The Hermetica 101: A modern, practical guide, plain and simple

Rate this book
THE ANKH IS THE EGYPTIAN SYMBOL OF ETERNAL LIFE More specifically, the ankh symbol looks like and represents a "key"- a key to unlocking the door to eternal life. How do you get this key? Through knowledge- a very specific knowledge that was a closely and jealously guarded secret. Mirrors were often made in the shape of the ankh key in order to remind the user of the existence of a perception of life that extended into another world, into another reality. The teachings within this book are aimed at expressing, in modern and plain terms, the ancient Egyptian knowledge that was believed to be this key- the key to unlocking the door to eternal life, and for bestowing upon the user the perception of life beyond this World. From the book: "Just as we were developed for this world in the womb, so too are we being developed for the next world within these bodies. "Just as we emerged from the world of our mother's womb into this world, so too will we emerge from the world of these bodies into the next..."

Like the author, I've read almost every translation of the Hermetica that has been available to me. His preferences are the The Hermetica: The Lost Wisdom of the Pharaohs by Tim Freke and The Way of Hermes: New Translations of The Corpus Hermeticum and The Definitions of Hermes Trismegistus to Asclepius by Clement Salaman, Dorine van Oyen, William D. Wharton. While those are good versions and I've read those as well, my personal favorites are Hermetica: The Greek Corpus Hermeticum and the Latin Asclepius in a New English Translation, with Notes and Introduction by Brian P. Copenhaver and THRICE-GREATEST HERMES VOLUME I-III (Studies in Hellenistic Theosophy and Gnosis) by G.R.S. Mead.

The author stated both in the beginning and at the end that his intent was not to give a literal or scholarly translation but to give a modern day rendering that makes more sense to people of this age as things that may have made sense in the time of Thoth may not be relevent today. He did a good enough job in doing so for persons who may come across this for the first time, but for me it was lacking a bit. Call it the nerd in me, but the scholarly renditions just have more "meat on the bone". I would still recommend this for those who prefer the simple wording and aren't as invested in the study of ancient scriptures as I.

Very good book

I give 5 stars because this book helped me to have a better understanding of God. The way it was written is easy to understand but at the same time very deep. I would recommend to anyone that is in search of growing spiritualy.

Transforms your perception and outlook on life, it’s meaning, our approach to it. What we value, how and why. Gifting those with eyes to see and those with ears to hear.

Certainly one for those who are exploring alchemy.

That’s all I want!

My one and only burning desire. Time does not exist, and I never give up. Nothing really matters, all three of these words are of equal importance.

The book is based on ancient Egyptian writing. The basis seems to be that each person is to find their own truth. This involves experience vs. dogma and says that exploring is a spiritual path.

An interesting point is that 'By studying the works of the Creator, you come to a feeeling of kingship with that Creator.' That's a very meaningful statement.

The book says that God is an intelligence that is unfathomable by humans which also makes a lot of sense. Something that could create what has been created would have to have an intelligence so far above humans that we can't even understand just how much that means.

The book also discusses Gnostic Christians, alchemy, the Emerald tablet and the various paths open to us including service to others and wisdom, among others.

The book also has some references.

The book gives a person a good bit to think about.
