While I didn't identify as closely with Sloane as I did with Taylor in the last book, I still really enjoyed this story. Sloane has issues, a boatload of them, and is all too aware of the fact. While others see her as doing everything she can to care for her patients, even ones other nurses don't like to help (smelly drunkards, etc), she sees herself as worthless and beyond grace. Add to that the whole bit, carried over from the second book, of her being still on the run from whoever her worthless ex-fiancé cheated and the people who knocked her car off a cliff in the last book.

I felt that the characters were quite interesting and the writing itself is excellent. Candace Calvert is a talented author and is newly on my favorites list. I especially appreciated that the romance wasn't just focused on looks and was free of sensuality, and that the book is free of profanity and crude slang.

Christian message: Sloane had believed for a time in her girlhood, but life got in the way and faith dropped aside. She now must accept that grace is even for such a she is.

Now, I'm an animal lover in general and always enjoy pets in stories. Cat lovers in particular are going to love Sloane's spunky black kitten, Marty!

I received a free ebook copy from NetGalley for review purposes. I am glad to report that, after getting approved to read this and realizing it was the last of a series, I got the other two books from the church library and have now discovered a great new-to-me author who was previously not on my radar. :)

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH NET GALLEY. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

I've been reading this author for quite a while now, and it seems like things really changed at the end of the Grace Medical series. I found I had a lot of problems with the characters in the books and this one was no exception. I've hated Sloane since her first introduction, and this book was no exception to that.

To me, Sloane has always been this aloof, selfish character, and while she lost the selfishness, she is still very much an aloof person. We learn a bit of her reasoning behind that, but much of her path to redemption felt like she was just going through the motions because it was what others expected of her, not anything she wanted to do for herself. I felt that she never wanted the redemption, never wanted the close relationship with God, and that she would be perfectly happy moving on when things got too tough for her.

Micah was a hard character for me to understand. I could understand his grieving, and even understand his anger toward people who drank and drove, but it seemed like he took it one step further and hated anyone who drank alcohol at all! It felt irrational, and judgemental. By the end of the book, he even realized that he was being so judgemental!

The relationship between Micah and Sloane felt forced, awkward, and slightly manipulative. Sloane held too much of herself back, having too many secrets that weren't good for herself. I couldn't see how they would make it work, with how little Micah knew of Sloane.

While the overall romance plot was lackluster at best, what really kept me interested in this book was the Russian Mafia/Human Trafficking sub-plot. Those characters really got under my skin! I started really caring about what happened to the girls, wondering if they would survive. It shed some light on a murky and ugly topic, and I'm sure it was tough to tackle!

All things considered, I'm rather hesitant to continue to purchase books by the author with how much I've disliked these past 4 books. Likely as not, I'll request from the library first.

Maybe It's You is the third book in Candace Calvert's 'Crisis Team' series. It's the best, in my opinion. Calvert is a retired trauma nurse, so she knows her stuff. I love medical drama and I love Christian fiction and I love suspense. Calvert manages to combine all three to the absolute best advantage. She crafts believable characters, has plot lines that keep readers on the edge of their chairs and the food she describes makes me want to pull up a chair alongside the characters as they partake of the delicious meals during the book. Seriously.

Sloane Ferrell is trying her best to hide from her past; she's changed her name, job and location. It's been six months without a blip and she's beginning to relax just a bit. Then one encounter in the hospital ER parking lot changes everything.

Micah Prescott is the hospital's marketing man and he's out to find the 'Face of Hope', the one employee who exemplifies what the hospital stands for, hope for all who enter the doors. He thinks it just might be Sloane Ferrell, but she doesn't want anything to do with it. Nothing whatsoever, and she tells him so in no uncertain terms.

Sloane's past is painful, even from young childhood and she trusts no one. She wants to trust Micah, but she's so very wary. Then pieces from her past begin to slip in and terrifies her. She is already dealing with so much pain and anxiety. How can she handle even one more tiny thing, much less something of this magnitude?

Calvert has created a wonderful book here, folks. Enough suspense is here to satisfy any suspense fan. I know it surely did me. A lot is going on here, too. Heartbreaking things. I was in tears several times during the reading.

In the midst of all this tension and suspense, Calvert has inserted the most powerful theme of God's grace, forgiveness, and redemption. Very powerful. She doesn't hold back one bit with her spiritual message and that's something that I admire in the author of a Christian fiction book. I have been ministered to many times reading CF books and this book is one reason why. During one particular scene in the hospital when Sloane is dealing with a homeless man had me weeping. Amazing.

God cares about all His creation, no matter what they've done or how they feel about themselves. He is standing by, right by your side, waiting to welcome this person with open arms. Don't miss this one. It's powerful.

I have been eagerly awaiting Sloane’s story. From the first time she was introduced, I knew her story needed to be told. I was thrilled when I found out the author was going to feature her in Maybe it’s You. While I didn’t get to read the book all in one sitting, I sure wanted to. The drama taking place inside and outside of the hospital was mesmerizing. I seriously did not want to put the book down. This story is filled with suspense, action, medical jargon, faith, and forgiveness. Calvert has a way of putting the reader right into the heart of the battles that take place for people’s lives on a daily basis. I have a lot of experience with emergency rooms and I felt like I could see, hear, feel, and smell everything in the ER. My heartstrings were pulled tight and squeezed until I almost couldn’t breathe. But thankfully, no oxygen mask was needed! :-)

Sloane’s past is heartbreaking, disturbing, and completely redeemable by our loving and grace-giving God. Her path to redemption was realistic in that she struggled with her self-worth and the horrid things she has been told by others who were only out to use and abuse her. When you’ve been treated this way, it’s hard to believe that there is any forgiveness available.

Micah. Oh, Micah. Your journey almost leaves me speechless. How many times do we think we have it all figured out only to have something happen to show us that we have been harboring ill will or hard feelings about a certain situation and finally when we turn it over to the Lord, we are free!

I laughed and cried while reading Maybe it’s You. There are moments in the story that are so very precious. One scene, in particular, had me tearing up and hoping I wasn’t going to break down myself. Working together like a well-oiled machine, the compliment of characters is simply amazing. If I could, I would want to hear more about so many of them. They have cemented themselves in my heart for a long time to come. I’m secretly hoping that down the line, Coop and Zoey (two prominent secondary characters) get their own stories, even if it’s in novella form.

If you’re a fan of contemporary medical drama that keeps you riveted to the page and you haven’t read the Crisis Team series, I highly recommend it! It’s one of my all-time favorites. In fact, all of Calvert’s books are on my keeper shelf.

I received an advanced reader copy of the book from the publisher and author. I was under no obligation to write a positive review. No compensation has been received.

Maybe It’s You is book three in the Crisis Team series. It can be read as a stand alone novel if you haven’t read the earlier books. The only thing I feel that you will really lose in doing this, is understanding exactly how much Sloane has changed since the previous stories. It is a very drastic change. However, the author does a good job of catching the reader up if they don’t know the things that have happened in the past few years in Sloane’s life.

Sloane was definitely a character that I did not like in the previous books. It was eye opening to see what had occurred in her life to mold her into the person she was. It made her determination to change so much more meaningful and helped met to understand her better.

Micah was a great character. He was kind and honorable, yet struggled with an anger that he really never worked through from a past event. This anger and judgment did cause some problems in the story and it was quite a turning point for him when he realized that he needed to get over the things that were holding him down. I really enjoyed the development of Micah and Sloane’s relationship. It felt very realistic and natural.

The author did a very good job of creating troubling situations not only for the main characters, but also for a group of side characters. She kept me guessing about the way everything would work out and surprised me toward the end of the story with one reveal in particular!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to NetGalley and Tyndale for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the Crisis Team series. Ms. Calvert has written another great book that engages from the first page to the last page. Sloane Ferrell is an ER nurse at Hope Medical Center in LA who loves her job and is dedicated to her calling. She wants to keep to herself, unwilling to get too involved with others. This changes when she comes to the rescue of a girl who it appears is about to be kidnapped outside the hospital. Sloane and another nurse, Harper, are on their lunch break when the event happens. The hospital PR person, Micah Prescott and his friend, Coop, a reporter, also witness it. Micah is trying to come up with a campaign to change the hospital's negative reputation caused by actions of a past chief of staff. Micah's idea is find an employee whose actions that show a more positive dedication to their job. What Sloane did is a perfect example of what he wants to portray as the picture of Hope Hospital. When Micah approaches Sloane, she lets him know in no uncertain terms that she wants nothing to do with it.

Sloane has had a painful and abusive childhood that has damaged her self worth. Her father died before he and her mother had a chance to marry. Her mother drowned in a situation that Sloane blamed on her stepfather. He is in prison and up for parole but she intends to stop any chance of him being released by testifying to the prison board. Before Sloane moved to LA, she was engaged to someone associated with the Russian mafia. He owed them money and because of that, went to Mexico. Before moving to LA, Sloane was run off the road by someone hired by the mafia. Her car went over a cliff and she miraculously lived. Sloane's way of coping with all that was happening to her during her life led her to become an alcoholic. She is trying to straighten out her life by attending AA meetings. She has been sober since she moved to LA.

Micah is from a Christian background and his family has been involved in the Christian music industry. This stopped a few years ago when his cousin, who was also his best friend, was killed by a drunk driver. Her aunt and uncle moved away to Washington state afterwards and his parents shortly followed them. Micah has hopes that he can talk his family into writing a song for the winner of his marketing campaign that will represent a new image of Hope Hospital. Micah became involved with the Crisis Care Team in his time away from work. This is a ministry he is led to do and help make a situation a little better for families and victims of crime and tragedy.

In spite of their different backgrounds, Sloane and Micah become friends with the possibility of more but Sloane's ex fiance comes back into the picture and bad things start happening that brings Sloane's past out. The Russians are behind human trafficking and murders with some of the victims showing up at the Hope ER. Both Sloane and Micah have to face their past hurts and situations. Micah's resentment of drunks has him rethinking his relationship with Sloane and her lack of self worth and guilt over her past are both areas that they have to deal with.

Ms. Calvert does a great job of character development and making the settings seem real. Her books are action packed and suspenseful with real life people and situations. Grace is an important component of MAYBE IT'S YOU. We are all children loved by God and saved by His grace as is shown in how Sloane treats a homeless man and others. Alcoholism is hard on families and on the alcoholic but it happens to normal everyday people. My father was an alcoholic but was a loving father who provided for his family. He was sober for 31 years when he died. I appreciate what Ms. Calvert has done to show on a small scale what the disease does to people. This is a great suspenseful romance with a faith lesson of grace, love and forgiveness.

Was lucky enough to get a free copy of this book to read for possible endorsement which I happily gave.

Heroine Sloane Ferrell has not had the easiest life and is doing everything she can to hide from her past. When she rescues a young woman from an appearing domestic violence incident, Micah Prescott wants to use her and the story to improve the hospital's PR image.

And therein lies the conflict.

Sloane was actually a previous villain in Step by Step. It takes an uber talented author to then take that character and make her vulnerable and likable. Strong work, Candace, strong work.

Highly Recommended.

What would you do for a fresh start when you didn't think you deserved one? Maybe It's You is the heartbreaking and hopeful story of second (and third and fourth) chances, facing your past, grace and love. Maybe It's You has Candace Calvert's trademarks of romance, medical tension, drama, action, and heartwarming stories of the people who give of themselves to keep others safe.

Sloane is a character grounded in the reality of a broken world. Sloane has faced trauma from her childhood right up until her last post at San Diego Hope Hospital. We first met Sloane in Step By Step. Acerbic, alcoholic, with a shame-filled past that she wishes she could bury and yet to which she just keeps adding, Sloane pushes people as far away as she can get them. But in Step By Step a serious car crash leaves Sloane hospitalised and a colleague fighting for her life and Sloane decides to start turning her life around. But shaking her past won't be easy, especially when an ex-boyfriend with ties to the Russian mafia resurfaces and seems determined to involve Sloane.

At the start of Maybe Its You Sloane has moved away from San Diego to LA. She has changed her name and tried to cut all connections to her past. But a string of violent crimes and the hospital's own marketing campaign seem ready to out her hidden secrets. And the handsome marketing man, Micah isn't helping.

Micah and Sloane are set to clash right from the start. He is looking to find the face of LA Hope while she wants to stay safely hidden. He despises drunks after one killed his cousin, she is a recovering alcoholic. She lashes out at anyone who dares to get close, he knows there is more to her story. She hates condescending observers who have never experienced life's turmoil and he seems to fit that description exactly. But as tragedy keeps striking, Sloane discovers there is more to Micah than suit and polish, like volunteering for the crisis responders team and a history that has left him hurting.

Their romance starts off with an antagonistic confrontation, moves on through fear and threats to resigned tolerance and then friendship and only gets more complicated from there. A great love story that displays the value of compassion and understanding.

There is plenty of tension in this book, both in the medical setting and outside of it. Attempted kidnappings, shootings, mafia, sex trafficking, and all seemingly tied back to Sloane. Her journey includes discovering faith, relearning who God is and how He could love her, even when she doesn't think she is worth loving or forgiving. Micah, too, has his own trauma to work through.

Maybe It's You is a great addition to the Crisis Team series. I didn't love it as much as I did the previous two books, a bit too traumatic perhaps, but it still has that winning combination of action, drama and romance, all tied up with a heartwarming faith journey.

The publishers provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A medical drama that challenges and convicts.

Maybe It's You is the third book in the Crisis Team series. It reads like a standalone -- though if you have been keeping current you'll be all too familiar with Sloane. A prickly character with a gnarly reputation and a questionable past.

After finishing Step by Step (Book 2 in the series) did I really want to read an entire book dedicated to Sloane? Probably not if anyone but Candace Calvert was writing the story. But, thankfully, she is the author and she wooed me onto Team Sloane in pretty short order.

Yes this heroine is hot-headed and defensive and annoyingly aloof. But she's also an incredible nurse -- fiercely protective of her patients. Kind and compassionate, treating them all with equal respect. What a curious contrast between her personal life and professional one! And so much fodder for enthralling storytelling as Calvert slowly peels back the complicated layers that protect Sloane's fragile, broken heart.

By comparison, Micah seems to have it all together. Raised with the foundation of a strong Christian faith, he's working at a prestigious hospital marketing job while balancing volunteer hours as a crisis responder. But a past tragedy has chiseled some serious cracks in that solid foundation.

There are some interesting dynamics between this hero and heroine. Awkward. Fumbling. Hope thwarted by wariness. A tumultuous romance. The only way a relationship will ever work is if they are both brutally honest...but there's an equally good chance that will tear them apart instead. Talk about tension and emotional overload! I was in romance reading heaven!

Forgiveness and the true meaning of saving grace are at the heart of Sloane and Micah's journey. They have a lot to learn (as did this reader!) before faith can make them whole.

Delectable. Absorbing. Unforgettable. And a deliciously 'meaty' read -- 418 pages!

Are you looking for a book with believable characters, medical drama and suspense? Look no further~ "Maybe It's You," is a must read.

This is the third installment of the "Crisis Team" series. It can be read as a stand alone novel, but why do that, when there are two more available to read.

Sloan Ferrell, is a returning character and the protagonist of "Maybe it's You. ". She has changed her name, job and whereabouts, in hopes of hiding from her painful past.

Sloane trusts no one. Will she ever gain trust from, Micha Prescott, the hospitals marketing man? I will not give the suspenseful plot away, but I will tell you that the writing is superb. The author brings to us her expertise in the field of medicine. Keep your tissues handy because there are several things that will touch your heart. I also recommend reading this book on a full stomach. Some of the delicious meals her cast of characters are eating sound absolutely scrumptious. This doesn't surprise me as she loves to cook when not writing.

There are powerful messages of hope in this novel which the author has successfully passed on to her many fans.

I would like to take the time to thank the publishers for an ARC, in exchange for an unbiased opinion. Kudos once again, Candace Calvert, for a job well done.

"It's not like one random event can just pop things back into perfect alignment."

Emergency room nurse Sloane Ferrell's life has been careening off course for quite some time, her childhood stolen by someone she should have been able to trust, her mother's death the kind of memory that no child should have to recall, her personal life steeped in poor judgement; and now her privacy is about to be invaded after a hospital parking lot rescue? She has worked so hard to create a new life for herself in Los Angeles, and what others might deem heroic, now threatens to put her face on a billboard for Hope Hospital's new public relations campaign; that simply cannot happen.

Micah Prescott, assistant director of public relations and marketing at Hope Hospital, is intrigued by the lovely emergency room nurse with the fire in her eyes, relentless compassion for her patients, and firm resistance to his overtures of friendship. When a grisly crime draws the two together, Sloane reluctantly admits that her first impressions of Micah Prescott were perhaps a bit misguided. Just as the two begin to form a delicate friendship, the secrets in Sloane's past begin to unravel before Micah's very eyes, forcing him to admit that he has a lot to learn about forgiveness.

Once again, Candace Calvert has displayed her ability to use a story as an illustration of God's tender mercy and unfailing love, taking the most cruel of circumstances and interjecting the hope that "God never defines you by the past . . . . ".

This is my 3rd Candace Calvert novel and probably the most liked. If a reader is looking for a medical drama without the grittiness of the medical profession and is looking for a suspense without the edgy writing style, then Candace Calvert has the book for that reader.

Although not my style, the writing is concise and easy to read. Enough explanation is given to a reader who may not know medical jargon so that she can understand more in the story. Sloane and Micah are two well developed characters who bring the story to life.

The romance was sweet and not overly described in detail. When it came to the faith element it seemed more forced than natural. There were a few instances where an action or a reaction seemed too stilted or as if the author was trying not to offend a reader.

All in all, Candace Calvert delivered a good novel that many readers will enjoy.

*My Thoughts*

Candace Calvert's work is so different from any other contemporary fiction I've ever read. She has this amazing way of combining her life outside of her writing with this real, magical fiction world she created. The end result is medical fiction like you've never read before!

Maybe It's You is the third book in the Crisis Team series. Even though I highly recommend books one and two (they're awesome!), I think you could easily get away with this one as a stand alone.

Candace created such a strong character in Sloane Ferrel. She had such a tough shell, but she also had a sweet, trusting side to her that made her so tangible to me. Her determination to overcome her shameful past made the book not just fluff, but a deep inspiring read. Micah Prescott the handsome pr director was butting heads with Sloane from the beginning. Her judgemental attitude towards him gave them a rocky start, but their relationship steadily grew throughout the book. With every turn of the page, I was holding my breath to see what would happen next.

My conclusion? Candace has created yet another work of Medical drama art. From the strong characters to the riveting plot to the fascinating details, Maybe It's You truly is a winner.

Having read the first two books in Candace Calvert's first two books in the Crisis Team series, I really enjoyed them. Her stories always have characters that dig at my heart and make me want to keep turning the page. With her final book in the Crisis Team series, Maybe It's You, I felt the same way. I enjoyed the strong, yet flawed characters with a plot that kept me focused on the story.

Like the previous novels, Calvert uses her knowledge of the medical field to make her story shine. The inner workings of the medical hospital is proven with Calvert's incorporation into the story. While the medical research is important, Calvert also understands how to create an interesting, yet concise story where characters stay in their point of view and have me empathize with them.

Sloane Ferrell is a strong heroine who is an ER nurse. I enjoy stories where the past comes back to haunt the individual characters. It makes the story better. With Sloane, it is no exception. Sloane is a caring and loving nurse who tries to escape her past, but it catches up and interferes with her current movements. I really enjoyed spending time with her. I loved seeing her flawed and trying to put her life back together. As for Micah, he is a PR person who works with the crisis team on the side, so he wants to help others out in his spare time too, which makes him perfect for Sloane.
While the individual characters are well-written, the romance wasn't too cheesy or over the top. I really enjoyed watching the love story of Sloane and Micah slowly unfold. Their romance takes time to develop and moves at a nice pace. But one thing about their romance bothered me . . . It was the proposal at the end of the story. I understand completely that it is formulaic to throw the type of endings in a romance, but I really, really don't like those type of endings.

The plot centers around Sloane's past and a young women named Zoey who is wrapped up in human trafficking. The story gripped me pretty early on and kept my attention glued to the page. I liked being lost in a world where the innocent is downtrodden, but then strike to victory in the end. I loved when justice is served. Maybe It's You does exactly that.

Maybe It's You is a predictable and unoriginal novel. The story idea has been done a number of times, but I really enjoyed it. While the story keeps me glued to the page, Calvert gently reminds me that God loves you no matter what you have done in your past. Something all of us need to remember. Fans of Calvert's other stories and Beth K. Vogt's novels should pick this novel up. I highly recommend it.

In conclusion, Candace Calvert's Maybe It's You, is a gripping story with flawed, yet realistic characters and non-stop moving plot with a predictable element that kept me glued to the pages.

Calvert lifts villainous "Sloan" from the pages of Crisis Team #2 - Step by Step - and fleshes her out as the survivor of a terrible over-the-cliff car accident who is back at work in the ER of another hospital in a different city. Her life has changed for the better, but it is still flawed and she has multiple secrets which she strives to keep safely tucked away.

The story explodes into action with a near kidnapping in front of the hospital and Sloan runs to the rescue of the teen. While in the ER because she is slightly injured, the rescued teen has a disturbing tattoo "property of...." in a hidden area. As the story progresses, the frightening reality of girls held as sex trafficking merchandise and similarly tattooed comes to light along with brutal criminal activity toward these young girls and those who come into the cross hairs of the criminals.

Woven throughout is the thread of forgiving those who have harmed you and also in finding a way to forgive yourself. This forgiveness is found in the deep seated forgiveness of Christ and it is called Grace. Calvert nicely weaves this into the story.

The romantic interaction between Sloan and Micah, a Crisis Team Volunteer and ad man or PR man for the hospital, gets off to a slow start but they do discover their attraction to each other. This book seems to have a bit more romance than Calvert's previous books.

This is a good, clean read though some parents may want to screen it prior to giving it to a young teen given the subject of sex trafficking and sweet romance scenes (though definitely clean) are part of the story. Again, this is a clean read and definitely not offensive.

Maybe it’s You is a story that is about second chances. This story deals with some pretty tough issues like abuse, alcoholism, and trafficking and shows different types of bondage people are in whether it is physical, mental, or spiritual. I do have to say that Sloane Ferrell is one tough cookie. She has been through a lot in her life and has the scars, inward and outward to prove it. To play it safe and to keep safe, she has decided to do her best not to become attached to anyone and to close her heart off to the world. But Sloane has much too big of a heart to pull that off even if she doesn’t see it.

Enter Micah Prescott who notices Sloane in a big way with how she treats everyone. She reaches out even to the ones that no one else wants to care for, the dregs of humanity. Why? What makes her different? However, when unwanted attention brings Sloane and Micah together, sparks fly in both bad and good ways. Micah is trying to boost the hospital image in the community and Sloane is trying to stay under the radar from her past. Neither one is prepared for what unprecedented danger is already in their town and coming.

This book takes a closer look at what a Christian life should look like and the topic of do we love and forgive others like Christ does. This book is in no way preachy but interweaves a message of hope, forgiveness, and worthiness in its pages, even forgiveness for our own mistakes and regrets.

I have only read this book and the first book of the Crisis Team series but I have enjoyed them both very much. I like a medical drama that doesn’t shy away from the hospital procedures or ignore the very real problems going on in this world. And neither the intrigue, danger, nor the romance overwhelms the story but all work together to compliment and flesh out a truly wonderful series.

I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.

ER nurse Sloane Ferrell is trying to start over in a new place with a new job. But a smooth marketing man, Micah Prescott, seems determined to get under her skin and a reporter (Coop) trying to make a name for himself gets a little too close for comfort. Will Coop find out about Sloane’s past? What would Micah think of her if he knew the truth? Does all his talk of grace and forgiveness apply to her?

Sloane is beautiful, inside and out, but she doesn’t see it. She is so beaten and bruised from her past that she feels worthless at times. She’s trying to make a new start but it’s hard to believe that God would really want anything to do with the likes of her. Sloane embodies the truth that God uses the hard things in our lives so that we can comfort and help others in similar situations. She reaches out to the people other nurses don’t want to deal with and it’s so winsome. Some call her the “angel of the misunderstood and downtrodden.” She sees people as God sees them even though she can’t see herself in the same light. Sloane has been in other books by Calvert and it was nice to see some resolution for her.

This is the third book in the crisis team series and like the others, the detail and descriptions make you feel like you are right there. Calvert’s experience as an ER nurse really shows in her writing. Topics of alcoholism and sex trafficking are touched on in very appropriate ways….not minimizing the pain and hurt yet still showing there’s hope and a way forward. It’s a great read and was very hard to put down. Calvert is on my “Must-Read” list.

Thank you to Tyndale House and Netgalley for providing me with a free e-copy of this book for the purpose of this review. I was not required to make it positive. All opinions are my own. I’d highly recommend this book.

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!!! What an awesome story!!! I were given the book for a honest review by Tyndale House Publishers, during a time that we relocated from one town to another. So things were a bit crazy, and it was difficult to find time to read the book! But once I started I had to sneak a page (Or chapter!) here and there. Doing some unpacking, and then doing “some” reading! I was hooked!! So many people feel hopeles, feel snagged in hopelessness, and then this awesome reminder of God’s Grace!! Even when you don’t feel good enough, “God has your picture on His fridge”!! I want to share two life-changing quotes from Maybe it’s you with you: “So many people need that help, Sloane. They need to know they have value, that there’s hope no matter their pasts and current situation.”
“God never defines you by the past, but the enemy will try to confine you by it.”
Deep, deep revelation given to you in an awesomely written love inspired suspense!! Like me, you will cry with times, you will feel hopeful with times and then you will just rejoice in God’s grace and love for the characters!!
Expertly written! The plot is real and relevant! The characters are so believable, you’ll want to meet them in person!! The twists and turns in the plot will keep you reading on the edge of your seat to know more, even if you have to unpack!! I loved Maybe It’s You! Loved the romance, the suspense, loved the characters, loved the deeper message and absolutely loved the ending!!!

Once again, Candace Calvert has taken the medical world she lived in and brought it to life filled with realistic drama. This story contains every phase all readers of inspirational fiction look for – intriguing plot, well developed characters, romance, mystery, and realism.

Each one of her stories focuses on one of today’s social tragedies. This book portrays the disrespect and pain given to young girls through human trafficking as well as sexual abuse and the effects these bring into adulthood.

ER nurse Sloane Ferrell has had to continue changing her location, hospital of employment, and name to keep ahead of those who would want to harm her. She has learned to be very discreet in her conversations with fellow coworkers. Thus she has no close friends. When Micah Prescott, the hospital’s marketing man and volunteer crisis responder, sought Sloane out, she took offense. However, she soon saw his compassionate heart for wounded and hurting people and she was drawn to him. Would she allow herself to open up to this man? Were there too many obstacles to permit a relationship to unfold?

Reader, you will not be able to put this book down. Your feelings will go full-circle from sadness and anger to “what could possibly happen next” and then finally to joy as you see God’s working power in this beautiful, but aloof, lonely woman.

Calvert's third Crisis Team novel is definitely romantic, but also has elements of action and suspense as well. The medical and crisis team aspects take a bit of a backseat to Sloane's character growth and development, but this gives the book more depth because the dark parts of Sloane's personality were featured in the series' second installment. This novel shows the very realistic changes Sloane makes and the struggles she experiences integrating them into her life. Although this book is a stand-alone, it is better when read as a part of the series. Sloane's and Micah's faith journeys are also memorable and true to life.
Sloane Ferrell changed her name and moved to a different city to get a fresh start away from the bad influences and trauma of her past. Yet after she helps a young girl named Zoey, mysterious things begin to happen, and the people she thought she escaped seem to be back in her life again. Sloane is working through a 12-step program to help get her life in order after long struggles with alcoholism rooted in past abuse. She meets Micah Prescott, the hospital's new PR guru, and there is definitely attraction. As they grow closer, can they truly develop a relationship when Sloane is hiding so much about her past?

I've been excited for Sloane's story and was not disappointed. This is a story of redemptive grace. And forgiveness. Not the easy kind, but the kind that hurts to offer. Calvert handles the ER scene, as always, with realism. We have some suspense and danger thrown in and of course some romance. Also, major points for not employing the "kill-the-pet" plot that we so often see!
This was an awaited conclusion to her Crisis Team series, and readers of that series will be excited to get this installment. It is a stand alone, so its also a great introduction to Calvert.

Thanks to Netgalley and Tyndale Publishers for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Reading a Candace Calvert novel is like watching an episode of ER mixed with Law and Order, drama, action, suspense and even some love. I lost many hours of sleep reading this book, not that I'm complaining one bit! Sloane is a character that you will cheer for and hurt with as she deals with everything that is thrown at her, the story pulled me in from page 1, and held me captive until I turned the last page.

Highly recommended!

This is a well written book with wonderful believable characters. The setting is real, using the ER as a backdrop. I am an ER Nurse, so recognized the scenes as very real. The descriptions of trauma care were well documented. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read, including drama, romance, and a message of hope.

Thanks to the fact that I belong to the Tyndale Blog Network, I was recently able to receive Maybe It's You by Candace Calvert for  a book review. As most of you know, I often share my book review assignments with my mother, Gloria. Lucky for me, Maybe It's You was one of those books I knew Gloria would love, and I was right.

Here's Gloria's review:

"I certainly recommend reading this excellent and emotionally moving inspirational romance says Serena Chase, USA Today on the back of the cover of Maybe It’s You.  This book is the third book in the Crisis Team Series but can be read as a standalone.   I did not read the previous two books and I had never read any of Candace Calvert's other books.  Even though this is a Christian romance novel, this story is filled with medical jargon suspense, action, faith, forgiveness, and romance.  This book continues the story of ER Nurse Sloane Ferrell from the previous books where Sloane was an abused alcoholic and nearly died in a car accident.

As this story opens she has run from her questionable past in San Diego, changing her name, zip code, new living space and now a new job where she has been working for the past 3 months at the Los Angeles Hope Hospital.  Memories of her past are with her and they are heartbreaking and disturbing.  She is determined to become a new person, Anonymity is of utmost importance, avoiding developing friendships, avoiding alcohol and going to AA meetings, and avoiding anything that would draw attention to herself.

One day at work she rescues a young girl Zoey and meets Micah Prescott who is the PR person at Lost Angeles Hope Hospital as well as a member of the Crisis Team.  Micah’s cousin Stephen who he was close to was killed by a drunk driver and he holds a grudge toward all alcoholics and continues to struggle with his death.   Micah is working on a new way to improve the Hope hospital image and thinks that Sloan would be a good candidate for the “Face of Hope”.   She does not want her picture on a billboard and is determined to stay out of his project.

As Sloan and Micah start a new friendship they must go slow as they both have baggage that they are bringing into this relationship.  The story takes a dramatic turn  when brutal crimes, fires, human trafficking, Russian mafias, and Sloan’s conniving ex-boyfriend has tracked her down bringing danger with him and now Sloan’s past is being exposed.

This is an excellent book.  It keeps you guessing until the very end how everything would work out.  It is about second chances and is filled with God’s grace.  Candace Calvert has taken her characters from very dark places and brought them hope with the spiritual messages.

This is a powerful read that I would highly recommend."

.....and so, there it is people.  Gloria loved the book and highly recommends it!

What I liked: *Sigh* Candace Calvert writes such amazing medical dramas! She always manages to appropriately weave in her experience as a nurse, and she really knows her stuff. Maybe It's You was no exception. Even though many parts of this book referred to a sex trafficking (see Concerning Content), it was not described in an inappropriate way. Ms. Calvert was fairly conservative when she described this topic. The entire part of the book that discussed sex trafficking was really pretty vague. I was both excited and a little nervous to read about Sloane. Surprisingly, I enjoyed reading about her transformation as she found Christ. Many books that I have read in the Christian Fiction genre do not include a transformation of the character who has found Christ as the book progresses. It was great to see this aspect included Maybe It’s You. Anticipation of the many great plot twists had me turning the pages on my Kindle as fast as I could! Micah had a great personality, and of course I loved the cat!

What I didn't like: I was really hoping that two characters from her previous book, Taylor and Seth, would have made an appearance in this book. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't. Also, this book contained a fair amount of sensitive and concerning content (see below).

Concerning Content: Sloane was an alcoholic who had a rough past. She was engaged to marry a gambler, who eventually tried to put her in a ton of danger later down the road. A positive aspect of this book was that she worked hard to overcome her past and turn her life in a new direction. She came to accept Christ near the end of the book, which was a very heartwarming event. However, sex trafficking was a MAJOR component in the plotline of this book. I really sympathize with all people involved in this terrible practice, both in the book and in real life. As I said, Ms. Calvert was conservative in describing these topics. She did use the term "hook up" quite a bit, which didn’t sit right with me. While I don’t believe the author was intentionally trying to be inappropriate by using this word, it has such a negative connotation that I personally think it should be left out of Christian books. Also, the were several instances involving kissing towards the end of the book. Even though they weren’t described in detail, some parents may not appreciate this topic being found in a Christian book. Finally, there were a lot of accidents and nursing scenes that were pretty detailed, which may bother sensitive readers.

Conclusion and Personal Rating: My personal rating is 3/5 stars. I give this book a little bit of a lower rating due to the amount of concerning content found in it. I did enjoy. It was an entertaining and worthwhile read. It is a pretty emotional book that is likely best for ages 15 and up. The second book in this series, Step by Step, would definitely be a better read for sensitive girls.

Disclaimer- I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review.

Woman scarred by her past, by all of her faults and messes. How can she not see her hurt self in the "lowest" of people entering the hospital she works for? How can she not treat anyone as one of her own? Because they are of her own "tribe" - the outcasts, the misfits, the messed-up people. Compassion, you say? Hardly. She is as messed up as they are.
But Micah (and Sloane's colleagues and friends (if she would allow such relationships to form)) see her in the different light. Like a woman offering dignity and hope.
And she is that and more. But there are worlds of pain, fear and shame hidden in Sloane's heart. And maybe the time has come to deal with them.
And maybe not just for her.

What a novel! This is a rare gem of novel, treating the heroine with such love and empathy, that I can only wish for such a treatment in my less than spectacular (or all) days. This novel embraces its heroes completely, lovingly and understandingly, creating such a safe place for the wounded and wounding hearts (and we all are messed-up somehow), than one can look at the mirror and see not face of shame, sin, pain and fear, but a face of hope.
I rarely see that kind of empathy in Christian fiction (exceptions are Francine Rivers and Lisa Samson for me). Sinner mostly needs to righten themselves. But HOW? It is rarely easy to go on the redemptive path and keeping on that journey. And most of the sinners are that way because someone had sinned against them, too.
Take Sloane. Heaps of abuse, lack of parental care, the wrong men. No wonder she took on alcohol, that she hardened her heart, that she is cold and ironic. Yet - she cares for the abandoned kitties and young girls and there is this natural - yes, empathy - about the misfits like her. And this is more than the most people could do in her shoes.
And Micah is attracted. And he is successful in his courting. But to be healed, one must confront their demons. Sloane knows about hers. Micah also knows his, or he thinks so. And here comes one of the most beautiful motifs (of a bit hidden) - that he needs to confront his own heart to see his own world of hurt in the new, rescuing light.

Beautiful. Rich. Layered. Never a dull moment. Informative. Healing.

Maybe It’s You by Candace Calvert is the third book in the “Crisis Team” series published by Tyndale House, and it is the first book that I’ve read in this series. It worked well as a stand alone; I didn’t even realize that it was part of a series until I began writing this review. This is not my usual genre, with murder and suspense and medical drama, and it’s over 440 pages…but I found myself gripped to the story just the same (although I wouldn’t recommend reading while eating your lunch like I did, because there are several scenes that can make you lose your appetite).
Sloane Ferrel is on the run from many mistakes that are trying to catch up with her, both mistakes she’s made and mistakes from others in her past. She comes to work in the L.A. ER as a nurse with a new identity, where she just wants to blend in and escape her past. But that sounds easier than it is when Micah Prescott’s campaign to remake the face of the L.A. hospital involves putting the face of one employee on billboards around town.
Micah Prescott just wants to remake the reputations of both himself and L.A. Hope hospital, but is intrigued by the new nurse and curious as to why she is so private. Things escalate though when a mysterious young girl becomes a victim and then disappears out of the ER.
WOW, what a book! There was never a dull moment; it had so many twists and turns that every time I’d thought I’d figured something out, it would turn out to be a lie! The characters sucked me right in; I was cheering for them the whole way through. I would recommend this for lovers of suspense and medical drama, but be aware that there are some intense scenes.

Maybe Its You by Candace Calvert

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Story Notes

Candace Calvert's third installment of her Crisis Team series is a gritty, raw and real story that will take readers from the bottoms of despair to the heights of hope and everywhere in between.

Having recently finished Ms. Calvert's Grace Medical series I was very pleased to see that she has another series based in the field of medicine. Her second foray into this series, Step by Step, was an excellent read and I plan to purchase a copy for my shelves soon. I have really enjoyed reading of the volunteers that are involved with the "Crisis Team" responders and how they assist those who experience tragedy. It is a much needed service for so many and it was interesting to see how Ms. Calvert wove it so well into her stories. And with this latest "Crisis Team" story coming out recently I knew I had to share it with others in a review. Sloane "Ferrell" was a semi-main character in Step by Step but Maybe Its You gives readers the ins and outs of her story. Ms. Calvert gave Sloane a tough facade with a "marshmallow center" that will take determined friends and 'suitors' a while to chip away enough to see the real Sloane hidden beneath the layers of self preservation. Sloane has created her own version of Witness Protection for herself after a tragic accident left her and a fellow nurse fighting for their lives. And she's not about to let anyone take away the safety and comfort she has fought so hard for over the past few months. New to the Los Angeles Hope Hospital ER staff, Sloane just wants to be left alone to do her job, enjoy her new home and stay sober - with the help of AA meetings. When the hospital announces a new campaign to find a new "face" for LA Hope, Sloane knows she will have take care to keep herself off the nomination list. She loves her job but values her privacy more. But when the Marketing director, Micah Prescott, sees Sloane's compassionate nature in action, he will do all he can to convince her to become the new face of the hospital. Coming from a family of Christian music singers that experienced a great family tragedy, Micah is seeking to give back to others who are experiencing tragedy by serving on the Los Angeles crisis responders team in conjunction with his marketing work at the hospital. Having been on the receiving end of the comfort and help the Crisis Team provides, Micah hopes to bury his sorrows in his service work and maybe, find a new friend in Sloane. As Micah gets to know Sloane, he starts to feel an attraction for her he has never felt before - if only she would feel the same. It will take time and much conversation for both Micah and Sloane to open up to each other enough to built a precarious relationship. And that relationship will be tested in the most brutal ways when Sloane's past catches up with her in a terrifying and violent way. I'm always impressed when an author tells their character's story in such a way as to make them real and relatable. Its okay to read stories about those who seem to make only minor mistakes in life but I find it much more enjoyable to read stories that have characters I can relate to in some way. No one is perfect and although I may not have experienced all the problems or issues a certain characters has, I nearly always find myself identifying with them in their faith journey. And in this story I found myself mostly identifying with Micah, who had placed those who have trouble with drinking and drugs in a category of evil that he found impossible to forgive. I was convicted, yet again, of my tendency to judge those with more visible problems more harshly that I judge myself - forgetting that my "little white lie" is just as awful as getting drunk or doing drugs - they all cause destruction to relationships. Ms. Calvert had me racing through the pages of this story to find out just how she was going to bring Sloane to her realization of her need for Christ, and Micah to his need to let go of his grudge and forgive. And I found her final chapters and ending to be one of the best I've read - finishing out the story of the characters involved while leaving room to continue the series. Maybe Its You is a story I won't soon forget and will probably re-read multiple times. I will most certainly pass it on to my friends and family.

I was provided both the E-book via Netgalley and the printed book from Tyndale House Publishers due to doubled request. Both were provided to me free of charge in exchange for a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation from either company for this review

"Maybe It's You" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. It's the third book in a series. It has different main characters than the previous books, but Sloane is a character in those books so this one is more enjoyable if you've at least read the previous novel.

Sloane is running from her past bad decisions and abuse. She's fighting alcoholism and hiding from organized crime bosses that are after her ex-boyfriend. Because of her past, she shows great compassion toward down-and-out people that others would dismiss as worthless, and this catches Micah's interest. He finds fulfillment in his crisis team work, but he holds a grudge toward all alcoholics after losing a close relative to drunk driving. Sloane not only has to deal with an ex-boyfriend determined to drag her back into her old life but wondering if Micah will reject her if he learns about her past.

The characters were likable, well-developed, and had interesting challenges to deal with. The suspense came from the ongoing danger for several characters. The characters dealt with accepting God's grace and forgiving others. There was no bad language. There was a scene where the intense kissing went a little far, but there was no sex. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable novel.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
