Having given her trust to Cade and his companions, Rhiann comes face to face with the terror of the sidhe and discovers the true threat they represent to her people--and in so doing, takes her place as a full member of Cade's war band. But even as his relationship with Rhiann deepens, Cade knows that only he can stand at the crossroads between the Underworld and the free people of Wales and prevent the war that the wayward god Mabon hopes to unleash.
The Pendragon's Blade is the second novella (30,000 words) in The Last Pendragon Saga. (The Last Pendragon Saga was originally published as two volumes: The Last Pendragon and The Pendragon's Quest.)
With over a million books sold to date, Sarah Woodbury is the author of more than forty novels, all set in medieval Wales. Although an anthropologist by training, and then a full-time homeschooling mom for twenty years, she began writing fiction when the stories in her head overflowed and demanded that she let them out. While her ancestry is Welsh, she only visited Wales for the first time at university. She has been in love with the country, language, and people ever since. She even convinced her husband to give all four of their children Welsh names.
Sarah is a member of the Historical Authors Fiction Cooperative (HFAC), the Historical Novel Society, and Novelists, Inc. (NINC).
Mercifully short read. Throwing everything together and having demons & dark gods to blame . Oh well, I'll try the third installment and then tell you what I really think! Just one small point: publishing a "saga" as a series of eight brief novellas is an inspired, if not-quite-ethical, way of generating extra income. I'm glad I picked up on that this early.
If someone had told me as I read the first book that Rhiann would be part of defending villagers and kill man after man with her sniper like archer ability, I would have been shocked. I really enjoyed that about her. She isn't just Cade's tragic love interest. She could easily be made a knight if she wasn't female.
They rescue a friend from the same dungeon where Cade is being kept. This part is a little weird to me. This guy and Cade have a conversation about their belief in Christianity. Cade has been made into a sidhe by an evil faery. I'm pretty sure that they have spoken about other entities that were believed in during that time period. Yet, Christianity. And the dude questions how Cade can be a christian if he is sidhe. I have to question that as well. Cade believes he will eventually go to hell, but as long as he exists on Earth, it is his duty to do what is right?
Cade begins to call Rhiann " cariad." He wants her to move on to a real man, yet he loves her with all he has. Rhiann takes this endearment to mean that she will eventually break through to him if she gives him time. So she rides with Dayvid. She thinks she is doing what will put Cade at ease, and as it is what he wants, it also makes him sad with jealousy.
By the end of the story, Cade finds out what the enemy is really after, and I have to guess that Cade will ride right to that castle to destroy or be destroyed. ( Obviously, he won't be. The series is named for him).
Well I gave this series my best college try. The series just could not grab and hold my attention. Two books into the series and I only began to care slightly about Rhiannon even though she only appears sporadically and has little dialogue.
Again, my hats off and GREAT kudos to Tom Mumford and his outstanding performance and mastery of Old Welsh names and locations.
Sarah, I am still interested in Wales so perhaps I will try another book or series in the future. This one just didn’t connect with me.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title within the series set box. (Audible Membership)
I appreciate the narrator's pronunciations of the welsh names, which add both authenticity and a degree of difficulty for those not acquainted with the Welch language. The story of demons accompanying the opposing Saxon forces adds a bit of fantasy to a historical tale. As does the retrieval of a sword from the location that has been deemed as that of Arthur's domain.
I read everything I find Arthurian. I believe "The Once and Future King" set me on my path with Arthur. I keep giving it away so the one I have must be my 5th book. There are so many good books about Arthur. I try to read them all. If you love Arthur, you will enjoy this book about kings and knights.
This is another fantastic book by Sarah Woodbury. My only complaint is the books are too short. Yet because of my life I don't dare buy the rest of the series as I wouldn't do anything except read. Take some time off and just read and enjoy.
Exciting story - fast moving and intriguing. Ms. Woodbury is a captivating story teller - history, fantasy, and romance, just my cup of tea! There are 8 books in all but they are all on kindle unlimited. I am now on to book 3 - Song of the Pendragon.
This is a quick read that can easily be read in an afternoon. It is the second book in a three book saga. So yes, it ends without a conclusion. I enjoyed I though and am ready for the third book.
Another very good read in the Last Pendragon series. But also a lot of violence…a lot of battles fought and demons confronted. More heroes revealed. There are some minor developments in the relationship between Rhiann and Cade.
The sequence of The Last Pendragon series novellas reminds me of the I Am Number 4 series; fast paced, fun, and a diversity of characters with their own story lines to keep things interesting.
Sarah Woodbury weaves an intriguing tale combining legend, mythology, and history about the last of of the Pendragon lineage. More than simply human, Cade, is the subject of long standing prophecy concerning the leadership of Wales. As the last heir in the family tree of King Arthur, he must once again unite all of Wales. He gas the help of a few loyal friends in his quest. And it will take all of them to battle an evil the world has never known before. Excellent story telling. And an imaginative continuation of the Pendragon line of kings. I highly recommend this series.
I'm so enthralled that I can't wait to see what happens next. It's hard to tell if this is going to have a HEA but I continue to be entrigued with this series. Sarah is such a captivating story teller.
I'm really enjoying these books. I have read so many Arthurian books and it is nice to have something with the same flavor but with its own direction. The characters are well developed and the story line is fast moving and intriguing. I'm ready for book 3!
