A Tale of Two Dragons

Braith of the Darkness likes going through life unnoticed. Not an easy task for a She-dragon of royal descent. But the evil plots of her father are turning her quiet, boring life upside down, and she has now become the enemy of the most vicious queen her kind has ever known. But for once, Braith won't have to fight alone. Not when the warrior dragon of her dreams is willing to risk everything to save her neck. Addolgar the Cheerful wishes he could say he's helping the pretty royal strictly for honorable reasons-but he'd be lying. It's not his fault, though! He didn't tell Braith of the Darkness to have the most delicious tail he's ever seen! Yet before Addolgar can get his very strong claws on that tail, heads are going to roll. Just hopefully not theirs . . .

As usual with G.A. Aiken this novella was made of awesome. This author knows how to make you laugh your ass off with just one line and still manages not to seem cheesy.

In this short-ish story Addolgar, uncle to our favorite dragon siblings, and Braith find love through a series of hilarious adventures. I won't say much on this. I ust advice everyone who likes Fantasy and Paranormal Romance to give these books a chance!

Audio March 2019: I had a blast listening to A Tale of Two Dragons. I love this series. The narration was wonderful. Highly Recommended!

Reviewed in 2013

I love this series! I have been a fan of G.A. Akien/Shelly Laurenston from the first book I read The Dragon Who Lived Me in her Dragon Kin series. I then had to start from the first book Dragon Actually; because I wanted more Sexy Smart Talking Dragons and the women whom complement them.

A Tale Of Two Dragons was so much fun. I loved learning about the aunts and uncles of the Dragon Kin family. It is great to see how they become mated.

This story is about Addolgar the Cheerful, Bercelak’s elder brother and Braith of the Darkness. It's filled with action, danger, and smoking hot romance. In true Aiken fashion, the storyline is awash in humor, sarcasm, witty rhetoric and the distinctive voice of the Cadwaladr Clan.

I will never get enough of this series. I love learning about the Cadwaladr Clan. If you are looking for a Dragon series I recommend trying this one out. Aiken knows how to keep her readers entertained.

I really liked this novella this time. It is absolutely adorable. The way that the author writes the dialog is so entertaining.

I like that the hero is badass, but also silly. I love that this is kind of slowburn (at least for a novella). The hero was a bit slow to fully notice the heroine, but I like how devoted he became.

⭐⭐⭐
3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

A heroine that is tall and sturdy but also very physically strong.

Some little bits of the humor.

Some little parts of the story was a little interesting.

➖ What I disliked:

A little bit repetitive.
(Many things …. but one is about how handsome the heroine thinks the hero is etc.)

The humor was a little OTT and not that funny for the most part.

The bickering between everybody and the weirdness and very OTT bickering of the Cadwaldr family/clan.

Inconsistencies‎.

That the heroine was so OTT in her quest in being noble and like her mother…. Even to the extent that it would get her killed if not others stopped her.

Plot-holes/believability/plausibility issues and contradictions.
(Even for a Fantasy/Paranormal romance ...Here and there about many things…. But some very obvious ones about the heroines relatives/family/clan.)

The romantic build up and chemistry was unconvincing/stilted… and there was no real “spark” or love between the main characters…. There was a kind of friendship there and there was some lust but not really any love/connection.

Some parts of the book is a little too formulaic and copy and paste from other books in this series.

The heroine was the strong silent type which is good/OK … and it is understandable to a degree that she feels invisible and unloved because of her awful father …. up until the heroines mother passed away.... The heroine had a strong and loving but also supportive mother that taught her many good things …. and when she had to or wanted to she could and did protect herself etc. …..So why would she be so insecure and compare herself etc.?
And she also came from a clan etc. with very strong and capable women.
And that she so easily believed her father and his lies about her mother’s relatives was a little strange among other things.
The heroines entire personality and background just felt inconsistent and contradictory.

Too tame and watered-down compared to the other books in the series.

Even-though I have read some of the other books in the series and I have a grasp on the other family members, clans etc. and some of the world-building …. the world-building and the family members etc. just feel chaotic and confusing.

The weirdness with how almost all men/males are said to be himbos or stupid and whorish or just stupid…. And it is pointed out and said a lot.🤨

Even for a novella ….. this book needed more depth and development to the plot and main characters etc.

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice of the hero.
(Tall, muscular/chiseled, very handsome)

The steam/sex scene was lackluster.

This a slow read for me actually. It was fun, though.

Nothing impresses me than a kick-ass female. So I wasn't surprised by Braith the Darkness digging her to me. She's loyal, and fierce, honor-bound.

Addolgar the Cheerful is my kind of alpha-male, and he is fun, too!

There's humor in the story, and fun. Although, I guess I didn't quite get some of their banters. Also, I may have droopy eyes at some parts of the books.

But all in all, this has been a good and fun read! Yep, I know. I keep repeating fun. ;)

Full disclosure: Shelly Laurenston is an auto-buy for me. I adore her humor and her wit. The worlds she has created with her Dragon Kin series (under the name G. A. Aiken) and her Pride series are fantastic. They’re raw, engaging and hilarious. So yes, I’m a fan of her work, and I am not disappointed in this latest entry to the Dragon series.

The Premise
[from publisher] Braith of the Darkness likes going through life unnoticed.

Addolgar the Cheerful wishes he could say he's helping the pretty royal strictly for honorable reasons--but he'd be lying. It's not his fault, though! He didn't tell Braith of the Darkness to have the most delicious tail he's ever seen! Yet before Addolgar can get his very strong claws on that tail, heads are going to roll. Just hopefully not theirs. . .

The Good
Yes, they’re dragons, but other than the occasional reference to scales, claws and flying, the main focus of the story is on the characters themselves, their thoughts, feelings and their motivations. Braith is a wonderfully strong heroine who manages to be shy yet powerful. She is honorable and saves the hero just as much as he saves her. Addolgar is an easy going, hunky dragon that Braith has loved from afar for a long time, but he’s pretty much oblivious to it. The secondary characters, many of whom you are introduced to in earlier books in this series, really enrich the story and their snarky banter is as good as ever.

The Just OK
I would have preferred a bit more definition to Addolgar’s personality. I think that the love scenes, while still hot, have been better in other entries in this series. Yep, that’s about it.

The Bottom Line
If you love Shelly Laurenston/G.A. Aiken’s writing, you will not be disappointed in this book. If you’ve never read her books, I’d start with the first ones in each series (Dragon Kin Series: Dragon Actually; Pride Series: The Mane Event or Magnus Pack Series: Pack Challenge). Even if you’ve never tried paranormal romances, these are ones to give a shot - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

A TALE OF TWO DRAGONS is another prequel novella from G.A.Aiken and her Dragon Kin series. This is Addolgar and Braith’s storyline. Addolgar is an easy going and ‘cheerful’ dragon; one of Dragon Queen Addiena’s warriors; son of Aileen the Wicked and Shalin the Innocent; and one of Bercelak’s elder brothers. You remember Bercelak? Father of Fearghus, Briec, Gwenvael, Keita, Eibhear? And yes, we meet a young Bercelak as he once again encounters his future mate the princess Rhiannon.

Braith of the Darkness is a reluctant royal whose mother and father never bonded. Her father’s lineage is all about the sons while her mother’s is all about the daughters. Believing herself unattractive and unloved following the death of her mother, Braith has remained in the back ground until now. Ordered by her father and Queen Addiena to accompany the Queen’s daughter, Braith is surprised to learn that Addolgar the Cheerful will be one of the escorts. Braith has always had a bit of a crush on Addolgar and in his presence, Braith becomes shy and withdrawn. But the queen’s daughter has other plans and Braith will find herself Addiena’s target when her father sets out to betray the throne.

In true Aiken fashion, the storyline is awash in humor, sarcasm, witty rhetoric and the distinctive voice of the Cadwaladr Clan as they push and shove their way into each other’s heart and our own. And we learn just how far Aileen the Wicked’s slutty ways have travelled when Braith’s own family is well connected and known to the elder Cadwaladr dragon.

Aiken’s style of writing is a true testament of her ability to weave humor and sarcasm into a storyline without sounding snarky or trying too hard. The way she is able to pull the reader into the storyline with the colorful characters and sibling rivalry between dragons allows the reader to experience the emotional highs and lows, as well as entertaining us as we travel the skies with the Cadwaladr Clan and the dragons of Aiken’s Dragon Kin series.

thank you G.A. Aiken for creating this such an amazing dragon world .

Kraliçe Rhi'nin eşi Bercelak 'ın kardeşi Addolgar the cheerful'un Braith of the Darkness ile tanışması ve aralarındaki ilişkinin gelişimini okuyoruz. İkili braith'in hain babasını yakalayıp kraliçeye getirme görevleri sırasında yakınlaşıyor ve sonunda eşleşiyor.

A Tale of Two Dragons continues on with the trend of strong female leads and equally strong men hell bent on protecting them. Braith simply doesn't want to be noticed by anyone. EVER. To her sticking to the shadows and observing is better than actually having to be involved with all the snooty royalty she's surrounded by. However, there is one dragon in particular she always seems to notice, even if he doesn't see her..yet. Addolgar is a cheerful dragon known for his battle skills and way with the ladies. All the ladies wants his attention and affection, except for one, the only one that matters to him that is.

In this tale Braith is in serious trouble, like about to lose her head trouble, even though she's done nothing wrong. She's the victim of hateful family and spiteful royalty, to them she's the best target to take their anger out on. Honorable Braith feels it's better to take the punishment then to bring disgrace on her family, but Addolgar isn't exactly up for that plan. It's up to him and the Caldwater clan to protect Braith and find the people who've laid blame at Braith's feet. Only thing is, she may not want their help or let them help her at all.

I really liked this short story, it's always fun to get these tid bits of the different stories featured throughout this series. Getting tales of all the older dragons kinda makes you giggle when they're finally introduced into the series, specially when their children make appearances.

I'd definitely recommend to G.A. Aiken and dragon fans in general who enjoy humor and romance. This definitely can be read as a standalone novel, so if you just wanna take a peak at her writing, this is a great place to start.

This is 18+, there are sex scenes.

Heh. I like these dragons. They're bloodthirsty and more than a little crazy and they're SO MUCH FUN. *rubs hands together in glee*

So. Braith and Addolgar. She's a little tongue-tied around him and he's a little clueless around her. He's also INSANELY impressed by her fighting skills. Except, it's more innate ability than anything taught. Which, honestly, impresses him even more. Because dragons like their ladies feisty and Braith is plenty feisty once she gets over her tongue-tied shyness around Addolgar.

We get to see more of the various members of the Cadwaldr clan (Heh. Those guys!) with an added bonus of a clan of seriously badass lady warriors.

This whole series is working for me. I am SO IN!

The Dragon Kin series has been on my TBR for a long time. I've read a few of the Shelly Laurenston books and have become interested in the dragons she's written as G.A. Aiken.

I'm a big dragon fan so was eager to jump into this series. A Tale of Two Dragons is an introduction to this world and the characters within it. The setting is quite that of fantasy, which I normally have trouble with. I found G.A. Aiken's world to be light and fun. The snarky characters are great, while we get some good action and political drama.

This is a short novella and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can't wait to continue on in this world and meet more of the characters G.A. Aiken creates.

The narration by Hollie Jackson was fun. I thought she did a great job of bringing out the personalities of the characters. The impression I got of Addolgar the Cheerful was funny and that was definitely brought out in the narration of his character. Can't wait to continue on in this series. This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

CORI'S REVIEW:
I love this series! The Dragon Kin series is a fun and sexy dragon shifter romance series. G.A. Aiken is one of my favorite authors because her books are always fun, entertaining and keep me laughing throughout the story. A Tale of Two Dragons is Addolgar the Cheerful and Braith of the Darkness's story. It's filled with action, danger, and smoking hot romance. It's a novella and although I wish it were longer because I can never get enough of these books, it felt like a completely romance story. I highly recommend this novella and this series for paranormal romance lovers looking for a hot romance with some laughs.

DONNA'S REVIEW:
Reading the story of Braith and Addolgar was fun, passionate and made me wish for more. G. A. Aiken once again portrayed a strong female and the male who earned her love through adventure and desire. This back story to my favorite dragons was a nice addition that reminded me of the fun and adventure of her previous books. The way the characters banter and carry on is true entertainment and I will be reading this one again. I only wish it were a full length novel as I just can’t get enough of them.

No spoilers...

Oh I do love G.A. Aiken!

I've been waiting for this book for ages, and it was a rewarding wait at that! Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!

Storyline: excellent.
The land masses G has created continue on, as does the hierarchy of the dragons involved, and the the politics (which in any other book, bores me to death) are all still here, as are the characters.
All it takes is to throw in one new character and bring that family to the front, twine it between what has already gone on before, and BANG, you've got yourself a fresh new story from a different angle.

Sounds simple really doesn't it? Well I can tell you it's not that easy.

Happiness factor: excellent.
Do you know one of the things I truly love about G's work? Is that there's no repetition. G does not treat the readers like dumbos just because they may not have read the previous book/s. In other words, there is no rehashing of things mentioned in past books, so no boring bits for those of us that have. On the other hand, G also does not leave a new reader wondering what the heck just happened. G's books can be read as part of a series, or as a stand alone.

Wanting more? Always!
I love how there's always a twist or two in the books, and this one didn't disappoint. I still laughed, still smiled, and still shook my head at the characters portrayed. You see that's it... you have to get so sucked into the story that the world around you disappears and you laugh, cry and giggle along with them?

Only thing I don't like: having to wait for the next book. (I know it will be worth it though.)

Read as part of a bundle. Also note that the series sequence 0.2 is correct, but it was written after #4, so will feel out of sequence.

This may be the least compelling couple in the series, but it tells an important part of the history of the dragon politics. It also further explores the relationship between two dragons, as several other books discussed dragon and human pairings.

Still, there isn't a bad story in the series.

This was a very good story. I liked that the hero, Addolgar, is the son of Ailean & Shalin, the MCs from Can't get Enough from Everlasting Bad Boys (Dragon Kin 0.1)

Braith of the Darkness is a dragoness that prefers to go unnoticed. She's of royal blood but doesn't like the royal's political games so she pretends to be uninteresting so no one will pay attention to her. Braith's mother died a while back and her father has never had a use for her so she's been on her own and able to trust no one.

Addolgar is a dragon warrior in service to the Queen (of the dragons) along with pretty much his whole clan. His clan is large and boisterous and full of great fighters that make others hesitate to take them on. They're also very loyal so if you take on one of them, you better be able to take them all on. Addolgar is a good male but a bit on the thick side at times.

Braith and Addolgar both get called to the capital and end up in an audience with the Queen. Braith gets forced into being s female companion to another female dragon being escorted home. Addolgar is assigned to be in charge of escorting them safely. While Braith is usually more standoffish with most people, she is excessively shy with Addolgar...because she's been crushing on him for a while. It's rather funny because when Addolgar's sister happens to ask him what he thought of Braith's looks, he said that he couldn't judge them because she'd never raised her head to look him in the eye. Thankfully, this trip forces Braith to get past her shyness around Addolgar and gives them a chance to get to know each other.

The time for them to get to know each other ends up being a very good thing because this was not an insta-love at all, it takes them a while to get there. There were a few times in the beginning when Addolgar seemed a bit ambivalent about Braith and made me question them as a couple. However, with more time together and the hardships they had to face, Braith comes out of her shell more and more and Addolgar finds her more and more attractive. There is some political intrigue in the story that puts Braith at risk and Addolgar and his family step in to help her out. It takes some time and effort but things do get settled nicely in the end, allowing Braith and Addolgar to begin a HEA together.

This was a very enjoyable story. I liked Braith, especially once she reconnected with her kin and started letting out her inner warrior and becoming more sure of herself. Addolgar was a good guy but he could be a bit thick at times. Overall, I liked the characters and the story was very good and engaging so I'd recommend it. :)

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a good job overall. My one complaint is that while the narrator did alright at Addolgar's voice, sometimes it came across a little halting and/or stiff. It wasn't bad enough to ruin the story but it's something to keep in mind.

(Mar) I do enjoy flashbacks of the Cadwaladr Clan. Here we have Addolgar the Cheerful, older brother to Bercelak and Ghleanna. He's a pretty easy going dragon, happy to fight and eat and do what dragons do. Braith of the Darkness (what a name) is a very large She-Dragon whose mother died eons ago, leaving her to the not-so-tender care of her dick-of-a-father. Isolated from her mother's side of the family, a royal by birth by not by action, she seems to be a lady in waiting for lack of a better comparison, who is asked by the evil Queen Addiena (mother of the future Queen Rhiannon) to go on a mission, set up by her father. Follow me so far? Oh, and Braith also has an unrequited crush on Addolgar, who has never really noticed her. Addolgar and Braith go on this fool's mission, and a lot of stuff happens w/other dragons, and if I tell you anymore I'll ruin it for you!

Filled w/GAA's trademark humor, violently bitchy She-Dragons and slightly stupid but adorable He-Dragons, this was more of a novella than a short story. And, as with pretty much everything GAA writes, I loved it! It also introduces us to Brigida, the older-than-dirt ancestor of the Cadwaladr Clan, who plays quite an important role in Light My Fire. I'll be honest - not really sure when I saw Addolgar fall in love, but he was just so cute and earnest and if he says he loves her, I'm totally believing him! It was also nice to see a GAA Dragon book where mothers actually loved their daughters! Braith's kin was fun, wouldn't mind seeing them again!

Addolgar: Charming. Straightforward. Adorably goofy.

Loved how Braith transformed from someone who kept to herself to someone cheerful and truly happy, with the help of Addolgar.

“—and I’m being unreasonable.”
Addolgar nodded. “See? You do understand.”
Eyes closing, Braith sighed once more, her head dropping into her open hands. “I can’t believe I once thought you were adorable.”
“Really?” Addolgar grinned. “You think I’m adorable?”
That’s when Braith dropped to the bed, using a pillow to cover her face.
“Wait. Does that mean ‘Yes, I think you’re adorable’ or ‘No, I don’t think you’re adorable’?”

***

“You are awfully surly this morning.”
“The pain in my leg is brutal. My head hurts because I think I’m hungover from your aunt’s blasted ale. And you haven’t kissed me yet. So, aye, I am surly. I’m allowed to be surly!
A sentiment bellowed at Braith. And one that made her giggle.
“What’s so funny?” he grumbled.
“You’re much more terrifying when you’re cheerful. When you’re surly, you just sound like a cranky hatchling.” She thought a moment before adding, “Like Bercelak.”
“There’s no need to be so bloody rude, Braith of the Darkness!”

***

“Fuck me, Braith of the Darkness,” Addolgar told her. “Fuck me before I destroy everything just to get to you.”

Series: Dragon Kin #0.2
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Addolgar the Cheerful, son of Aileen and Shalin, is called before the queen to protect a Lady heading home. Braith of the Darkness is ordered by the Queen to be the lady’s companion and keep her company. This trip leads to the uncovering of a plot to overthrow the queen.

I really liked Braith of the Darkness. She was such a kickass woman. She took no shit and had no problem beating the crap out of Addolgar and his family. Addolgar the Cheerful was an adorable, charming, goofy, and sometimes an idiot. I quite liked him. He really understood Braith and way of thinking. He did everything he could to make her happy and helped her find her happiness, which I adored.

These two were complete opposites but their relationship worked perfectly. They balanced each other out and worked well together. I am really loving the Cadwaldr family. They are so crazy and deadly. Also, the Penarddun women were badasses and I hope we see more of them in future books.

Be with has had a difficult life and so she expects little in the way of happiness content just to be allowed to spend her time alone in her cave. After her father betrays the Queen leaving Braith to face the music alone she knows her life is over , only hoping for a quick death. Addolgar sees things differently and together with his Cadwalladr kin he is determined to help Braith...........whether she wants him to or not............... So, off the two set out their task to find and but thank Braiths father to face the Queen's with for she will have someone's head for distressing and isn't too fussy on whose........

This short story was filled with what I come to expect from this series, lots of violence, lots of snark, and lots of hot sex. I really liked how Braith seemed to come into her own by the end of the story. That she realized that she was loved by her family and by a man. Addolgar had me laughing, mostly because he was so clueless. I loved that Addolgar managed to hold his own with Braith and her family.

I have skipped all around in this series, and I have to say, this book is my favorite one so far. The dialogue was not only funny, but action packed. I adored all of the characters. Also, the epilogue could very well be one of the best I've ever read. I cant wait to read more of this series.

I just CAN NOT get enough of this series! I am just absolutely obsessed! Once again G.A. Aiken has created a hilarious, witty, and sexy novel of gorgeous dragon shape shifters! I highly recommend this book to anyone familiar with the Dragon Kin series!
