Warriors, heroes, demons, pirates, wizards, faeries, dragons, and a magic sword come together in a unique coming of age adventure.
When his father is killed by pirates, Bray is raised by the Tawshe--who everyone believes are murderous savages. His position as the Crown Prince of Nadia is denied him because the Tawshe have a secret they kill to keep. His family believe he is dead, and most of the Tawshe believe he should have been killed instead of adopted and trained as one of their own, but Bray's life has purpose; retrieve his father's swords and return to Nadia. A mad wizard's attempt to harness a demon gives him a chance to fulfill his dreams, if he can survive.
Dave Skinner lives in Haliburton County, Ontario with his artist wife, in a house they built themselves, after he retired, at 60, from a career in I.T. He is currently working on his fourth fantasy novel.
A book that I thought would have a simple premise turned out to include a high-concept side story about dimension hopping. The story was in danger of having too many things going on since the narrative darts all over the place, but there was a good balance to it. What I didn't like was some examples of amateurish narrative flow, such as sticking in a simple sentence like "It was good soup." The ending, though striving to be full of action, ended up being too basic and underwhelming, and I find myself having little sympathy for a culture who kills outsiders to keep a simple and self-serving secret--unlike the main protagonist.
Very enjoyable reading with diverse characters. Warriors, scaled creatures. Pirates, all coming together to make a good story. Thanks to Mister for a good tale. Can't wait for the next book.
