Annamalai), என்ற புனைப்பெயரில் எழுதும் வெ. அண்ணாமலை நன்கறியப்பட்ட தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர். இமையம் முதுகலைப் பட்டம் பெற்றுப் பள்ளிக்கல்வித்துறையில் ஆசிரியராகப் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார். தனது முதல் புதினமான கோவேறு கழுதைகள் மூலம் தமிழ் வாசகர்களுக்கு அறிமுகமானார். இவர் எழுதிய செல்லாத பணம் என்ற புதினத்திற்கு 2020-ஆம் ஆண்டிற்கான சாகித்திய அகாதமி விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது. எனினும் இராசு கௌதமன் போன்ற தலித் சமூக அறிஞர்கள் தலித்து சமூகத்தின் அவலநிலைகளை மட்டுமே முன்னிறுத்துவதாகவும் மேல் சாதியினர் புகழக்கூடிய வகையானதாகவும் இப்புதினம் உள்ளதாகக் குற்றஞ்சாட்டுகின்றனர்.

He is also the recipient of the Agni Aksra Award, the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association Award, the N.L.C. Award, and the Thamizh Thendral Thiru.V.Ka. Award, among others, and has been honored by the governments of Kerala, TamilNadu and India.

நல்ல சாவு : பத்து வயசில ஒரு பொட்டெ புள்ளெ இருக்கும்போது பிரிசன் சேக்கப் போயிருக்காளே.

அம்மா : நடக்க முடியாத காலத்திலியும் நானே ஒயச்சி நானே திங்குறன்.

நாளை : அவுங்க அவுங்களுக்கு அவுங்க வாய் வயிறுதான் முக்கியம்.

Video Mariamman and Other Stories by Imayam (pen name of V Annamalai) and Translated from the Tamil by Padma Narayanan is a collection of 14 short stories that address issues of oppression brought upon by patriarchy or social norms, caste prejudices, acute poverty and how it weighs down on farmers who have nothing to depend on except their toil in the fields. The stories are mostly set in a rural or semi rural ambience but in contemporary times where education and jobs are the order of the day but prejudices still remain entrenched.

Each story starts out on an innocuous note: a brief description, a conversation, a domestic scene and then slowly, the layers get revealed exposing the deep schisms and divides that fester and remain. Another common aspect to the stories is how the author anticipates reader responses to the stories and plots playing themselves out by putting in a character in the narrative who grapples to come to terms with what is happening to someone else: be it a police officer trying to reason with a fellow caste member to hold on to his job or the staff at a school who is giving her ear to a mother who comes searching for her daughter or a villager trying to explain to his media friend that there is nothing out of the ordinary happening in his village.

I felt a sense of being worn down by the situations in the stories while reading them and then realised that it could be an intentional writing approach to bring home the way in which life today continues to be a relentless cycle of oppression for people who try to find some sense of sanity in a world that is spiralling out of control.

மனிதர்களிடம் உள்ள சண்டை, புறக்கணிப்பு, சாதிய வன்மம், துரோகம், ஏமாற்றம், ஏக்கம் என்ற எண்ணற்ற குணாதிசயங்களை கதையில் உள்ள மாந்தர்கள் வழியாக விளக்கி இருப்பார்.

Found myself lost in translation a couple of times. A collection of quirky short stories touching on domestic and caste-ridden, societal themes in the rural landscapes of Tamil Country.

Perplexing stories. Abrupt ending after plodding along with the drama. Quite a let down. Makes you feel incomplete. I went WTF. Disappointed. Dissatisfied.

Fell for the whimsical book cover and title.

My only favourite story was 'Stolen Girl' from this collection.

The translation I'm afraid was literal. Understanding the context becomes a challenge if you are a non-Tamil reader.

இயல்பான வாழ்வியலும் ஒரு இலக்கியம் தான் என இமையம் மீண்டும் நிரூபித்து காட்டுகிறார். "சத்தியகட்டு" கதை "ஒரு புளியமரத்தின் கதை" யை ஞாபக படுத்துகிறது. தோஸ்த்தோய்யேவ்ஸ்கி இன் "The Brothers Karamazov" ம், ஆல்பர்ட் கம்யூ இன் "The Myth of Sisyphus" ம் நமக்கு வற்புறுத்துவது ஒன்று தான் -- உயிரோடு இருப்பதும், அன்பாய் இருப்பதும் மட்டுமே அவசியம் என்று.

எளிய நடைமுறையில் எளிய மனித வாழ்வியலில் இதை இமையம் உணர்த்துகிறார். இதில் உள்ள எல்லா சிறு கதைகளுமே இதையே தான் உணர்த்துகின்றன.

"Existentialism" என்று சொல்லப்படும் இருத்தலியலை மிக சிறப்பாக இந்த கதைகள் நமக்கு வெளி காட்டுகின்றன.

Imayam’s short stories in this collection say a resounding yes to the question that the city slickers, the privileged ask when they are confronted and made uncomfortable by the reality of rural life, and by coming in contact with the awareness of how the system is controlled to continue benefitting them and allows them to stay in power — ‘It is 2021. Such things don’t happen anymore! Really?’ Through these short stories, Imayam reports — the victims of caste-violence, the farmers who continue to lose their land to the capitalists and the state, the abuse and alienation rendered by technology, elderly abuse by youngsters who are cornered by the system themselves, the psychological suffering that even the oppressors suffer but don’t recognise because of the toxicity, and women whose lives are mired in the mesh of every other type of oppression — as though he gently wipes our rose-tinted glasses clean just to sharpen our vision. When he reports the stories of those whose voices are strangled, he doesn’t bookend them with his views on the ideal ways for the society to operate. He simply narrates the stories, deposits them in our laps, and doesn’t wait to see what we do with the stories. But the stories continue to live in me, wait to see what I do with them, and tease my conscience if the force of old ways wrestle with the awakening.
