If you got here, and you haven´t read this manga, then STOP RIGHT THERE.
If you like the romance where girl and boy love each other and do everything to make the other happy, altough sometimes they act like fools, then go and read something else. THIS is not for you.
But, if you like idiot girls in love with boys that treat them awful and don´t deserves them, then keep going and cry a river with this.
Now, the review:
DIE YOU SON-OF-A-B**CH!!! Argh!!! I´m sorry for the flame, but this guy is the worst. The thing with the story is that it´s okay. It´s real and I can feel the same that the girl. I think that almost everyone can, because in one moment of our lives we have been just like that. In love and blind because of other boy/girl.
How I said, it´s great, but I can´t barely stand it!!! Seeing how this boy treats that girl... and that she is still with him!!! Girl, there are a lot of boys in the world, better than him. Love is an alecction. Really. Anyone can say, "On the heart no-one commands" but that is a lie. You don´t choose who yoy love, but you choose THE WAY that the love goes. How to love and be loved. Good or bad, faithfull or jeaously, it´s our choice. And it´s that girl choice to suffer. To be in love with a boy that doesn´t appreciate her and her heart and feelings.
I´m so annoyed for this, and i´m sorry if someone is offended but this is my very sincere opinnion.
My english is terrible, but it´s okay, I´m practicing.

This is a big "no" for me. I am very picky about romance in my shoujo, I know that. But I think it should be a general rule of thumb that, when a guy casually tells you that he would kill any girlfriend of his that cheated on him, and then grabs you by the throat to prove his point, you should run. Run like the wind. Yano, the apparent love interest, was so disturbing to me that I had to force myself to finish this volume. No more.

This is one hell of a no from me. The guy she's supposedly in love with, even though she's only said 5 sentences to him, is a complete jerk. He's manipulative, rude, and at one point grabbed her by the throat? Get the hell out of there, girl.

We Were There by Yuki Obata was my first shojo manga, and I have to say I enjoyed it very much. I’ve read a couple of graphic novels before, but this was a different experience as the reading flow is a bit more unique because it keeps with the original Japanese format.
I was impressed with the art work that complimented the engaging storyline. I will admit that I made a few mistakes with the reading flow and had to go back for a redo for a page here and there, but it was still a quick read that gave me a great introduction into manga. Not as intimidating as I thought.
This story is about a girl’s first experience with love as she begins to have feelings for the most popular, carefree boy in the class. Nanami opens up possibly too soon as she expresses her feelings to Yani, but he harbors secrets and a heartbreak that he isn’t quite ready to share.

I still don't know why I started this book. I didn't want to read it after seeing some comments on the anime. It was supposed to be a sad one and I normally stay away from sad manga and anime.
Th drawings are acceptable. Not my style though. But the story is interesting.

The anime was not satisfying enough, the manga was, especially after the timeskip that they entered. This is definetely one of my favourite manga of all time and worth the read and time.

This review is for the entire series, which I binged from start to finish over the last 2 days.
I wasn't the biggest fan. I remember watching the anime when it first came out way back when and really liking it even though it was bittersweet, but I was frustrated so many times reading this manga. I did not like Yano from the start; he made fun of Nanami and was downright mean to her so many times, yet she kept on forgiving him after seeing his smile. This boy was also obsessed with sex; it was kind of annoying how he kept on suggesting it to her or bringing it up. Even right after he moved to Tokyo and was firm in his love for Nana, an accidental glimpse of his classmate's boobs had him wavering. Sigh...
And don't get me started on his downward spiral after he moved to Tokyo. Yes I understand he was in a very stressful situation between his mom's health, the upcoming college exams, and his part-time job, but that's no reason to stop communicating with your own girlfriend! It's difficult times like those where you need others' support, and it frustrates me to no end that he cut off all ties with his former life except for Yamamoto, of all people. I can't express how shocked I was when we learned about how she dropped everything in her life (school, promising career, family) just to be with Yano, who doesn't even love her.
I was hopeful that after the 5 year time jump, things would be more positive, but I didn't like the second half of the manga at all. Nanami agrees half-heartedly to a relationship with Takeuchi and treats him like trash after he was there for her time and time again when Yano wasn't. Despite all that, she doesn't say yes to his proposal, because some part of her is still hung up on Yano and why he dumped her without saying a word. And then there's Yano, who has given Nanami up to Takeuchi for some reason I still don't understand. He claims it is because she is too strong and independent, and he wants someone who can depend on him like Yamamoto does, but that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Honestly the whole MVP of the manga was Takeuchi. He was always there for Yano when he needed a friend to goof around with or talk relationships with, and for Nanami when Yano wasn't there or made her cry. Neither of them deserve him, honestly, and I wish he had gotten a better ending than simply as the unrequited side character / best friend.
This was a frustrating series to read. Yes there were some cute moments when Yano and Nanami dated in high school, but there were also many annoying moments as well, especially in the second half. I was super mad when it's revealed that Yano is living with Yamamoto in Tokyo. The scene where he opens the door and says 'Tadaima' to her had me absolutely livid. Their relationship at that point was still not fully explained; they weren't dating and I assume not sleeping together either, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

I read this series because I'd been recommended it so often, and also because I own the series, and I owe it to my money to read the manga I buy.
Unfortunately it's not the series I had hoped it could be. Every time you were left with a hanging question about where the story would go, I predicted the outcome. It was NEVER the outcome I'd hoped for. The outcome was always convenient. Always expected. And never profound.
The characters are weak. I think this is the overall problem I have with the series. Not weak in character, but just weak characters. They weren't developed enough -- and their relationship wasn't believable enough for me to buy into it. Actually I was thinking their relationship was more toxic than romantic, there were moments where I thought the author was aware of it too -- but if she was, she certainly didn't do anything about it!
The story itself is fine, if a little slow and predictable. The art in it is suitable (if occasionally inconsistent).
There was a surprise thrown into this series that made the beginning worth reading. It comes at the middle of the series, around volume 11. High school is over. Yano is gone. And, Nanami hasn't seen him in 5 years.
It's from this point onward that the series gets interesting. And it's at this point onward that you get SOME of the much desired character development. I'm not going to say it's a lot -- and I'm not going to say it isn't completely predictable, but I will say that you do start to have some feelings for Yano and Nanami as characters.
Unfortunately these feelings didn't come soon enough. I'm a person who is normally easily moved. I felt stone cold-hearted reading to the end.
But, do I recommend this series?!

Maybe. I would say try the series. If you don't buy into the characters relationship right at the beginning it's probably not worth reading until the end. But, if you completely get behind Yano and Nanami's relationship (if their love moves you), this will probably be one of the best shoujo dramas you'll ever read!

We Were There is about Nanami, a first year high schooler, who develops a crush on a seemingly carefree boy in her class. Her feelings are conflicted and confused as she starts to find out more about the boy, and the happens of his mysterious past.
Opinion:
I bought We Were There on a whim because the art on the cover looked interesting and the title seemed like it would make a good story-- I honestly didn't know what to expect! The novel ended up being a pleasant surprise though and I honestly can't wait to go out and buy the next volume. This book definitely made me love Japanese schools even more than I already do (if that's possible).
I recommend this book specifically to teenage girls because, besides the fact that it was written for that age group, I feel like many girls can relate.

February 28, 2011I love this anime, it's very realistic and it also talks about very sensitive issue about love, relationships and premarital sex. Romantic and emotional, and definitely at the beginning it's full of twists and turns that it might confuse you at first but that makes it more compelling. I have not read the manga entirely but only the latter volumes.

I read this manga after a long time. When I read this first is in elementary school. It was difficult for me when I read in that time but now I can understand the story well. It include many sub-plots and detailed psychological descriptions. The story write the youth of teenager to conflict with their surrounding environment and fate.

Kinda disappointed especially with how well this has been received. I was hoping for something more like Orange, ie insightful slice-of-life with perhaps a scifi/fantasy twist. This ain't it, chief.
Nana is bland and Yano is an asshole. I get he has baggage, and honestly, I relate hard to his baggage, but he is too much of a dick for me to care. For me, if a character is unlikable they have to be very motivated to be compelling but he is not. Everyone is just sorta there.

This review is for the anime...Apparently the way the anime and the manga ends are different--but this review is for the anime...
I can't describe Bokura Ga Ita. I've only watched the anime, but still....
Anyway, I just finished the anime within the hour that I'm typing this review. I can't describe the way this story made me feel.
This was officially the first ever series capable of making me cry. And even though I'm super childish and emotional and overreactive, I don't cry much over books and movies and anything super emotional.
And after I finished the anime, I just sat in place and kept thinking about it, even though the credits had already ended and there were no episodes left to watch.
Bokura Ga Ita is an emotional love story that WILL tug on your heartstrings! JUST. LIKE. IT. DID. TO. ME!!!!!!!!
The author knows what true love is. Every romantic scene in this series was beautiful and it made me squeal about every 15 seconds.
I am not spoiling ANYTHING in this review. You, my dear review reader, ARE GOING TO WATCH THIS ANIME AND FEEL ITS WRATH!!!!!

I wouldn't be aware if I squashed any innocent fellow passengers along the way, or if what I did next was a total waste of energy.
If I'm in a train and it starts to move, and the person I love is standing on the other side of the door, I will run down the corridor in the opposite direction.
And if it were the absolute opposite situation where I was the one standing outside of the train and the person I love is inside, then once I see that train move, I WILL run after it.
And in both situations, I will cry as much as Yano and Takahashi did.
However, I AM FULLY AWARE THAT THE MANGA HAS A DIFFERENT ENDING THAN THE ANIME. So this review is purely for the anime--I still have yet to read the manga.

FINALLY unpacked this from the boxes and boxes of books I have stashed away and collected all of the volumes I was missing. Dove right in and my heart is breaking yet swollen with warmth and love. This storyline is a sucker punch to the soul. The characters have weird and unhealthy relationships, but it feels so real for their age and personal backgrounds that I relate on a soul level. Can't put this series down.

We Were Trash
What a garbage hero. And what an idiot heroine to fall for him before he does anything worthwhile. Yano is a lazy blackmailing jerk who somehow charms nearly everyone he meets. Including the stupid heroine Nanami, who sees him as a jerk at first and yet inexplicably falls for him.
Whyyyyyyyyy?
I rarely get the urge to give up on a volume of manga, as they're quick reads, but this one I nearly quit multiple times, and it was a waste of my time to finish.
Do not recommend. A jerk and an idiot, neither of which have the courtesy to be funny, make for a frustrating read.

The description of this manga made it seem so sweet. I imagined that the manga would cover tough subjects but really pull at my heart similar to A Silent Voice did. Unfortunately this first volume was none of these things. The main female lead has a horrible case of insta-love for no reason and the male lead is manipulative and abusive to a girl he knows has a crush on him. He might be redeemed later in the series but I just can’t read anymore to find out. I honestly don’t have an issue with unlikable characters but this male lead definitely looks like he’s going to cross the line way way too far in the future for my taste.

idk what i was expecting when i picked this up, but i actually really liked it. i kind of like takahashi & yano’s dynamic they show they care for each other, but they don’t really say they do, if anything takahashi says the opposite when she tells yano to drop dead. their dynamic is like fire & ice & i honestly really like it. at some points i was just confused about who was speaking but it wasn’t too big of a deal because i eventually figured it out.
anyways i’m definitely going to continue the series & i’ll eventually watch the anime too!!

Uno. Adoro este manga hasta cierto punto porque la música de su anime es super linda, habla de cosas que otros mangas no lo hacen y sí, tiene varios temas que van para más la categoría de josei.
Dos. POR QUÉ NADIE ME AVISÓ DE ESTO ANTES DE QUE LO EMPEZARA A LEER. Me terminó por destrozar el corazón cuando lo leí, así que si desean sufrir de una forma nada bonita pueden leer este manga, si no pueden optar mejor por otro.

Not for those who has 'faint heart'. I mean this manga got suicide in it, sex in such young age, cheating, etc. For me, I may become annoyed with some of the characters, but come to think of it, it's reality. Nothing goes sweet all the time. Human sometimes makes bad choices. That's what the mangaka wants to emphasize in this.
Overall it's a great manga.

It's rare that I don't like a sappy shoujo manga. This is one of those occasions. I found both central characters uninteresting and not worth following. So glad that I just got this book from the library.

Um how about no...this was just plain awful... I normally don't read sappy love stories I'm lying, I do but this one I can't condone because this girl doesn't understand how much of a psycho this guy is and the plot is just slow and obvious.
