Have you ever highlighted so many sections of a book that you feel like you can re-live the whole story with just the notebook portion of the book? I have. The main thing in common with those books is that they are usually written by R.K. Ryals and let me tell you; Capture the World is no exception.
Oddbasketcasestrangecrazynutspshchoweirddistant. That's Reagan Lawson in a nutshell. Or is it? Well that's what everyone else thinks. Reagan is the girl they all watch; waiting for her to go crazy like her mother. Ten years ago Georgie Lawson, Reagan’s mother, suffered a breakdown of epic proportions. Now living with her delusional mother, aunt and uncle, Reagan tries to find her way through life, balancing the fine line of her home life, spent traveling to through her mother’s imagination, and the stark reality of high school.
Matthew Morretti. Popular senior basketball star. Ruggedly handsome. According to Reagan “He smells like cherries, soap and paradise.” and after living down the street for years, he surprises Reagan with his interest. With secrets of his own, Matthew is bound and determined to break down Reagan’s walls and draw her out. What follows is a sweet, and sometimes heart-squeezing, tale of relationships and mental illness.
A description pulled from the book regarding a character also manages to describe Ms. Ryals perfectly. “She has a way of painting images with her words.” <
Capture the World is a wonderful Young Adult novel that transcends the boundaries of the book world. Is there romance? Yes. Is there teen angst? Yes. But there is so, so much more than that. There is an understanding of the world we live in that is beyond classifying a genre. I would not hesitate to suggest it to a 14-year-old high-schooler and in the very next breath my best friend’s grandmother. Pick it up, sit down and enjoy.
