Gabriel is a Stone Bear-one of the the elite shifters trained by the Lionshead Mining Consortium to protect their precious goods. He's given up almost everything to be the best at his job, including the chance to take a mate. But after meeting his boss's new assistant, he can't help but wonder about the possibilities. Gabriel can withstand just about anything a shifter can throw at him in a fight, but when it comes to this strong, gorgeous, and witty woman, he finds himself weak in the knees. Could she truly be the one? Caia Rowan is tougher than she seems. Hired straight out of school to go through training as a police negotiator, she's seen her fair share of the ugly side of society. So when she's offered a job in Genesis Valley, the harsh lifestyle and brutal nature of its inhabitants doesn't faze her. But the tall, utterly intoxicating, and surprisingly well-mannered bear shifter she's partnered with has the butterflies in her stomach doing circus acts. As the pair investigate a series of odd occurrences within the Valley, they find that they can't ignore the tension growing between them. But one wrong move could cost them not only their jobs, but their lives. The darkness invading Genesis Valley is more perverse than either of them suspected, and it will take the power of their bond to burn it away. Can they survive the journey, or will the brash actions of one doom the other?
Amelia Jade loves to write the stories of tall, growly shifter men and the women who come to love them. Living out in the back-country near the mountains, she keeps her own alpha male close by, to keep the bears away and keep her warm. In her down time (which is rare), she loves to read science-fiction with a dash of fantasy. You can often find her curled up in front of the real wood-burning fireplace, her nose firmly buried in a book or her favorite ereader. The cold can't bother her there!

It is an acknowledged fact that living in Genesis Valley means you work for the Lionshead Mining Consortium (LSM). A mining community that relies on paranormal shifters to do the hard back breaking physical labor required but does come with good pay and benefits. The one problem with having a high population of predatory shifters is that there's always the risk that at any time a shifter could give in to their base animal nature and go rogue. That's where the Stone Bears come into play, keeping law and order while protecting the company's interests.
Getting burnt out in her law enforcement career, Caia Rowan gets a job working for Marcus & Valen Kedyn as their personal assistant/office manager. Though no longer profiling or analyzing body language or behavior, she still finds those skills useful especially when her boss gives her an assignment to team up with a Stone Bear to investigate missing shifters and rogue behavioral issues that have the potential to affect humans.
Gabriel has risen in the ranks of Stone Bear officers by being the best at what he does. His total loyalty to LMC is apparently acknowledged when he's offered a promotion into a newly created Sentinel division that will oversee not only the paranormals but human populations residing in Genesis Valley. His first assignment is to partner up with Caia Rowan to investigate several missing shifters who have disappeared into thin air.
Stone Bear officers are not allowed to have relationships but will his new role as a Sentinel be a loophole in allowing him to proceed on the secret fantasy crush he's had for Caia?
New to me author who provided a very interesting read that does include adult content romance between the central characters. I was so taken with this story that I am definitely going to grab other books published by her sooner than later.
This book/series premises a world that openly acknowledges paranormal beings but does have a degree of fear about them which is why they aren't living mainstream (for the most part). The paranormals in general are governed by a dragon shifter council though they only involve themselves for extreme or major issues that affect the paranormal world at large so for the most part individual shifter communities independently govern themselves. In this series, LWC is lead by gryphon shifters.
The world building did give me some degree of confusion but I'm not sure if it's because I haven't read any other series by this author (in which case it would have made more sense) or it was a case where factoids in the world building weren't adequately addressed. My guess is it's the first but ....
I like the overall mystery/suspense/who done it format to this story though it didn't end with a big reveal. To be continued with multiple open possibles in the bad guy/bad element side of things which is why I will be grabbing the next installment. Had enough of a draw for me to WANT to continue on.
As for the relationship dynamics between Gabriet & Caia. I was doing my high five happy dance when it became apparent Caia was the dominant in their sexual escapades calling the shots. And Gabriel was good with that. One sensual scene had me turning up the A/C as the two got down and dirty to my utmost satisfaction. Well, it COULD have been more graphic and indepth but guess we can't always have what we want. Regardless, it's not often I get to read a book that features a strong female non-BDSM type story.
The cast of secondary characters will more than likely feature in solo installments in the future. There are quite a number of shifters and personalities so I'm sure different readers will gravitate to different characters to look forward to in the future. OK. No lie. I did a search to find out if/when Marcus & Velan will have their butts handed to them but so far no luck in finding that. But. I look forward to whatever female will take them on either individually or as a pair and hope, pray, trust, that whoever it is resembles Caia.
I am a fan of the book (DID I MENTION IT'S FREE RIGHT NOW ON AMAZON) and encourage fans of paranormal romantic mystery/suspense to check it out. The story is well told with a cross appeal for both male and female readers.
This was a very good story. I liked both Gabriel and Caia and enjoyed seeing them get together. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough I will probably try more of her work in the future. I will say that this story worked as a standalone but this series is obviously a spin-off of another series and there are a few things mentioned that are obviously carryovers from previous stories.
Caia is an expert in body language and reading people's reactions. She was hired by the police but things didn't work out so she ended up working for the Lionshead Mining Consortium as the assistant to one of the owners.
Gabriel is a bear shifter that was orphaned as a child. He was taken in by the dragon shifters that oversee the shifter community at the age of 11 and was trained for 10 years to be a Stone Bear...a bear shifter that provides security and more and is very dangerous and skilled at combat.
Gabriel is the head Stone Bear at the mining operation and has been noticing some issues with out-of-control shifters that are causing more trouble than usual. Gabriel's boss calls him in and asks him to work with Caia on the case, hoping that her training will help find them to find the root of the issues. The attraction between Caia and Gabriel is instant but because the mining company doesn't allow relationships between co-workers, they try to hide their attraction. Not that it lasts long and once their walls fall, Caia and Gabriel can't stay away from each other. They are able to concentrate enough to work on the issue at hand and although they don't get to the complete bottom of it, they're able to resolve the most immediate problem, assuming that the rest will probably be taken care of in future books. By the end, Gabriel and Caia are together and starting on a HEA.
This was an enjoyable story. Caia was a good heroine and a likable character. She was strong and smart, only making one move that was unwise and even that was understandable. I really liked Gabriel and thought he was a great hero. Overall, I liked the characters and the story was good and engaging so I'd recommend it. :)
Gabriel was a stone bear and wasn't allowed to take a mate much less fraternize with employees. Caia was human but something about Gabriel drew her in. But she liked her job to much to get involved. But when they have to work together to discover what is going on with shifters things start heating up. I really enjoyed the book. Plenty of suspense and romance.
This had the potential to be such a great book but it fell short in a few key areas. Now, I don't mind instalove books at all....however, where are the details and plot of how their relationship forms more deeply?? It literally jumps from lust to love and skips a week or so. No depth at all! At first, I had such high hopes and then all the sudden is was like chapters were just missing. They have hot and heavy sex and then the next chapter starts and it's stuff like "He opened up about his childhood this past week" and now I know why he is the way he is type of stuff.....uh, hello! I would like to know about his childhood too! Like I said, I don't mind that characters fall in love fast, but I would like to see WHY and HOW they do it.....I need to feel that connection and this just didn't give me that. The action and overall plot is good....but come on, we need details and descriptions. The writing seemed rush. Such wasted potential in this book for me.
Gabriel is leader of the Stone Bears shifters protective, semi military detail that guards the interests of the Lionshead Mining Company. And as stoic, terrifying and grim as Gabriel is to most, he is sweet to Caia. She is quite taken with him. But they both work for LMC and now they are investigating some strange & dangerous occurrences in their town. This is a well plotted story of mystery, intrigue and the development of a loving relationship. The bringing together of a community of shifters is interesting and sets up the basis for what promises to be a great series.
Another good story in this bear shifter series, this needs to be tread in conjunction with the Jade crew series. This is a full on hot and heavy shifter romance with a big brute of a bear Gabriel and a feisty sexy lady Caia. There is plenty of hot bedroom action mixed in with intrigue mystery and cruel fight scenes. Everything and more you could want from a good shifter romance. Really good read.
Gabriel is a guard for Lionshead Mining Consortium, for the Kedyn twins. Caia just started as a secretary. When they meet, sparks fly. Marcus and Valen Kedyn out them working a case together. Shifters have been acting aggressive and acting out in Genesis Valley. Can the two of them find the cause before it gets too out of control while they are constantly drawn together?
I read this as part of the Jade Crew that helps explain some of what’s going on in the Jade Crew story line. Of course now that I’ve read book 1 I will definitely read books 2 & 3 of the Stone Bears, as soon as I finish The Jade Crew. I enjoyed the interaction of Gabriel and the other Stone Bears. So now I have to see what happens with them. It was a quick read and I’m finding I really like the way Amelia Jade writes.
Stone Bear: Sentinel by Amelia Jade is an entertaining paranormal book. Ms. Jade has delivered a well-written book. The characters are fun and lovable. Gabriel and Caia's story is full of drama, suspense, humor, action and sizzle. I enjoyed reading Stone Bear: Sentinel and look forward to reading more from Ms. Jade in the future. Stone Bear: Sentinel is book 1 of the Stone Bear Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I really enjoyed this book. The editing is excellent--no egregious glitches such as unnecessary apostrophes or outstandingly poor grammar. The pace is quick, the dialogue engaging, and the romance well done. I like the originality of gryphon shifters, even though they're secondary characters. It's a very good story, but not possessing the "wow" factor that would make it a 5-star book.
It took me awhile to figure out what was Genesis Valley so there wasn't a lot of explanation and it left me wondering for quite a while. I did like the characters and the way they were developed. The story itself though just didn't resonate with me because of the idea of so many shifters being so bad and just death and destruction!
One bear shifter and one female human work together to stop a new and deadly problem in the mines.
Action and romance, Dragon shifters, griffin shifters, bear shifters, and humans work together to control something that is driving bear shifters crazy. Some spicy scenes, and a happy ending for two amid a battle that is just the opening of a war to come.
I like this new take on shifter stories. Great mystery as well as nice love story. The romance is there but takes a backseat to the mystery which is nice. I like that there is some resolution but enough to keep you wanting more. Very refreshing and satisfying. I'm anxious to start the next one!
Another good read from this author. This is the first book I've read of this series, but it was a good set up for the characters to have their own book in the series. A little romance in a paranormal world.
A good read for people who are in to the series recommend highly can't wait for the next one of the series a really enjoyable read but quick shaping up to be a enjoyable series must read the next one of the series
Even though it is in the Stone Bear series, I read it as the author suggested in the middle of the Jade series. It flows perfectly within the middle of the Jade series
I like this book was a little disappointed in the ending now I'm going to have to try to find the rest of these books in the series. But I did like it.
"Stone Bear: Sentinel" by Amelia Jade is EXCEPTIONAL. Amelia has done an exquisite job with this new series. Amelia has kept the high standards she had set for "Jade Crew." The "Stone Bear" Story-line is phenomenal. Not only do I love where she takes it, but how she takes it there. Her plot is genius. The characters continue on as they had in "Jade Crew" but with some new attitude. Caia Rowan is about a strong, bold, calm woman who reads the body language of others she can also be brash and snarky. She is also the new Executive Assistant for the Kedyn Brothers. Gabriel is a Stone Bear one of the Elite Forces of the Kedyn Brothers. The Stone Bears went to pick up a dragon stone from the Diamond crew. When Gabriel entered the cave he felt something off and out of the corner of his eye he saw a glint. Just in the time it took him to twist slightly, when a pickaxe swung at Gabriel and took a chunk out of his forehead. Gabriel remained in his human form and in control and took the bear out, while his two team mates took care of the others. Gabriel came after Michael to find out why he was met with a pickaxe to the head. Michael had no clue. Only that the guy was three weeks new and Michael had sent in several reports that he was a trouble maker. Something has gone amiss in Genesis Valley and it's bad. Gabriel and Caia had been paired up as the startup of the Sentinel Program. Gabriel was now officially the Sentinel of the Genesis Valley. They were to investigate what's going on and to locate the Opal crew who had taken off and were in hiding. The only thing they can confirm is that the Kedyn Brothers and Ferro the dragon owner of the Tongue and Flame cannot, will not or are unable to help them for some reason. When Gabriel picked Caia up for their "Business" Dinner Date she was horrified but the gash in His head. After dinner and a lot of flirting, which had been going on since they met, Gabriel took Caia home. She didn't ask him to come in it surprised them both. She was unsure. So Gabriel headed home. A bit down the road he received a call from Caia. She told him to come back and the door was unlocked. Gabriel was so surprised that he didn't even follow the road speeds and was there immediately. When he arrived the door indeed was unlocked. He stepped in took of his boots and jacket, then picked Caia up and carried her to bed. Where they went 3 rounds of hot and passionate. He didn't make it home that night. A day or two later Caia remembered the Sapphires had a piece of land somewhere so they could let the bears run and swim. She searched it out, found it and did not mention it to Gabriel. He would want to go with her but bears were forbidden to go onto other clans' territory. It was a death sentence if caught. Caia couldn't have that. So Caia went alone she hid in the tree lines along the property but she had to get close enough to see what they had there and what was going on. Caia found six new bungalows. She figured that's where the Opal crew had been hiding out. She also saw Kent the Alpha of the Opals. But she didn't see a building big enough to manufacture drugs as was their though about what was going on. As she got closer to hear the two bears were arguing but she couldn't distinguish what they were saying, then one of the other bears came up from behind her and grabbed her. They chained her up by her hands and feet and took her to a large building that she hadn't seen. Gabriel was pacing back and forth. Caia hadn't called him at the time she specified and he couldn't reach her. He had no idea where she was or what was happening. This is an amazing story that I really loved. I was given a copy for an honest review.
Stone Bear: Sentinel is an interesting concept. It takes the role of “enforcer” within a community, a business to a different level. This is an edgier world. The shifters who find their way to Genesis Valley are on their last chance, if they cannot function here then they are ended. For whatever reason they cannot make it out in the world, they can make it in this mining community… if they can fit in and be productive. If not, then there is no where left to go but to their death. Gabriel as a Stone Bear is an elite enforcer along with his team. They are responsible for the pickup of the Dragon Stones found in the mines – and for other duties as well, those not so very pleasant.
Since this is the beginning of another offshoot of the Ridgeback Bears series, it may help to have read that series… but there is enough mentions within the dialog to keep you informed as to who people are and their story. I’ve read two of the Jade Crew stories, and decided to approach this larger series from another angle of the Stone Bears. Why? Because I’m looking for a connection to these characters and their story – I want to enjoy these series and care about the people living in these stories. I cannot put my finger on why I cannot connect or care about these characters. I don’t know what it is and I think that is what keeps bringing me back, I want to decide one way or the other but I’m caught in that middle ground of… it’s a good story. And I think I have to leave it at that. A good story, gritty and dark but one that while I enjoy aspects of it, I’m not connecting enough to call it a favorite. I will be picking up the next story in the Stone Bears series, since I do want to know what happens next. So, yes in a way it has me hooked but I cannot tell you why. I really prefer to be able to say yay or nay on a series and move on.. but I’ll keep trying until I get an answer that I can live with – which means more reading for me. Not a totally bad thing. *grin*
I received this for a honest review. Amelia Jade done an amazing job with this book. I had already been reading the series on the Jade Crew. Don’t worry this book will work fine as a standalone. It is good to see a book come out on Gabriel. We got introduced to him in the series of the Jade crew and loved him in that series.
Gabriel is a handsome shifter bear. He has sad past and a hard life. He also shoulders a lot of responsibility and is getting ready to shoulder a lot more. Gabriel finds himself attracted to the new executive assistant to the Kedyns. Even though he knows it is a bad idea and against the rules he can’t help the attraction and the desires he feels for her.
I loved Caia. I can see what the Kedyns saw in her. She was this strong plus size human woman that could handle herself well. She could enter a situation and show no fear. The question is can she use her head and make sure she does not end up in trouble?
After reading about Caia I found her the perfect mate for Gabriel. She has all the qualities he needs in a mate. She thinks quick on her feet, is smart, brave, and can read between the lines in a situation. There is such a strong pull between the two that neither of the two can fight it for long.
Gabriel finds he has taken a new possession and put in the Sentinel program which causes him to be working close to Caia. There is something strange going on in Genesis Valley and Caia and Gabriel need to get to the bottom of what is going on.
Caia finds herself in danger. There appears to be no hope in sight. Will Gabriel figure out what has happen to Caia and get to her before it is too late?
A very enjoyable read apart from typical heroine stupidity. I came into this world in a later book than this one and I am starting from the beginning to catch up. I am enjoying the journey very much. Though I know what is coming it is still a pleasure to get more understanding and build up of the background story. I was impressed once again by this authors world building and how she ties in these separate series to flow and intertwine with each other. I really liked Caia and found her to be strong in a subtle way, interesting due to being a trained negotiator by trade, capable and level headed character, until she broke her word to Gabriel about staying safe. In this book, Caia, who by not telling Gabriel her thoughts on where the Sapphire Crew were and by going on her own to investigate, was the cause of Uriel’s severe and life altering injuries. She doesn’t take responsibility for her actions and really needs to take responsibility for these actions and consequences in future books. Pitting a human against a shifter is not a good bet for the human and how she thought she could sneak around is just so ridiculous as to be laughably demented. I hate this happening in a good book. Apart from this I thoroughly enjoyed the read and cannot wait to get into Uriels story Phoenix. I have found lately that some authors think that a good gripping way to bring a scene of tension or angst into a story is to make an intelligent woman suddenly become too stupid to live. WHY? Too many authors are doing this recently and I tend to return and refund the book.

Kindle Unlimited standalone book in a series within a series. Loved the story and hotness! They are assigned to work together. They have to hide a secret.....
Stone Bear: Sentinel (Stone Bears Book 1) by Amelia Jade
Gabriel is a Stone Bear. One of the elite. Tasked with securing and moving the dragon stones when one of the mining crews find them. Now he is being tasked with another important job......finding out what is causing the crews to fight and causing so much death. Death isn't unusual in Genesis Valley, as this is the last chance for the shifters that come here. But this is something different. Then to complicate matters even more.....there is Caia. The new executive assistant for Marcus. Gabriel can't stop thinking about her or wanting to be near her. That is a no no for him and her.
Caia likes her job. Even though it took a bit to figure out exactly what her job was. Being tasked to work with Gabriel, a Stone Bear, and one hunk of a bear, is okay with her. She would love to spend more time with him. Just discreetly so they don't both get fired.....or worse. Finding who or what is causing all the problems in Genesis Valley won't be an easy task, but she is working with Gabriel, so what could go wrong?
Mixed feelings on this one. I was happy that it wasn't a short read (like another bear series I had attempted) and I thought the setting and characters were well thought out. I enjoyed them, but at the same time, i felt that near the end, they and a few parts of the stories were just rushed and that the writing got a little choppy because of it.
One thing I noticed in this and the other bear series (as well as another bbw type series I came across and all by three different authors) is how these women's panties keep getting portrayed as soaked - and often throughout the book. Like, really? It's happening so often I'd wonder why they aren't walking around in depends. It's just irritating and detracts from the story when you mention it 3-5x.
Aside from that newly developed pet peeve...the story concept and characters were good but because of how some things were written (scenes that either dragged or were rushed though) - it makes this just an okay read.
Not sure if I'll continue with the series but if I do, I hope it continues to have interesting plots and characters, but improves on the writing.
Stone Bear: Sentinel Stone deserves 4.5 stars and a WOW.
Gabriel, Stone Bear shifter from Genesis Valley has his own story to be told. Caia pushes him to the limits. Will they be able to stay business professionals or develop into something more with heat? Will they be able to resist their mutual attraction?
The heroine of this tale is a human female called Caia Rowan. Don't underestimate her! She's a lot tougher and smarter than she looks. Read to find out what her role is in this story.
Beware! Danger and intrigue are happening in Genesis Valley. Who is the master mind? Who's causing problems among the shifters? Will they be able to stop things before it's too late?
