Take Ben Harrison . . . One easy-going, drop-dead gorgeous, Hollywood screenwriter—who might be just the teensiest bit alpha in the bedroom. (Okay, a bit more than teensy because there’s nothing teensy about him.)Mix with Ali McKenna . . .One sweet, slightly geeky, very vanilla, chemistry teacher with a “head made for science and a bod made for sin”—who might be just a little too curious for her own good.Toss in two secret crushes, a friendship that goes back to when they were kids, a wedding weekend, a problem ex-boyfriend, and one very protective (and meddling) older brother. It’s a recipe for trouble . . . with enough sparks to make your e-reader smolder. And so much fun it oughta be a movie. What’s a Sugar-&-Spice romantic comedy?A standalone novella or short novel with sweetness and laughs and love and heat—lots of heat. And always a Happy Ever After.

This is the first book I've read by Susan Hammond and I have to say,she completely captured my attention with her writing. The story of Ali and Ben is one that is easier for the reader to connect to because of its realistic situation happening to someone in real life. Its the weekend of Ali's brothers wedding to her best friend....On valentines day of all days. With no date by her side, her Ex boyfriend of two years showing up with his new fiancé on hand, and Ben,the man she has always been in love with since she was little, and can't have, standing across the alter from her.......self pity drowned her. She couldn't wait for the weekend to be over. Ben,her brothers best friend growing up,a screen writer living in LA,a man with a sexual appetite that would dominate her, couldn't take his eyes off of Ali..... She has always been off limits in the past, making him hide the strong feelings he felt for her. Not anymore! What starts as innocent banter between the two of them grows into a whole lot of something! But that something is quickly put to a test when Ali's brother Josh tries to put a stop to it. He loves his little sister and doesn't want to see her hurt again especially by his best friend. Ben tried backing away, hurting Ali in the process. He tried to do right by his best friend, leaving behind the woman that meant the world to him. Suffocation was overtaking him,he knew he had to make a decision wether to let her go or fight for her. This story was such a beautiful one to read, and the ending was even more beautiful.
A Texas-based (set in Houston, my stomping grounds) novel without a single dumbass Texas stereotype to be found? Be still, my heart.
Plus, it's a friend's-to-lovers romance. That happens to be by absolute fave.
I loved, loved, loved Ali; a funny, sassy girl with nerdy tendencies is my absolute weakness. She posses both vulnerability and an inner strength that was endearing. And to top it off, she is a teacher. I would love to have a friend like her.
Ben... personality wise? I liked him. His banter with Ali was fun to read. The thing that ruined him for me was that he was a Dom. I hate that effing trope. I wish it had been made clearer in the blurb, but if it had, I wouldn't have read it.
Now, in the book's defense, all that stuff was subdued. It read like light kink. Since Ali wasn't familiar with the lifestyle, the one and only love scene was not terrible. However, Ben did mention a few times about how she was a terrible submissive and how his usual sex partners would talk about contracts and rules. Major effing eye roll. There is not a submissive bone in my body (not judging those who are), so, to me, reading about the "lifestyle" is a major turn off. I don't mind a little kink, but talk of sex like a business transaction is so icky.
I'm so glad this book only skirted the topic, but I do wonder if that would change if we had a glimpse into their future. The thought makes me cringe.
Tirade aside, the rest of the book was cute, and parts were swoon-worthy.
Ali is a beautiful science teacher.. And she's in the middle of a nightmare, she's single, on Valentine's day, in a poofy dress and is the maid of honour, at her brother's wedding to her best friend and did I I mention she's single?. And in walks Ben, the hot Hollywood screenwriter.. Her sexy friend that she hasn't seen in a while. Who's also her brother's best friend.. They also happen to be in love with each other, only neither one knows, they both think they're not good enough for the other one.. One night could change all that.. I loved their story and their chemistry is HOT! Their journey made me laugh, cry, shout in frustration and made me short of breath. Congratulations to Susan Hammond for another amazing story...
4.5+ stars!! Very sweet and hot! Quick read but definitely read it! I enjoyed it a lot! Would love to read more! The author mentioned a wedding? Hopefully soon!
This came up on Team Romance Reads, and I liked the blurb enough to click on it. When I saw the book was available on the Kindle Unlimited program, I immediately borrowed it. That was about 3 hours ago. Apart from laundry breaks, I read Oughta Be a Movie in one sitting.
Ali and Ben are old friends. Ali's brother, who is Ben's best friend, is getting married, which brings him back to Texas from his Hollywood home. Ali is a high school chemistry teacher who spouts obscure science facts when she is nervous. She's had a crush on Ben forever, but thinks he is out of her league. Ben has feelings for Ali, too, but isn't sure how to act on them.
I loved these characters. Smart and sexy and delicious and did I mention sexy? Although Ben has outgrown his awkward teenage geek phase, he still kind of thinks the nerd lingers. Ali is insecure about her ability to keep a man interested,(Hello, weird science facts) and about her looks. Their friendship was drawn so well. Inside jokes, and old traditions litter their conversations, drawing the reader into their backstory. It makes their connection believable.
Bottom line - One of the most charming, sweetly sexy books I have read in a while. Ms. Hammond's story flow was just terrific, and the words and phrases she used captured the mood of the story, allowing the reader to get a good grip on the mood of the character and the story. (I don't usually comment on word choices, but seriously...stellar ability to set the scene.) Bottom line - prepare to be charmed and delighted.
***ARC received from author for an honest review***
Oughta Be a Movie is a quick, sexy, friends-to-lovers story. I absolutely loved Susan Hammond's debut novel, Unfinished, so I expected to love this one just as much. It was enjoyable and definitely steamy but I felt like something was missing. It is mentioned many times throughout the book about Ben's sexual preferences and tastes and how he doesn't think that Ali would be into it. Unfortunately, it's never brought up between the characters so that part of the story felt incomplete and disconnected. There was definitely lots of chemistry between Ben and Ali and the premise of the story was one that I love (friends-to-lovers, older brother's best friend/younger sister) so I did enjoy the story. I was just hoping for more all around. The author definitely writes second-chance romance and friends-to-lovers tropes exceptionally well so despite feeling like something was missing, I'd still definitely recommend reading this book.
**** ARC GIFTED IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW****
Absolutely FANTABULOUS! Ali is the sweetest in the world and her brother's best friend is the hottest thing since the period table was created. He's your typical alpha male with a secret kink for dominance in the bedroom. However, he's been secretly in love with the sweet, kind, vanilla Ali. She has been in love with Ben. Can they get past the "friend zone" and enter the "love" zone? In the process there is her ex, her brother, and his ex, and her brothers wife which is her best friend.
Susan Hammond had written a stellar book with all the passion and love everyone craves. You won't be sorry after reading!
Ben and Ali, childhood friends. Ben Is Ali's brother, Josh, best friend. Ali has had a crush on Ben since forever! Ben always thought she was cute but she was Josh's younger sister and he is not going there! Lives intertwine during school, college and life. Josh is getting married to Bree, who by the way Ali's best friend! Guess who is the Best Man, Ben! And who is the Maid of Honor? You guessed it! As Ben and Ali rekindle their friendship, embers are burning for something more! I found this story very funny, sad and heartwarming. Kudos Susan for another terrific story! I was provided a pre-publication copy by the publisher for review purposes.
Okay, honestly, I'm not very good in writing reviews. I usually ramble on about how much I liked it or how much I didn't; but I'm going to try to not do that. So this sugar-&-spice romantic comedy is great short read (well it's unfinished), with fun-witty sexy characters. I had a lot of fun reading it, I laughed, I got giddy when Ben talked dirty, I felt like punchin gsomething, I got the usual feels in a romantic comedy book. It's a fun sexy read. I recommend it.
What a beautiful story!. I absolutely adored this book!. It's very well done and the characters had me hooked on page one. Ali it's sweet yet brainy, Ben is her longtime friend. They secretly had a crush on each other for a long time. Ali has an ex issue that Ben helps her with and it opens the door to thier feelings. Sexy and hot yet sweet and beautiful. I'm so impressed. I definitely recommend this book!
I was given this e-book by the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. My conclusions are my own. I was not compensated in any way.
Loved it! So sweet, cute, funny and sexy! (just a hint of steam) Quick read. Couldn't put it down.
*Spoiler Alert* Lifelong friends , (secretly in love with the other), turned lovers; Finally!! And then of course, the butt-in-ski brother, misunderstanding and miscommunication. With a beautiful HE A! FOR THE AUTHOR: Wish there was an epilogue, describing some of their life together after that weekend... working up to and including their wedding, with a few more of those sexy, naughty scenes... just a thought.
Funny and sexy, what a great combo. When Ali and Ben finally act on years of repressed feelings and get together you get a wonderful little story that really oughta be a movie. Susan Hammond does a great job of weaving back story into the weekend glimpse in Ali and Ben's lives. Though a novella Oughta Be a Movie packs a lot of heart, drama and emotion. I was given an arc in exchange for a honest review.
I enjoyed reading this book a lot! The story is sweet and spicy as promissed. My only issue is the predictable conflict caused by miscommunication, which happens to be the sole reason for every conflict in romance books. Maybe it just got old for me cause I'm sure a lot of people still dig those. Anyway, I'd still recommend this book to anyone who wants to meet fun characters in a light, yet hot, great story!
I was given an ARC for an honest review. This was a very cute story. I enjoyed Ali and Ben. Their feelings for each other seemed to be clear to everyone but to each other. They'd been in love since they we children but many different factors left them unable to express it. I enjoyed seeing them realize that the only way for them to be truly happy was to be together.
Received this book in exchange for an honest review... Loved it. There were enough, humor, drama. steam and the works to keep you turning the pages. This is my first book of Susan Hammond I read and surely not the last one. Well done Susan on dong a great job.
