He taught her to trust. He taught her to love. And then he left her behind without a word. Tonight he's back. Whether for a moment or forever depends on the turn of a card. Twenty-one to win—or to lose it all. Their future hinges on her dealing him the right card...
Erica Ridley is a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of historical romance novels, including THE DUKE HEIST, featuring the Wild Wynchesters. Why seduce a duke the normal way, when you can accidentally kidnap one in an elaborately planned heist?
In the 12 Dukes of Christmas series, enjoy witty, heartwarming Regency romps nestled in a picturesque snow-covered village. After all, nothing heats up a winter night quite like finding oneself in the arms of a duke!
Two popular series, the Dukes of War and Rogues to Riches, feature roguish peers and dashing war heroes who find love amongst the splendor and madness of Regency England.
When not reading or writing romances, Erica can be found eating couscous in Morocco, zip-lining through rainforests in Costa Rica, or getting hopelessly lost in the middle of Budapest.
Erica Ridley is one of those authors whose novellas I pick up when I'm looking for a charming read, something that's just fun, and sweet, and without an overabundance of drama-lamas stampeding all over the place.
The problem (and the reason I almost rounded down to 2 stars) is that this isn't a novella. It's at best a short story. It wouldn't work at all if the couple's past affection hadn't been reasonably well drawn (the reason I rounded up instead of down, in the end).
I mean, this is perfectly fine, it's just incredibly slight. And with an ending that is entirely predictable to anyone who's read a romance novel before, or has even a passing familiarity with Mariah Carey's Christmas hits (minus any in-text references to Christmas...).
I really liked this book! It was an adorable read, and the characters felt real and authentic. The story followed a good pace and didn't drag or seem rushed. However, I felt as though the ending was a bit abrupt. Of course, it's a short story, but I would have liked an additional chapter as a wrap-up!
Lady Matilda Kingsley is an orphan under the care of her Cousin Egbert. Against her will she is drawn into a gamble on behalf of her uncle against Major Owen Turner, her childhood friend and the man she was in love with before he abruptly went off to war four years earlier.
I enjoyed this but it was very short. Also, for some reason I was hoping for a rehash of the cheesy film A Hazard of Hearts, based on a Barbara Cartland novel, in which a father loses his daughter in a game of chance to the evil Lord Wrotham ...
Both this eighth title in the Dukes of War Series which is a 50 page novelette and also the first title in the series The Viscount's Christmas Temptation which is a 150 page long novella are both clean and permafree gifts from the author to her fans. Whether the rest of the series is clean I don't know? I was looking for a quick romantic swoony read between recieving ARC's for review and this fit the bill.
The couple already have a prior long time close friendship and strong solid romantic attachment from childhood to late adolescence that the author completely, but quickly summarizes which allows this to be a novelette and still feel like a complete story. Regency Era societal cultural forces and the Peninsular War with Napoleon have separated them from being able to be together as a couple with the hero abandoning the heroine 4 years ago to join the military. They reunite in their beginning 20's while the hero is on military leave, changed people with the same forces seemly keeping them apart.
The second to last scene and ending scene will thrill aficionados of books and romance!
Language: No profanity. Clean.
Drugs and alcohol: Drinking and intoxication by other background characters during gambling.
Sensuality Content: Clean. Kisses and close embracing only. No sex on or off the page. Both the hero and heroine have some implied sexual innuendo feelings toward each other with no details given or acted upon. The strong implied sexual innuendo would make this PG 13 for me even though it is clean.

What a delightful second chance at love story set during the Napoleonic Wars. And, when I checked the major sites this short story was free on all sites so a gift to the reader with the addition of the first chapter of a new series soon out by the author.
Major Owen Turner and Lady Matilda Kingsley were friends from a very young age. With him back in town after four years away there is a game of chance that might change both of their lives and it all depends on the cards.
I have to say that this was a sweet, fun, story that made me smile and left me happy. It was a gift from the author and as such was a very nice one, indeed.
The story itself only goes to 58%. The rest of the file is ads (lots of repetitive ads) and a chapter of a full length title from a different series by Ms. Ridley, that seems to be about a gambling addict.
The actual story here, All I Want is a sweet piece that's almost closer to a vignette than a story. The thing I found a bit odd about it is that while much of it was in his POV, the important part, when he decides to actually communicate with the girl, is from hers, so we don't get his thinking/reasoning/emotions when he makes the decision to do so.

"All I Want" by Erica Ridley was written with an excellent story-line! The complex story-line with the interesting plot-line made for the most marvelous story of a girl way before her time. This story is about a spunky, young woman who always wanted to get what she wants, and what she wants is to find a man that might just be under her nose! Only time will tell.
Lady Matilda Kingsley loves Major Owen Turner who disappeared four years ago but is BACK and gambling with her guardian, cousin Egbert. She wins! He pouts! They reconcile!
1. SO SHORT.
2. Still, sweet albeit simple. Owen goes from distantly hurting to leering lech in a matter of a page which is RIDICULOUS, but their mutual affection was decently sketched.
3. 2 stars if only because it was, again, SO SHORT.
Though this was entirely too short, it was very sweet. I don't feel it is at all connected with the Dukes of War series other than I'm sure the author wanted to connect it to an established series so that it was sure to be enjoyed. I loved it, but, again, I wish there was so much more!
SUCH a great set-up!!! Plain, spinster heroine confronted by the hero, who abandoned her after she confessed her love. She thinks he didn't care for her, but his real reason for disappearing is . Waaay too short a format to resolve this in a satisfying way, the characters' changes felt abrupt and then, the end. A lot of potential that was cut short by the very brief format of the story. (3.5 stars)
On re-read, again , AMAZING set-up, but the entire story is resolved in literally three paragraphs. I so wish this was a full length novel! I’m skipping on future re-reads because the resolution is so abrupt
Super short (three chapters) with not enough story, or back story to actually make much sense. He was poor, he wanted to marry her, her cousin sent him packing, told her he was only after her money. He went to war, came back, got jealous, started gambling, lost everything, she went to see him...
We don't know if it ended in a HEA, really. Did they get married despite the difference in their social standings? Did they just bang against the wall? What the hell happened?!
had finished both books I took with me on the bus trip yesterday, so I decided to read this short story (emphasis on short) to knock it off my NOOK. Meh, the story was okay; there were only two scenes in the entire story, but the hero and heroine knew each other and were friends in childhood, so no real insta-love. More like finally admitting they had feelings for each other and making a relationship a go. I've read the first three or four books, and this story doesn't tie in to the main characters so it is pretty much self-contained. It was a freebie from the NOOK store.
All I Want is the eighth book in this series but you won't need to have read all the previous books. This a sweet read. It's actually a very short story that is perfect to read in one sitting.
I enjoyed this story and if you like historical romances, this is an author that I would recommend!
This is a lovely little story of unrequited love, so it is right up my alley. It opens in the gaming parlor at a society ball; Lady Matilda Kingsley has spent the evening ducking unwanted amorous advances, and she's ready to go home. She goes to find her Cousin Egbert, who is her guardian. He's busy gambling, and when he spots her lingering in the door, he waves her over and insists that she play his last hand for him. She has no idea why, until she realizes who he's facing: Major Owen Turner, long-time neighbor and the only boy Matilda ever loved. She was heartbroken when he upped sticks and left abruptly, running off to the continent to join the army in the war.
Matilda is contrived to play the last hand of twenty-one with Owen. He's bet it all - his childhood home is on the line, and they are playing for keeps. The card game was very nicely written; background was carefully woven into the suspense of the game, and just how high the stakes were for Owen. He loses, and realizes he's lost everything, including his last chance with Matilda.
Matilda fears that he's going to leave abruptly again, and she's determined not to let that happen. She follows him to North Yorkshire and ends up on the stoop of her new abode. Owen is upset to see her; he thinks she's come to rub his nose in his loss, and this impression is not helped when Matilda proposes that they play one last hand with blind wagers.
As Owen is showing her around his modest cottage, she realizes that he didn't leave all those years ago for no reason - and the moment she realizes that he does indeed love her is very nicely done. The ending is a little cheesy, but all in all this was a very satisfying read.
You don't need to have any background knowledge of the series to read this story - I'm not sure how tightly knit these characters are to the series proper, but as a standalone story it works. I don't feel like I'm missing anything by skipping to the end, as it were. Unlike The Viscount's Christmas Temptation (Book #1), there *is* a middle here. Rather amazing, considering this story is much shorter than that one. Maybe novella length isn't this writer's forte.
Twenty-year-old Lady Matilda Kingsley and Owen Turner grew up as neighbors, of sorts, near the hamlet of Selby, in North Yorkshire. She was the only daughter of a Marquis and he was born the bastard son of another local lord. He was two years her elder and they soon became best (only) friends and spent many carefree hours exploring the fields and forests surrounding their homes, with the pure innocence, only afforded the very young. This all abruptly changed four years ago when Owen suddenly left, without even saying goodbye. During the last four years, Matilda’s parents died, leaving her as a ward of her cousin, Addington. Her cousin is notoriously known for his love and luck at the card and gambling tables. Matilda is forced into a game with the one and only man she ever loved, the now Major Owen Turner.
This novella is short, even for a novella. It consists of a mere four chapters but excitement, mystery, and intrigue drip from practically every word. This is a romance in the purer sense; set during the Napoleonic Wars, and uncluttered or tarnished with steamy and erotic scenes. There isn’t enough room to accommodate anything except the essentials. I enjoyed my short interlude with these two inspiring characters and wish that our time together was longer. I highly recommend this book to all readers that still believe in the magic of love.
All I Want is a 3-chapter short story about childhood sweethearts Matilda and Owen. Lady Matilda Kingsley, as she is officially known, is the daughter of a marquess, who met Owen Turner, when they were children. But when she was 16, Owen suddenly left to join the army without saying anything to her. Four years later he's back from France. Now a Major, she meets him at an event she's attending with her cousin and guardian, Lord Addington. Owen has wagered his only possession, a cottage in North Yorkshire over a game of twenty-one with Addington. Addington makes Matilda play his hand for him and the lovers find themselves caught in a game against each other.
The strength of this story is Owen's and Matilda's interior monologues, which I think is essential given the story's length. I'm not in favour of short stories because I think there's not enough time to explore the characters, their motivations, settings, and themes. While I liked All I Want, it hasn't changed my mind that story length matters, especially in a romance tale.
P.S.: I like the reference to Roald Dahl's Matilda and her love of books.
All Matilda wants is to go home, but, it seems her Uncle has other ideas. Normally all she has to do is catch his eye from beyond the gaming room, well away from the door to keep from being ruined. However, tonight he is...waiting for her at the door? What is happening? When he not only propels her into the room and sits her on an empty chair, but tells her she is to play the hand for him, she is not only confused, but completely distrustful of his intentions. Then the man, no soldier, she is to play against turns to face her, Owen! The only man she's ever loved! Who left four years before without even saying goodbye! How? Why? She now understood why she was being pressed into this distasteful situation. Neither her Uncle or Owen trusted one another! After all the last time they saw one another Owen had broken her Uncle's nose! But why? Also, why is Owen here now? Only one way to find out, read this short story by Erica Ridley! It will put a smile on your face 😊
Sensual short story about childhood friends who are reunited after several years at a gambling table. Owen is a major in the navy trying to win back the woman he loves. Matilda is an heiress to an estate, avoiding men who only want her 30K dowry. Although this book is a clean romantic story by many standards, there is sensual attraction between the characters and after a passionate kiss the heroine declares that what she feels is love. Truth is that it comes across as lust at least on the heroes part and that seems a bit shallow to me. So, its an okay read. It reminded me a little of Jane Austen's "Persuasion." I would have liked to have seen this story filled out with more character depth, and building romance. But the nature of a short story often leaves the reader wanting more, and I suspect in this author's case she is anticipating the reader to want to explore more of the books in this series.
This was another standalone story in this series, cute but very, very short, ending around 50%. There isn't much to it, as it's a second chance romance, where two people come back together by chance (literally in a game of cards), and the results of it are surprising. Throughout, there are little bits showing the history the two used to have, which was great, and made the end for Lady Matilda and Owen that much better. If you just want a quick, sweet, pick me up historical romance, then this is a great choice. For what it is, it's well-written and enjoyable, but don't expect a lot of plot, just two very important scenes. If you liked previous Erica Ridley books, then you'll like this one as well. I recommend it!
Lady Matilda Kingsley is an orphan under the care of her Cousin Egbert. Against her will she is drawn into a game of blackjack on behalf of her uncle against Major Owen Turner, her childhood friend. She was in love with Owen before he abruptly went off to war four years earlier. They have not met since then, but she has heard talk of exploits; both in the field and the bedroom. *** A quick short story. Matilda never knew why Owen left, and he never bothered to tell her.
This was a short story that I would have liked to see be a little longer, but I’ll take what I can get. Lady Matilda Kingsley is forced by her guardian, her cousin Egbert, to play a hand of cards with Major Owen Turner, the man she was best friends with for two years before he left for the army without a word four years ago. Egbert is hoping she’ll win the only thing Owen has left of value, his small cottage. Now that he’s back, she’s hoping for an explanation and he’s hoping for the same thing he was after before he left - after punching her cousin in the nose. There wasn’t a lot of time to explore either character in depth, but I liked what I did see and was happy with the conclusion.
HOLIDAY REUNION is the eighth book in the Dukes of War series. This one stands completely alone, as it has none of the characters from the series.
This is an extremely short and sweet story that had me singing Mariah Carey’s Christmas anthem as I closed the book.
Lady Matilda Kingsley is a woman with ideas far ahead of her time. I only wish there had been a bit more build up to the completion of her reunion with Major Owen Turner.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: ALL I WANT Series: Dukes of War #8 Category /Genre: Historical Romance, Short story Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Grammar/editing: A – near perfect Received from: Erica Ridley (as an ARC gifted copy)
All I Want, by Erica Ridley, was published in August of 2016. Part of The Dukes Of War series, it's either book 8 or 9, I saw it both ways. At only 47 pages it's more of a teaser than a novella. A small gift from the author for her loyal readers. Lady Matilda Kingsley & Major Owen Turner were childhood friends who fell in love. Owen was turned away when he asked for Matilda's hand, got into a fight with her cousin & took off. 4 years later he's back & they discover each still longs for the other. Ms Ridley gives us 3 chapters with 1 game of 21, high stakes, & a bet on lasting love.
