Children's book illustrator, author and paper engineer. Creator of many books including Dinosaur Roar!, Ten Terrible Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs Galore, The Christmas Bear, One Bear One Dog, A Number of Dinosaurs, Truck Jam and Big Dig.
Originally published in 1994, this is the 25th Anniversary edition of Dinosaur Roar by Paul Stickland and includes a beautiful poster at the end of the book. It depicts the different dinosaurs – from small to large; tall to short; fierce to meek – with exceptional illustrations to delight the child as it’s read to them. Highly recommended.
With thanks to Pan Macmillan AU for my copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
*https://theburgeoningbookshelf.blogsp... Dinosaur Roar! immediately catches the eye with its striking silver foil cover. It features a fiercely roaring T-Rex with a small dinosaur looking suitably unimpressed. Inside is a double spread with all sorts of dinosaurs to feast your eyes on; every shape, colour and size imaginable.
The wording is simple and kept to a minimum with large text that jumps off the page. The illustrations are vibrant and whimsical, with emphasis on each dinosaurs features and expressions bringing them to life on the page.
A fabulous read for all enthusiastic dinosaur fans that will eager to have the book read over and over, each reading being an educational experience with the use of opposites in the text and a natural cadence in the rhyming of words.
The Dinosaurs may be different in many ways but they all come together at the end.
At the back of the book is a gorgeous pull-out poster, featuring all the dinosaurs in their colourful glory, which can be framed and would delight any toddler. This book is now ready to be discovered by a whole new generation. *I wish to thank the publisher for my copy to read and review.
A book geared for probably kinder to possibly latest grade 2 but you never know there is always people who enjoy children books at any age!
A nice book about introducing opposites between dinosaurs (sizes, shape,etc)..The illustrations are fantastically colourful. It is another book that uses rhymes so you can use that to your advantage getting the children to repeat after you, getting them involved and engaged.
*https://mrsbbookreviews.wordpress.com Dinosaur Roar! penned by writing duo Paul and Henrietta Strickland recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, Dinosaur Roar! has received a great facelift. It has a shiny silver cover, an endorsement sticker from the Natural History Museum and this new edition also has an extra bonus dinosaur poster as the back of the book. For any dinosaur lover (I have two of my own) Dinosaur Roar! is a must-read!
Now regarded as a children’s classic, Dinosaur Roar! is a fantastic book to begin your dinosaur learning journey. Suitable for young children, this picture book helps to educate young children in the variety of dinosaurs that once existed, while subtly teaching them about opposite categories. A book to be enjoyed as a family favourite, a bed time read, or a read aloud in an educational setting. The rhyming opportunities in the book will be sure to delight!
Who doesn’t love dinosaurs? As a child growing up, I would pour over books that featured these prehistoric creatures. Dinosaur Roar! is a book that came out a little after my own childhood, but I am now very lucky to possess the opportunity to share this title with my own children and it was a wonderful experience. Each page delivers a new surprise, as we were able to meet a different dinosaur at the turn of a page and learn their unique quirks. It really is an accessible way to learn all about dinosaurs!
The illustrations featured in Dinosaur Roar! are very vibrant. The watercolour technique is used to full effect, giving a sense of animation to each and every dinosaur. The Stricklands have considered size, shape, colour and expression when designing their dinosaurs. Each illustration compliments the unfolding prose, which I appreciated for its use of adjectives and rhyme. These illustrations are perfect for young and curious minds!
As a family, we enjoyed sharing and discussing this book together. We debated over our favourite dinosaurs and why we liked each of our choices. We also agreed that the dinosaur lunch page was quite hilarious, as we enjoyed observing the dinosaurs munch away on their bones!
As we read an updated version of Dinosaur Roar! , we noted that a website link was included on the very back page, http://www.dinosaurroar.com. Do check this out if you have a dinosaur fan in the house!
Boisterous, playful and eye-catching, Dinosaur Roar will be sure to please young readers. Grab yourself a commemorative edition of this twenty-five year old children’s classic today!
I wish to thank Pan Macmillan for providing me with a free copy of this book for review purposes.
Really fun look at all types of different dinosaurs - great art! This book would be a very good interactive book - asking a small child to make the roar of the different dinosaurs! I rate dino books based on what I would have liked as a small boy (I was really into dinos) and I would have really liked this book way back then (and I do mean way back)!
A favorite book with kindergarten students. They love the drawings of the dinosaurs. The simple text is great for beginning readers. Also a great book to use when teaching verbs.
I found this book to be fun and perfect for children in kindergarten and the first grade. It was not a hard read and i thought it was perfect for teaching children about dinosaurs, their different characteristics, and some of the things they do. The book basically described a dinosaur and then compared it to its total opposite. However, many of the times i found it to be very funny in its comparisons. Like when it compared a tiny dinosaur to a really fat one. The book overall can be really fun as it has a rhythm. I also enjoyed the colorful illustrations that helped me get a better idea of the comparisons being made. Im not sure if a child would be able to differentiate the dinosaurs without the illustrations. I think this book would be fun to use in class if i had a dinosaur theme lesson plan. Overall, really fun book!
I have to say I don't believe there are that many great read aloud picture books for dinosaurs! I have been doing story times for many years now and probably dinosaur story time annually.
I used this book for Friday's PreSchool Class at the library in place of another that was not successful for the Tuesday group. It is simple, the illustrations are colorful. The text is short, so once again I had the listeners (adults too) repeat the 2 word phrases after me on each page. I used theatrical voices, hoping the listeners would too and they did. This was an excellent opportunity to encourage parents to read like this with their children. I explained how children when they first learn to read, read in a monotone voice when they read aloud. This way of reading can provide ways for children to learn how create excitement when they read by changing their voice.
This is a picture book about dinosaurs, but this is not what it’s only about. The author uses adjectives to describe the dinosaurs in the book. The reader realises that dinosaurs come in all different shapes and sizes, strengths and weaknesses and heights and lengths. The message at the end is that ‘all sorts of dinosaurs’ eat their lunch, which was not predictable in the book.
This is a great book to read to young children during a PSHE lesson as it shows diversity with animals and it can be related back to us humans. It also gives a great message about eating their lunch if some children struggle in this area and the author uses onomatopoeias to emphasise this.
WIDER READING FOCUS: Adjectives/Opposites/Dinosaurs "Dinosaur Roar" introduces its readers to the beasts you would encounter in the prehistoric era. Beautifully illustrated with depth of colour. It doesn't actually name the dinosaurs but the drawings are based on the real things including the infamous Tyranosaurus Rex and the more gentle Diploducus. The text is based on the concept of introducing adjectives such as big, small, fast and slow and utilises rhythm and rhyme in the phrases.
Target: a book for early years foundation or early KS1 stage. It could be used for a starter activity to introduce opposites in a listen and repeat chant.
The front of this children's book is super eye catching with its shimmery silver cover and glorious dinosaur, and there are multiple more fun dinosaurs to look at inside making all sorts of dinosaur noises. But the story isn't captivating at all, it's really just descriptions of dinosaur appearances, and that just isn't enough to compel a toddler to choose this book more than once.
So, the illustrations and pull-out poster get a thumbs up for sure, but the narrative was a bit of a flop.
PB 50!!!!: THIS BOOK IS SO CUTE BECAUSE IT TELLS KIDS ABOUT EMOTIONS. IT HAS A GRUMPY DINOSAUR AND A SWEET DINOSAUR. YOU CAN INCORPORATE FEELINGS INTO THIS BOOK. ITS ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SO COLORFUL TOO.
A fun little book, probably best geared to the preschool set. Entertaining illustrations of contrasting dinosaurs--like dinosaurs roar, dinosaurs quiet, etc. Very colorful and a quick read.
Young or easily scared 2yo might find some of these a little scary (there are some huge teeth!) but it's an interesting book of opposites, designed to appeal to small dinosaur fans.
Fun illustrations, cute rhyming, and clever ending. Perfect beginning early reader book, but also engaging for infants (yes, my almost 10 month old grandson loves this, and it is his favorite go to read before nap time). Audience favorite for sure. Not too long, perfect for a infant, toddler, or beginning reader.
2.75 stars Since this compare & contrast read for little ones. I felt this Could’ve been clearer image-wise, I felt ss the reader I had to add on to the story. The images were great, but again not clearly defined to show clear contrast for a preschooler. If you the reader were over 5 this book would be fine. But someone past the age of 5 would find this boring.
We read this today for our Prehistoric storytime. We had already talked about adjectives and this book fit in perfectly. We had a broad age range but they all seemed to enjoy this book - plus they got to roar. Never underestimate the power of roaring in storytime.
This is one of those rhythmic, rhyming, funny books with emphasis on adjectives, this time describing the characteristics of brightly-colored, extremely funny dinosaurs. Unlike Byron Barton's Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, this one emphasizes humor rather than scientific accuracy, it's unclear which historical beasts these animals represent. Their descriptions are simpler, presented in predictable, rhythmic text: "dinosaur sweet, dinosaur grumpy, dinosaur spiky, and dinosaur lumpy." On the final page the carnivores are depicted gnawing on bones, and the herbivores devouring trees, while a smiling tyrannasaur munches on the letters.
This is a fast read, with all the characteristics that make it perfect for toddlers who require humor, rhythm, predictability, and a short attention span. It's perfect for one-on-one reading or for a group. Available in paperback or board book format.
Dinosaur Roar! By Paul Stickland (Picture Book) I bought Dinosaur Roar! for my daycare children because it was a favorite from the library. This book gives children a comparison between different types of dinosaur shapes and sizes. Dinosaurs of every shape and size race, roar, and stomp through this colorful book of opposites. The art is fantastic; the "story" is simple but effective; and I enjoy making sounds and hand motions to go along with each page. While the language in this book is a bit simplistic, the illustrations and layout are great. Overall the book is great. I will use this book in my daycare to teach children colors by looking at the colorful illustrations and it will also teach children the concept of big, little, and small. I also love to make sensory boxes to go with my books as I read them. My sensory box for this book would include dinosaurs in different colors and sizes for children to compare them. This book would be good for children ages 2-5.
