Capture the World

Rate this book
"They called me a breakdown waiting to happen. He didn’t see a breakdown. He saw me." I see people. The way they travel through life like a blurred stream of light. I am one of them, these people, and we’re all light blasting together from one place to another. We’re all trying to be a part of the world, and yet not be a part of it. Like we’re trying to ball the world up into our hands and hold onto it. That’s me. Trying to capture it. The world. To keep it with me awhile before it goes away. My mom is a traveler, and she takes me with her everywhere. I am ashamed. I am proud. I want to catch her and make the world stop spinning. Maybe make it spin backwards, so that she is changed. The worst part is the fear I see when people look at me. As if I’m her. As if I’m going to be her. I’m not. But I wish I was. Because she doesn’t see our world. She has her own, and it’s beautiful. Her life. Her extraordinary world. My name is Reagan Lawson, a seventeen-year-old seasoned traveler without a passport. My life. My origami world. His name is Matthew Moretti. Senior basketball star, handsome, and as far from my complicated world as he can get, he surprises me with his interest, with the way he pulls me into a world I didn't want any part of. Until now. His life. His surprising world.

This was my first book by Ms. Ryals and what a beautiful read. She knows how to write characters you come to care about. It deals with some heavy issues but it's also full of hope, strength, and love. Did I cry? You betcha. This one will stay with me for awhile. If you like romantic, gripping tales, pick this one up.

This book folded me. with every chapter I read a new fold was made.

And just like that, I am paper.

My heart, the rarest and softest of papers, took a cut with each new crease.

And the further I read
the more I bleed.

And nothing fits; the pieces don't match.

paper cuts are the absolute worst.

And with the smallest trickles of blood and tears the edges glide into their spot.

Paper is stronger than we think.

I really enjoyed this story, but it was definitely a case of me expecting something so much bigger..and overall only loving it 3.5 stars! This book has a lot of really important themes for the YA genre. A mother with mental illness tops the charts - it really was heartbreaking! High schoolers and the typical girl drama, bullying, jock stereotypes, etc. I thought the roles of Matthew and Reagan were very strong, and the bond they forged throughout the book made me smile!

With a current 4.59 avg rating and a lot of really nice reviews - I really expected to be blown away. Still a really good YA read!!

Once again, RK Ryals has written a story that will be forever in my heart. A YA romance that is both quirky and soulful, she captures the awkwardness of the teenage world perfectly. Seamlessly combining heartache and shame with the wonder of love.

Reagan does not have an easy life. Her mom is delusional after a horrific loss and lives in a never-ending journey around the globe. Meaning that she travels to faraway places, often with Reagan as her sole companion all the while never leaving the safety and confines of her bedroom. And as Reagan at 17 continues to be there for her mom, her Aunt Trish and Uncle Bobby, it's the boy down the street who finally sees her and gives her the chance to fly.

The sweet, tender and slow-burning love story that is Reagan and Matthew Moretti was simply beautiful. Watching as Reagan falls for the star basketball player, always wondering why and finding it hard to accept that she would matter to anyone else but her family. Being able to finally shed those long-held fears concerning her mentally ill mother and letting go with Matthew was such a wonderful thing to witness. She truly is that skittish butterfly who has finally found her reason to fly.

Although this book deals with some heavier issues, the author somehow makes it light. There are numerous scenes that had me laughing out loud, especially with respect to the Moretti clan. They are quite the family and were the perfect counterpoint to all the insecurities that both Reagan and Matthew had to contend with.

This is a simply lovely read that has filled my soul with complete happiness. It is a 5 star read that I highly recommend especially when you want something to read that will put a huge smile on your face. There is truly nothing better.

Reagan and Mathew. He is the star basketball player at school and she is the girl that everyone avoids and doesn't talk to.
Reagan's mother faces a mental illness; Mathew has a hearing problem himself. He tries to reach her and makes her reveal her true self to him.
This book was so beautifully written and it shows that sometimes, when you love someone and bad things happen, you should still be proud of one and still show your love and support and not be ashamed of.
This is the second book I read from this author and so far, I really like her stories and her writing.

This book was so unique, so beautiful and it truly made my heart full. There are so may different worlds in this book. The world of silence, the world of imagination, the world of paper, the world of helplessness, the world of oblivion and the world of unconditional love. I loved everything about this story! I loved the letters, the videos and the "travelling" but mostly that it has soul. <3

5 STARS

"I forget there's a world and that I'm trying to capture it."

I don't know where to start. I feel like I've used up all of my words trying to describe how much I love this author and her books. Every time I read one of her books I'm in awe and I think it can't get any better than this and then she writes another one. Each of her books speak to me in some way and this one was no different. This was a beautiful story about finding hope, finding yourself, and it brought mental illness to light.

I loved the characters, the storyline, and I found it to be heartbreakingly beautiful. Matthew and Reagan stole my heart. They left me in tears and with a huge smile on my face. I devoured this one in one sitting and I think I highlighted half the book! This is now my top book of 2016!

"The hardest steps to take are usually the best ones we ever took."

OMG Regina has done it to me again! I ugly cried so hard that the dog tried to console me. This woman. Her words. My heart. AAAHHH

Mental illness is not something I have experience with but that did not make the MC, Reagan, any less relatable. I am definitely familiar with making myself invisible and ignoring the whispers.

My favorite character - Matthew. Why? Because he went against the grain (with a nudge from nonna). Matthew turned out to be so much more than just a good looking jock. And he didn't save Reagan, they helped each other.

Capture the World us a beautifully written story by the amazingly talented, rip your heart out and stomp it before shoving it back in, R.K. Ryals. It shows us that we are not one sided, but multifaceted and that it is okay to live in more than one world.

A five star read

Another fantastic book from R K Ryals. I devoured it in one sitting and loved how it dealt with the relationships between not only the main characters but also family dynamics.

Have you ever highlighted so many sections of a book that you feel like you can re-live the whole story with just the notebook portion of the book? I have. The main thing in common with those books is that they are usually written by R.K. Ryals and let me tell you; Capture the World is no exception.

Oddbasketcasestrangecrazynutspshchoweirddistant. That's Reagan Lawson in a nutshell. Or is it? Well that's what everyone else thinks. Reagan is the girl they all watch; waiting for her to go crazy like her mother. Ten years ago Georgie Lawson, Reagan’s mother, suffered a breakdown of epic proportions. Now living with her delusional mother, aunt and uncle, Reagan tries to find her way through life, balancing the fine line of her home life, spent traveling to through her mother’s imagination, and the stark reality of high school.

Matthew Morretti. Popular senior basketball star. Ruggedly handsome. According to Reagan “He smells like cherries, soap and paradise.” and after living down the street for years, he surprises Reagan with his interest. With secrets of his own, Matthew is bound and determined to break down Reagan’s walls and draw her out. What follows is a sweet, and sometimes heart-squeezing, tale of relationships and mental illness.

A description pulled from the book regarding a character also manages to describe Ms. Ryals perfectly. “She has a way of painting images with her words.” <
Capture the World is a wonderful Young Adult novel that transcends the boundaries of the book world. Is there romance? Yes. Is there teen angst? Yes. But there is so, so much more than that. There is an understanding of the world we live in that is beyond classifying a genre. I would not hesitate to suggest it to a 14-year-old high-schooler and in the very next breath my best friend’s grandmother. Pick it up, sit down and enjoy.

I honestly don't even know how to word what I want to say. I always think that the last book I've read from this author was the best; then I read the newest one and I'm like 'WOW'. I don't know how she speaks to me. I don't know how she finds the darkest pieces of my soul that lay hidden from the world and brings them out to showcase them. One day her brilliance will be seen. Capture the World is everything to me. Everything. I loved every word. Thank you to the author for writing this. Thank you for writing something that gives insight to those who have someone they love dealing with a mental illness as an outlet to fly into another world. Don't pass up on this contemporary. Snatch it up. Sit down, get comfortable and get lost into the world of R.K. Ryals.

Beautiful story. I really enjoy books about dealing and coping with mental illness, probably because there is some in my own home and even though it is different I still feel a sense of understanding, of empathy, and maybe even a little belonging. I maybe become part of the story.

Feeling too

I've never commented on a book before or left a summary of how I felt reading it. But this one book had me feeling so much I just had to let others know. I was there every step of the way with Raegan. I felt every emotion she felt especially her pain. I haven't lost my parents or siblings, thank the lord for that, but the way this story was written I felt it. I was crying almost every three chapters at the most simple things. If I had to recommend a book , this would be it and the reason behind that is one word, LOVE. This story CAPTURED MY HEART, and I will never forget it.

A phenomenal book by a phenomenal author!!

The way R.K. Ryals writes is so similar to how Reagan’s mom brings their travels to life. She weaves a tale and creates a world so tangible that when the story ends you feel like you’ve woken up, and all you really want to do is go back to that world.

I don’t really have the right words to say how much I enjoyed this book. It was raw in its look at dealing with a family member with mental illness. It was real in how we can get so wrapped up in our own life, our own struggles, our own reality that we can miss things happening around us (good or bad). It was perfect in the way it ended... hopeful.

Recommended for all ages!!!! Even though she writes for young people about young people, the story is for everyone. This book is about mental illness. An issue that almost everyone has to deal with, this book has so much depth to it. I loved it!! Thanks for another great read R K Ryals!!!!

I think R.K. Ryals write really well and I have enjoyed a lot of her work, but this one did not impress. Some interesting ideas, but overall it's just a teenage romance full of clichés.

"I am my mother's daughter, a seventeen-year-old seasoned traveler with a cardboard passport full of stickers."

I have to admit that it was the cover and title alone that pulled at me to read this little gem. I never read anything by this author, but I had to hold off reading it due to my busy schedule. Well, it wouldn't leave me alone. The book kept calling to me. I decided to open it up one night and read a chapter or two before I went to sleep. At first, I had a hard time connecting with the main character and some of the metaphors didn't work for me. But, I needed to understand her and I kept reaching for that connection. Then I met her mom. I was hooked.
I'm so glad I didn't put it down, because once I got to know these characters and spend time with them I didn't want it to end. The plot was original and I love the gentle hand the author used to paint such a beautiful, raw and heartbreaking story. The deep connection between Reagan and her mom is something I can't even put into words.
This author is a master of the feels and my god you will feel it all. I loved the build up and how the relationship between Raegan and Matthew played out.

"All of this complicated folding and unfolding that will, hopefully make sense in the end."

It does. The characters have so much depth and the plot was executed flawlessly. Honestly, one of the best I've read this year came from this book and the characters never even said a word.

"He's invited me into his world where words mean less than feeling."

You won't just capture the world, you'll take it with you.
Your heart will be shaken and stirred.
Your world will be changed.

This book is beautiful, but too short. I highlighted several passages because the writing is just so pretty and poignant. However, it ended before I knew it. There's so much potential for more to be explored for these characters, it seems a shame it ended when it did. 5 stars anyway, because what was there was was spectacular.

Oh. My. God.

I've just fell in love with a book. I have a list of books that I hold in the 'fell in love' category, this is going in.

What a deep and emotional book. A tug at your heartstrings, pass me the pillow and tissues, stare into space in awe, hold my face and wipe my tears book.

I loved Reagan's character. I felt her pain, her joy, her heartbreak, her happiness, her loneliness. I loved Matthew's character too. To live with an impairment that many of us take for granted and not let it affect you, it was amazing. It's a true testament to an author who can make you feel the characters. Ryals did a brilliant job of sucking me in.

Reagan's mothers mental health issues touched a nerve with me, I used to work with the elderly. 80% of the elderly residents I worked with had some form of Dementia, which we all know can be debilitating. To see a person lose their fight against their own mind is heartbreaking. The way this was touched on in the book? Heartwarming.

I don't really know how best to describe this book. I only know how it made me feel. Happy? Yes. Sad? Yes. Heartbroken? At times. Love? Yes. I felt all those things and more. From beginning to end I was so caught up, I was blind to everything else. I loved it.

I'm going to leave it there, I don't know what else to say.

Happy Reading :-)

I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS WRITER'S WORDS. I want to climb up a tall building and shout my love for this book. This was my second book by the author and I'm still just as impressed (even more) than I was when I read another one of her books.

The way she writes itself is beautiful. She literally has a way of stringing a sentence together to make you just swoon. I feel so relaxed and calm while reading her books. Now, with most books, you can see the imagery the author is painting. But this book? This author? I could feel, touch, hear, sense, see, almost everything. I was BLOWN AWAY. I've highlighted so many things that just touched me and I want to remember.

This is a YA contemporary romance. I usually don't read this genre, but I had to because of the author. I trusted her and I'm so glad I did.

I don't even want to describe what happens in the book, something you have to experience for yourself. Just know this book will open your eyes. It will make you see everything from a different perspective. I would so recommend this book for anyone that is 14 and up.

5 stars!
