Rate this book
This is the first volume of a monumental, inspired and thoroughly engrossing multi-volume history of the Catholic Church by the distinguished French scholar, Henri Daniel-Rops. Complete in itself, this two-volume Image Books edition opens with an illuminating account of the origins of the Church to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, provides a magnificent study of St. Paul and describes the relations between the infant Church and the imperial Roman government including the persecutions under Nero, Domitian and the Antonines, presents a fascinating picture of Christian line and worship in the Catacombs. Included is a survey of early Christian literature and the crucial period of the third century, ending with the victory of the Cross under Constantine.
The intellectual problems of the fourth century which gave rise to the first major heresies and the steps taken to define Catholic dogmas are fully explored. The author vividly re-creates the administrative, cultural and spiritual features of the Church in the closing years of that century when Theodosius the Great established Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire. This is truly 'a vivid account of the most stirring period of the Church's history.'

Henri Daniel-Rops is an author you may have missed. He wrote histories of Jesus, the Old Testament, the Bible, and the Catholic Church between 1933 and his death. I really love the way he puts faith and history in context with one another. He has a way of connecting the dots and comparing those times to modern life (or back when he was writing) which is inspirational and sticks with you.

I worked my way a few pages a per day through The Church of Apostles and Martyrs which was the first in his 10-volume history of the Church. I have seen this historical series described as both inspired and engrossing. I agree. I always come away with a new insight.

Daniel-Rops was French but the translations really sing. Fun fact, some of his books were translated by Patrick O'Brian who went on to write the long-running Master and Commander series.

After two failed attempts, finally conquered this one. So rich in details for a story that happened 2k years ago.. Also, very inspiring, and explanatory in regards to how things came to be the way they are today.
