Joey Roberts and Nichole Hadley were inseparable from the moment they met on the playground. Years later, with graduation looming and their future about to begin, they were positive nothing could tear them apart.
Until one bad decision.
More than a decade following their breakup, Joey returns to town after suffering a devastating injury in Iraq. With a new job on the police force and a new house to fix up, he knows he’ll have no trouble keeping his mind and body occupied.
But when a call brings him face to face with a broken and battered Nichole Hadley-Reynolds, it ignites a flame he'd long thought extinguished.
Joey was certain he’d forgotten Nichole.
Nichole doubted she still held a place in his heart.
Will this be the start of a second chance at lost love? Or will they remain floating adrift, forever in search of...
Solid Ground?

Wow! That was an amazing, emotional, beautiful and heartfelt ride I just went on. I have loved every one of the Wounded Love books and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I love how this Author creates such great characters that always make me feel like I want to crawl in the story and be friends with them! Parts of it were a little difficult to read and took me back to an unhealthy relationship I endured and overcame. I loved Nichole & Joey's story! Highly recommend this one!
Having read Soldier's Heart, I knew I needed to read Joey's Story!
Having returned to his home town, and started a career as a police officer, to be nearer his Dad after a health scare, we find that Joey had his heart broken before he left years ago. He is the epitome of a good person, you cannot help but fall in love with his character.
Nichole is not having the best life, spending far too much time in the ER, she just wants to do what's best for her son, but seems torn over what that is. When your confidence has all been stolen it is hard to make those kinds of decisions, I felt this was a realistic portrayal of those feelings.
You really want this sweet couple to find their HEA, but they have a long road to travel before they can get there, its a dramatic and thrilling ride, with some uncomfortable scenes.
Triggers: Multiple incidents of severe Domestic Abuse
The final novel brings us to Joey's story. Joey hasn't been back to his hometown since he left at 18, also leaving behind his best friend and love of his life Nichole. Joey is now a member of his local police department, an achievement as an amputee, and Nichole is a mother of a 7 year old in an extremely abusive marriage. Needless to say life has not been easy to either one of them since they last saw each other, but neither one can deny they are still drawn to each other. Right away Joey is aware of Nichole's situation but she is not ready to fight her powerful husband and leave, she thinks she is doing what is best for her son, Cade. As the story continues we find out her husband is even more awful than we imagined. We also watch as Nichole slowly finds an inner strength for her son's benefit as well as her own. Joey is this amazing mad who you cannot help but fall even more in love with after we met him in Soldier's Heart. I really enjoyed this story but I will say I found it emotionally draining. It is absolutely fantastically written and the connection between Joey, Nichole and Cade is beautiful...but be prepared for difficult moments to read through as you get through this story. I absolutely recommend this book as well as the others in this series!
This book...man it was hard not to really want Joey and Nichole to get a second chance, both deserved to have a special someone in their lives and happiness. If you met that person in 2nd grade, lost them, but found them again after living through horrible times, you so very much deserve it.
I liked that from the time that Joey saw Nichole again he did what he could to help her. I loved how Joey met Nichole's son and became his friend without knowing who he was. It led to the two of them having a very special relationship and Cade knowing that he could depend on Joey when bad things happened.
With the drama from Nichole's ex I was glad that Joey was there for Nichole and Cade, glad that Joey was able to bring out laughs and good memories, they all needed some good memories to get past things.
As soon as I read the first page I knew this was going to be an intense, heart pounding, emotional story.
Joey and Nichole were best friends, life and time happens to each of them. They meet again when Nichole needs him the most.
This story is told from both POV's and towards the end, a child's POV. Grab your tissues and make sure you have plenty to sit and read because you will not want stop.
The author did an amazing job grabbing you attention and emotion, you feel as if you are there experiencing everything.
I can't even begin to explain how HARD this book was to read, but I dug my heels in and read it anyway, knowing that I trust Megan Green not to break my heart into a thousand pieces without putting it back together again. I only found it so tough because the content at the beginning is so hard to face for so many people, people in my own life. This book is the third in a series (but can be read as a stand alone), and I just adore Megan Green and her beautiful way of telling such a heart wrenching, beautiful, second chance at love, story.
Character development is always a huge thing I look for in a novel, especially when reading books that touch on such hard subjects. I truly enjoyed seeing Nichole grow as a character, and I didn't find it very hard to see why she stayed married to a man who just couldn't appreciate all that she is. I liked all of the evidence included that allowed me to see what kind of man James really is. It was nice to see her learn to be brave, and to realize that she does deserve better than what she's been forcing herself to live with. The little snippets of the past are so hard to read. I also really loved her relationship with Cade, and I'm glad to know that her feelings towards his Daddy didn't hinder how she parented him. I promise, none of this spoils anything, you read this pretty much in chapter one. It's a huge part of building Nichole as a character.
"While mothers are teaching their kids the ABCs and 123s, I've been teaching mine what to do while his father beats the shit out of his mother."
Now Joey, who we'd met in a previous story, is a man's man. And coming home from serving in the military wasn't an easy transition for him. It was nice to see him again since we first met him in Soldier's Heart (book 2 in the Wounded Love series), it's a complete full circle to see this serious side of him, and even the vulnerable side when it comes to seeing Nichole again after so many years.
"There's something special about your parents not just loving each other, but actually liking each other as well. My parents were each other's best friend. There wasn't a single thing they weren't able to get through together. And I wanted a love just like theirs."
Joey and Nichole met back in their early childhood, dated as teenagers and were the best of friends... things took a turn when they couldn't survive Joey's decision to join the military... Now he's back years later, after an injury. Can they find love with each other again?
This book will forever stick with me, it's one of the best ones I've read this year... right up there with the first two in the series which I'd read earlier this year. This book is a second chance romance, one of the best I've ever read. You should truly give it a chance, you won't regret it. I actually liked this one a lot because it had a little less of the military in it - I'm not from that way of living so I can't really relate to it very well. I love Joey and Nicole, and you will too.
A second-chance romance. Joey, another Army veteran, and his ex-girlfriend, Nichole. Joey moves back to his hometown and is a police officer. He stumbles upon Nichole, opening up old wounds and the past. Nichole isn’t in a good situation at home. She’s protecting her son and whatever cost to her. Joey and Nichole know from the past that never really got their chance at happiness. Maybe it’s time for them to shine brightly
I love this series. I really enjoyed this book. I love how even thought Green writes about hard topics they are never forced on us. Joey and Nichole had to overcome not only their shared pasts but also Nichole's present. Wish there was more
Could Joey be any more perfect?!?! I enjoyed every encounter with him in the 2 previous books but LOVED him in his own. He's everything I hoped for. Although Ryan still has my heart from this series Joey is a close 2nd. I hate the torture and torment Nicole went through with her "husband" but it made for such an amazing book. It showed how strong she is through it all. It shows how domestic violence is real and maybe getting away isn't as simple as those around you think. I loved this book as I do all by Megan that I've read. Great ending to another amazing series. Dont read them out of order bc your only missing out of the great setup for all the characters. Gosh I need an extended epilogue to let me feel the encounter of them all together at the end.
I enjoyed this story but not as much as the other two. Joey moving and the prior characters not being as involved made it not as enjoyable. It was still a good read.
All I can say is wow. Wow not only on this book but this whole series. I am in absolute awe with this author. This book was all that you can imagine. The story is heartbreaking at times, I wanted to cry, I wanted to throw my nook and ask why would this happen to these two. The story is so raw and realistic that it hurt to read at points. I loved how it went back and told about their childhood and how everything happened in the beginning. This is not only a second chance story, but you get to see Joey and who he really is. I loved him in the first two books and I know why now. His life wasn't the easiest and coming home was hard. I think when he left Emma in the second book it was hard for him, but he made a life for himself, so going home was the only logical solution for him, but he just didn't know what to expect when he got there.
I don't want to give you a whole background on who Joey is because it would not give him justice. He gives Ryan a run for his money in this book. He becomes even stronger in this book because of what occurs in the first part of this book. Going home wasn't going to be easy, but walking into a situation that will hurt him was worse. This man not only has to be strong for himself but also for Nichole, because she is a shell of a woman at the beginning. He has to be the one that teaches her that its ok to stand up for herself and her child. Joey does what a real man should do throughout this book and you can only love him more. He has endured more that can be imagined but he never backs away from something he wants and he wants Nichole. Nichole is this fragile woman that needs to learn to fight for herself. Her perdicment in the beginning is hard to deal with, it will break your heart, but that is when you learn what she is made of. She works on getting on the right path and with Joey's help I think that she will find her way. These two have a connection and you will see that throughout the book.I
I absolutely loved this series. It made me have so many emotions throughout that honestly I am so glad I got to read it. The writing was so thought out that you felt you were with this group of people all the way through the book. I am still a fan favorite of Ryan and Haylee, but Joey and Nichole I felt had a more difficult time just because of the situation in their book. I can't wait to read more from Megan. I am so glad I read this series.
This is Joey's story and what a story it is. I loved seeing Joey in the first two books and knew he would be an amazing man. Not just a hero in my eyes, because he served his country but just because he is such an amazing friend.
Joey and Nichole were the best of friends. They started as friends and dated as teenagers till he decided to go into the military and she wanted him to stay home. To say i felt she was selfish is an understatement, but i understand why she wanted him to stay. One mistake and their life long friendship is changed. Now with an Injury that sends him home he became a cop. Joey never forgot Nicole and with him back fate steps in and he meets a broken Nichole.
This whole series will make you ugly cry and send you on an emotional ride. I couldn't seem to get off this ride if my life depended on it. These books have stuck with me.
I loved Joey in the first two books. He always seemed so happy. He didn't let his injury slow him down or make his happy disposition fail him. I always wondered why he seemed on the wounded side when it came to woman. Nichole oh man she has been through the ringer. I feel so bad for her but at the same time she made her bed. These two deserve each other but are super stubborn. I loved how Nichole slowly grew into her own as the book went on and it made me love her even more. Megan Green writes books i so wish were made into movies. Everytime i read them they play like a movie in my mind and i can't help but fall in love with her writing all over again.
Joey and Nichole were highschool sweethearts that couldn’t survive Joey’s decision to join the military. Joey left and went to war. Nichole stayed home, but fought her own war in her home every day.
This story was so well told and I enjoyed the emotions that it brought out in me...even the sobbing I found myself doing several times. I have read several stories with spousal abuse, but I have never found the heroine to be as understandable as I did Nichole. I got why she stayed with her husband, James, and why she found her strength to finally leave him.
AND Joey was the perfect book boyfriend. He was supportive and understanding and loyal and heartwarming and all around amazing guy (which we kind of knew from the other books, but not really). Let’s not forget cute little Cade who stole my heart in the playground scene with Joey.
My favorite Joey quote was during a scene when Joey was taking care of Nichole after another encounter with James:
“Whenever you aren’t next to me, I feel like a junkie, just aching for my next fix, for that sweet relief that only a hit of my drug of choice can provide. You’re my drug, Nichole. Ou and that charming kid of yours. And I don’t ever want to get clean.”
I loved this book and wish there were more because Ms Green does great military romance!
*** I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book ***
Wow! Megan, what did you do to my emotions?? I think this book was my favorite of the 3.
Joey decides it is time to move back home after being gone for over a decade. What kind of emotions will surface when he finds the love of his life has been enduring years of abuse? Joey may have left Nichole behind all those years ago but did the feelings they had for each other remain alive? Can they rebuild what they once had?
Gah! I’m so sad to see this series come to an end! Can’t wait to see what is up next for Megan!
4.5/5 Stars!! Spoiler Free Review I was lucky enough to get to read the three books in this series back to back. Let me tell you…there is a Kleenex graveyard in the trash can by my bed. Solid Ground is the story of Joey and Nichole. Joey was first introduced in the second book and was sort of the funny one. He could be counted on to provide some much needed laughter-filled relief. But in Solid Ground, we get to see the real Joey…and there isn’t anything funny anymore. He has suffered big time while in Iraq and now that he is back home, all he wants to do is keep his mind occupied and stay out of his own head. Nichole isn’t in much better shape. He unknowingly comes to her rescue and all those buried sparks shoot to the surface. I love second chance romances. They are by far my favorite. This one was really good. Two people once happy with each other, now apart and broken until fate intervenes. It is a classic tale and done oh so well. This series has gotten better and better with each book. Solid Ground is definitely the best to date (but I keep saying that, so…). I can’t wait to see what else Megan Green brings us.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, abuse, pain, and heartbreak.
If you have not already read the below I would recommend reading those books first: Safe Distance (Wounded Love #1) Soldier's Heart (Wounded Love #2)
This is Nichole and Joey’s story. Joey and Nichole were in love until he wanted to go into the military and she wanted him to stay home with her. One bad decision changed these two forever. Now years later they meet again but Nichole is broken. Joey wants to help her but does she want to help herself? Can she trust Joey to help? When old feelings are brought to the front will they be able to resist? Or will the love they had for each other concur all? What happens when danger comes for her? Will she run into danger or run from it? Can she save herself?
I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
** ARC provided by the Author for an honest review **
Solid Ground (Wounded Love #3) by Megan Green is such a heartfelt, emotional story that will leave you with a book hangover. Ms. Green writes excellent military romance stories.
This is the story of Joey and Nichole, high school sweethearts that are torn apart by Joey's decision to join the military and subsequently be sent off to war.
We see the struggle Nichole has in her own life being (post Joey) married to James. The things she endures and the reasons she stays are very realistic.
When Joey returns they still share their deep emotional connection. Will true love win?
Be sure to keep tissues with you when you read this story.
Solid Ground is my absolute favorite from the Wounded Love series. Megan's ability to make you feel for her characters get better and better with each book.
Solid Ground is a 2nd chance romance filled with everything you could want in a book. There was some angst, suspense, heartbreak, and of course happiness. Joey is the perfect book boyfriend. The compassion he shows towards Nichole after so many years is amazing. And the care he shows towards other characters as well. Everyone needs a Joey in their life.
Although I'm sad to say goodbye to these characters, I can't wait to see what else Megan will come up with next!
This was a beautiful story of a second chance for two wonderful people who were dealt a bad hand and finally get a chance at love. This book is about Joey and Nichole. Nichole and Joey went their loved each other since they met in elementary school. Joey decides to join the army and Nichole couldn't take it. They went their separate ways but found their way back to each other after 12 years. Will they finally find their HEA. Read it and see. You won't be disappointed!! Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!! Happy reading!!
I enjoyed this book- I wish I had known it was a part of a series before I started it (my fault- I didn't read the description well enough beforehand), but it's a testament to the writing that I was already about 30% in before I realized it. The author gave enough background that it really didn't matter. The characters were well-written and likeable (well, as long as they were supposed to be likeable). I will go back and read the first two books because now I'm curious about Joey's friends!
I love everything about this story and this series!! One of my favorites and Megan has quickly become a favorite Author for me. If you haven't read this series, I can't recommend it highly enough.
This book. It was a tough one. And if you’re sensitive to triggers, it’s definitely not to you. That said, it was a pretty awesome story - brutal and honest and terribly raw, but also wonderfully sweet and redemptive.
I felt like the romance was a little light – the focus was more on Nichole’s journey, which included a tender and bittersweet romance, but ultimately was about so much more than that. I loved Nichole – her strength and the kindness of her heart - and my own heart broke for her so many times. I adored her relationship with Joey – both past and present. They were perfect together. Their light balanced out a whole lot of darkness in this book.
And there aren’t enough good things to be said about Joey. I freaking loved him. He was strong, and steady, and kind. He was an alpha without being an alpha-hole – all that fierce protectiveness balanced out by a light sense of humor and a love of big goofy dogs and shy adorable kids. He was the perfect hero, and it was impossible not to get attached to him.
There were moments where the story went a little over the top for me, and moments where I really wished I felt more butterflies over the budding romance – but in the end it wasn’t really that kind of book. Don't get me wrong - the butterflies and romance are there. But it’s ultimately a story about growth and overcoming some pretty intensely horrible life situations. It’s a story about healing and learning to love yourself and accepting true love from others. It’s a journey – and sometimes not a very pretty one. It’s wonderfully and respectfully written and – in the end, completely heartwarming and well worth the read. ~ Shelly, 4 Stars
If you're a sucker for a second chance romance and a military romance, read Solid Ground.
It's no secret that I love Megan Green's books. But this book, it has officially become my most favorite from all the other books in the Wounded Love novels. I love EVERYTHING about it. I've been waiting for Joey's story practically after I finished Soldier's Heart.
Solid Ground is a second chance romance between an ex-military man and his childhood best friend. Joey is everything you want in a guy. And Nichole, despite the terrible life she had, she was one strong woman. And Cade, this shy and cute little man who's learned a lot in the early years of his life, I adore him.
This book consumed me to the end. Megan's writing keeps getting better and better, and I'm so looking forward what she has in store for us.
I do not cry when I read books but dang it Megan if you didn't make me need a box of Kleenex! I loved finding out more about Joey and Nichole. Parts were hard to read and made my heart hurt but as we know, good always triumphs over evil. If I could have throat punched and beat James through the pages I would have. Bravo on another great book and addition to a wonderful series. Hope to see/read much more from you in the future. ❤️
I'm going to give this book a harsh but honest rating. I thought the first book in this series was great. I haven't read the 2nd one yet--I skipped to the 3rd book. I had some issues with this story that prevented me from plowing through it like I did for book 1. For example, Joey is an amputee and that part of the story was barely even touched. How did that affect him? Nichole? Another part that I struggled with was the empty promise that Joey kept making to Nichole to protect her and never let her get hurt again. He said it 3 times and 3 times she got hurt again. ??? I also wondered how nobody questioned Nichole's injuries enough to file criminal charges (not nurses, Dr's, neighbors or Mario)--or at least call child protective services. I found there to be a lot of holes in this story. I would love to have beta read for this book. It wasn't a bad book--just needed to be developed a bit more.
I'll definitely go back and read book 2--Emma and Isiah's story, because I think Megan Green is a talented author.
I love everything about this story and this series!! One of my favorites and Megan has quickly become a favorite Author for me. If you haven't read this series, I can't recommend it highly enough.
"You're my drug Nichole... and I don't ever want to get clean." ~Joey
Megan Green's Solid Ground allowed me to experience the best of two of my favorite romantic genres. It is a top-notch military romance and meaningful second-chance romance that grips the spirit and encourages the soul.
In the first few chapters of the novel we are introduced to Joey Roberts and Nichole Hadley, two youths who meet as children and foster a relationship that starts to blossom into something more than just childhood "friends." Their connection is overwhelming and it is electric but it is ultimately thwarted and burned to ash by real-life circumstances that extinguish any hope for their desires to bloom into something more in the future.
Joey elects to join the military; he is sent to Iraq and his life is irrevocably shattered by a horrendous injury. He returns home to his roots and joins the police force, where he encounters a second dose of life-altering events that return him to his childhood sweetheart and force him to reconsider every decision that he originally made to escape the demons of his past.
This book left an impression on me that will remain imprinted on my spirit for a very long time.
Now this is another instance where I have to keep it real, because this book angered and infuriated me to the point where I needed some wine.
*takes a deep gulp of alcohol as I continue*
There is no doubt that Megan Green's incredible writing and the moving, rousing way that she portrays the events that Joey and Nichole experience on the road to rediscovery inspired me to aspire for something more.
Solid Ground is truly a force to be reckoned with and yes, it will excite you at the same time that it will eviscerate you emotionally.
Do not get it twisted.
Solid Ground will infuriate you.
I raged while I was reading.
No joke: I had to contain myself to keep my screams at bay so that I did not dissolve into tears when the **** hit the fan in this book.
It is hard to read at times, but I can assure you that it was worth every minute that I invested into reading it.
I say so because the events that reunited Joey and Nichole shattered me and broke my heart at the same time that they provoked a deep-seeded need for me to reconsider some of the events that occurred in my own past and ponder the true substance surrounding the word "fate."
Please do not hate me for not elaborating further. I simply cannot expound because this is a spoiler-free review.
Just know that Solid Ground has many themes.
What I will remember most about this thought-provoking book is the manner in which it addresses how the invigoration of the human spirit can rejuvenate feelings from the past and reignite the power of love.
Please read this incredibly awe-inspiring novel.
I honestly do not know why it is not getting more attention because it is truly one of the finest masterpieces of the year.
Solid Ground is a sweet story of second chances and the courage to protect those you love. This book is the third in Megan Green's Wounded Love series and features Joey, a steady secondary character in the previous books. I was so excited when I realized that this was his story! Joey is a brilliant male lead and seeing him get his happily ever after was just what I wanted.
Second chance romances are some of my favorites and we jump right into Joey and Nichole's story 12 years after it all fell apart. I loved how this story was communicated. We see what is happening in the present and Green expands their story by sharing past moments that enhance what we is going on. I loved watching them meet as kids and how they went from best friends to something deeper. Each flashback is vital to the story and gives us deeper roots in what is happening. The book jumps from Joey's POV to Nichole's, allowing us to get a bigger picture of what is developing. While parts of the story might seem predictable, you cannot help but enjoy the story as you read.
I loved watching Nichole and Cade in this book, seeing the two of them transform from fearful to full of hope. Joey is key to this transformation and seeing it unfold is sweet and heartfelt. The theme of abuse is hard to read but Green does a fantastic job of sharing the realities while showing everyone that there is something that can be done. There are people who love them both in the midst of the suffering and those that are there to help lead them out. It is intense but so bittersweet to read.
Megan Green has added another solid story to the Wounded Love series, one that you will not want to miss. I fell in love with Joey and Nichole's messy love story! Don't miss this second chance story.
I had a hard time to finish this book, It wasn't bad but it just wasn't as good as the previous ones. I put this book down several times because it would bored me. I did push thru to keep reading it and finished it, I guess I was expecting this book to be as great as the others in this series, but it just didn't cut it for me, maybe it did for other readers, but for me it didn't. I guess I was expecting more intensity from the story, more demons from Joey, but this was just an easy smooth story aside from Nicole being abused by her husband and the fucked up system they had on that small town to not care when she had intended to press charges on her abuser. I'm somewhat disappointed, but I'll get over it on my next book fix.
