novels Light of the Jedi, The Endless Vessel, The Oracle Year and Anyone. He lives in New York.
These Poe Dameron comics started off very rough, however this prison break arc is super fun and I am really enjoying it. What we get here is a nicely done mix of prison riot action, cybernetically enhanced Hutt gangs, and droid vs droid combat.
If these continue at this quality, this~30 or so issue long Sequels era comic book adventure is actually going to be alright.
Not too much happens in this one until the end. The rest of Black Squadron are waiting for Poe to return from his meeting with Grakkus the Hutt when he does, they learn what we did at the end of #4 - Agent Terex has also got to the prison and Grakkus will only give his information on Lor San Tekka to one of them. Namely, whoever can get him out of prison...
Again, the dialogue is spot on and there's one line: "You know Poe, he could charm the pants off a Hutt. And they don't even wear pants." which is particularly memorable (not to mention it could easily apply to both the character *and* the actor). Grakkus is a fairly typical Hutt - from what we know of the species, you knew it wasn't going to be easy for Poe to get the information out of him and I look forward to seeing how it plays out in issue 6.
3.5/5. Still really good but this is the first time I've been left this frustratingly unsatisfied by an issue of this series. Nothing happened to really advance the plot, and there were only two occasions when we got new insights into characters, and both of those were only minor insights. I was expecting a little more from this issue, especially since the wait was two weeks longer than normal.
It was nice seeing Papa Toren from the Lando comics so that each series can continue to feel more connected. I also liked seeing the astromech droids become key players, and the giant droid is neatly designed and menacing, but it obviously won't be killing BB-8. We also finally get the name of the planet in the first arc (Ovanis), which is long overdue.

The graphics are still really good. The whole action sequence with the droids team. So cute and amazing. Yep I love this series. Can't wait to see how they get out of the jam they are in. Go BB8 and friends.
Another issue where the antagonist is far more interesting than the hero. I like Poe, but he does a lot of waiting in this. Art continues to be gorgeous.
