I don’t write many reviews, so I want to be up front about that I generally don’t write a review when I love a book. I feel the four or five stars speak for themselves. But when I rate this low, I feel I owe the author and potential readers an explanation. Here it is.
Mr. Zerf has a good imagination and that’s a great thing. There are a lot of good things about the story. I warred with myself the entire time after the first book, because I always feel I owe a book a good attempt to read it before I review it. I made it to around page 400 of 1000.
I will say part of it is that I feel the military portrayal is just a bit off the mark, as is the depth of characters. The story is a fast read and I did like the main characters and the story itself, and yet...I can’t get past the actual writing itself. If ever a book needed an editor, this one does. I would say it’s like he wrote it fast and didn’t go back to clean it up—but it’s worse than that. Far worse. The grammar is so bad at times that it disrupts the story. I think it’s the worst I’ve seen.
I literally just need a break from this writing, which is sad, because I want to finish the story. I want to know what happens, but I find myself avoiding opening the book. So here I am, 400 pages invested and I can say I liked the story but I hate the writing enough that, for now at least, this one is a DNF.
Update: I had waited a year from the start of reading this book to actually hitting send on my review. It’s now been 4.5 years, and I have picked up the book a few times here and there. But every time, I think the same thing: if a writer cannot take his work seriously enough to pay an editor, can care so little for his reader as to not do what’s needed to give the reader a decently edited book, why should I care enough to read that book? I find myself annoyed each time with how poorly edited this is. And I put it aside yet again. This time I give permanently.
Am I gloriously happy at finding and purchasing this box set. All six books delivered fabulously. All the elements were there. Adventure, excitement, laughter and tears. And that was just me. A brilliant story and well worth reading and recommended. However, I have one issue with the character, or maybe the storyline. What about a female counterpart. Someone for Nathaniel to love for a while and share his world and adventures. This need not be a disadvantage or denigrate his character, but perhaps enhance his life. After all isn't the hero allowed some comforts too. Really can't wait for the next stages, the new adventures in the forthcoming books. This is a series worth carrying on. Don't keep us waiting too long Craig.
Read Book 1 separately. Totally different from my usual genre. Finished 2-6. Loved it. I like how Nate although stays the same also changes with time and people. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I......if that is possible.
Favorite quotes: 1. ‘Everyone has a choice,’ said Nathaniel. ‘Everyone. Don’t ever forget that, Brett. It is the one thing that no one can ever take from us. They may not be easy choices, and they may be hard, but they are always ours. Always.’ 2. A small streak of white flour on her face. Domesticated war paint.
*************** Kindle Unlimited - Thank You! *************** I came across this while looking at other stuff; saw the ratings and read some reviews. The post apocalyptic genres don't usually hold my interest, but I figured I'd take a peek and return the book after checking out a chapter or two. Didn't happen. The author held my interest through the very last page of the last book in the series. That's got to rate 5 stars and a well earned review.
Welcome to the saga of the ultimate marine...strong, fast, sure and deadly, but a heart of gold and the will to do the right thing. Stuck in a world he never asked for, Nathaniel becomes a beacon of hope across time and space... Saving the world one group of survivors at a time. This is a series that is hard to put down... Scary, funny, Dad and hopeful all at the same time! Reserve some time and pick it up, you will not be disappointed!
Apocalypse, Fantasy, Aliens, Spliced Humans and a great story.
Thank you Craig Zerf, I loved the Forever Man series! The characters were full bodied, the story well developed, very imaginative and I wanted to believe it. I love post apocalypse stories, I love fantasy, and Aliens..Why not put them together? You’ve combined them with finesse, I’ve never found one like this, a good fit for me. I look forward to more books in this series.... I think I’ll read another series you’ve written, You’ve got a great imagination.
This series is one of the better I have read, comparable to the Wilds by Donna Augustine, but longer, more intricate and totally absorbing. Nathanial was a Marine assigned to the American Embassy when the earth suffers a transition of such immense change, that few are able to cope. A wave of change that stops any machinery or electronics from working. And so begins a journey that tests Nathanials mettle, changing him into a leader that is above the norm. He erratically travels through time, meeting challenges and growing in strength and ability. Superior story.
Easy and well written read, one to keep you glued to the pages.
After reading the first one decided to try the series. Books follow well from each other with new characters (and villans) introduced as required. I liked the mix of sci-fi and fantasy, especially as I'm not so keen on pure fantasy. Author has an easy but addictive style which makes me think I'll read more of his books. Well worth a try and see if you're hooked!
I really enjoyed this series...at least the first five books. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the 6th one, I did. However, I really felt that book 6 could have been the beginning to a whole new series. It felt disconnected from the first 5 as well as quite rushed. So much happened so fast in book 6. I feel it could have been been spread out in another couple of books at least.
US Marine becomes a Nomad of the Time Streams, reminiscent of Moorcock's Oswald Bastable, but with added aliens and mind-reading. Good story, exciting, moderately well-written. However, the author needs serious editorial support: the books are full of misspellings, incorrectly-used words, grammatical errors, missing and misplaced words and similar mistakes; all of which jars and tends to reduce the reader's enjoyment.
Well written. The characters are diverse but work well together. The action is virtually nonstop. The descriptions are well thought out and understandable. The violence is just got enough to create an image, yet not too gory. I read all six books in 2 1/2 days. It would have been shorter but I did have to sleep some.
Very different than the cookie cutter end of the world stories ( I read the 6 books together) I loved, laughed, cried got angry just a few times during my reading I also detested the “bad” guys sadly there will probably always be people who make money off the suffering of their fellow man maybe in a few lifetimes we as humans will get it right
Ok. I know that is not a real word, but how I felt as I finished these books. Unique and engaging. I ate them up like chocolate! Well written with only a few typos I highly recommend it to anyone.
Was looking for a change of pace. Spotted this 6 volume set, and having read a few of the authorities titled decided to go for it. 12 hours later, all 6 read and wishing there was more. Good nay, Great stuff. Heartily recommended!
Another wonderful all consuming series! I could read about the Forever man.. well FOREVER! Thank you Craig for going against what others told you could not be done. It is wonderful and magical.
I absolutely loved The Forever Man. Thank you so much. Made me cry because of the emotion you put into your stories. Are you likely to continue Nathaniel story and if so when ? Thank you again Craig for wonderful series. Kind regards. Jeanne
I really enjoyed the story of the FOREVERMAN and his adventures. If the writing didn’t have a slew of typos, missing words, and other errors, I likely would have given the series 5 stars.
This book is probably better classified as fantasy which is not my cup of tea but i read it anyway. Story had some interesting parts but overall i it just wasn't that appealing to me.
