Wyvern

Rate this book
Elsbeth Weaver, a talented fiddler, gave up the man she loved to care for her ailing grandfather. Now, eight years later, she must risk her life to save her grandfather from a lynching, by playing for the wyvern that has terrorized her village throughout the summer. When she comes face-to-face with the beast at the haunted cliffs of Maldoza, she is both terrified and fascinated. Something about the creature reminds her of her long-lost lover, something more than just a shared name.

Alaric has never forgotten nor stopped loving the human woman he left in a dusty village almost a decade earlier. So when he meets her again on the cliffs, wearing old dragon armor and playing her fiddle as if her heart would break, he is overjoyed.

But Elsbeth never knew the man to whom she had given herself was only an illusion for the wyvern. Alaric must convince her that the heart of the beast is no less devoted than the heart of the man, and that leaving her a second time will not last another decade.

Note: Some scenes contain graphic descriptions of physical intimacy.

I'm an author and Louisiana native living in Texas with my husband, three smalls and a big doofus dog. I have lived in Spain, hiked the Teton Mountains, honeymooned in Scotland, ridden in competition rodeo and am the great great granddaughter of a Nicaraguan president. I also hate doing laundry and refuse to iron anything.

I've loved storytelling since forever. I published my first short story with Amber Quill Press and have since written several other tales. A love of the bad boy in fiction always inspires me.

What would you get if you remove war, gore, rape, murder, incest and politics from Game of Thrones?
In the words my literary-sister Anya - "dragon porn, basically". A very well-written dragon porn.

Grace Draven uses her words well. Highly recommended if you want to read something romantic and short but still don't want to compromise on quality because let's face it, romance sucks as a book genre. Not as a literary tool but as a fucking GENRE.

This is actually 3.5 stars, but as a rule, I round down to 3 stars.

Wyvern is a pretty solid story by Ms. Grace Draven. I got hooked with her unique style when I read Entreat Me, and I started this book knowing what to expect from her.

And I was not disappointed. Her ever-present wit is there, gracing almost every dialogue between Alaric and Beth. The dark sensuality that characterises her stories can also be felt, though it's not as potent as in her other book. But the best thing about Ms. Draven's works (Wyvern included) would probably be the genuine connection between her leads. I cannot even begin to tell you how rare this is in romance novels. You get to see the characters as friends first and above anything else; their friendship actually takes precedence over romantic love.
description

I find that truly refreshing. And that's why I simply can't get enough of her stories.

While I enjoyed this book a lot, I still couldn't give it 4 stars because of one minor flaw. It lacked the depth that I expected from the writer; the overall execution seemed a trifle too simplistic for me. I mean, the world she created has so much untapped potential and it somewhat frustrated me that she stopped short of exploring it. Nevertheless, this is going to the records as one of the most enjoyable reads I've had this month. I am definitely recommending it to you guys.

This was okay, bordering on good, but despite some of the unique elements to the fantasy it felt.. kinda pedestrian. Definitely not like the intricate, clever, breathtaking, refreshing, fantastical, love stories I've come to expect from this author. But it was a quick read and I'm tempted to round up because it's Draven but alas.. nope. If you're a fan I would recommend you give this a pass but, again, it's short so there's no real commitment required in order to see if it works for you.

Second chance romance between a village musician h and dragon H.
Novella length and well written but I hated that h was celibate in the 8 yr separation period while H mated with other female dragons and even had a baby.

Not this double standard again:(

Happily ever afters are only in fairy tales

This short novella by Grace Draven has the aura of a traditional fairy tale, where burdensome responsibility and unfortunate choices mold the lives of the characters. At times we forget these tales don't always end with Disney-induced euphoria. In this vein, the well-written Wyvern is the tale of star-crossed lovers who find a gentle acceptance in the happy moments as their lives intersect. I have to admit I missed the euphoria.

Well I rated this 4 Stars back in 2011 and reread the 2016 re-edited version and while there are some minor changes it was still a wonderful story. Hard not to enjoy a good story like this where the heroine is caring for her sick Grandfather and the powerful dragon/wyvern that falls in love with her. This is not a long story so I can't mention a lot of details but this could easily have been just as enjoyable (or more?) as a longer book.

Bottom line: Highly recommended and a story you will love, trust me :)

I cannot get enough of Grace Draven's writing. She has a way of drawing you in and hooking you so that you don't want to put down the book. This is about dragon shifters and it is done so beautifully that you don't realize it's a novella until it's over. Her characters have beautiful spirits and the story has irony and longing. It will capture your attention and your heart.

Wyvern is one of Grace Draven's earlier works and it's obvious. Maybe not to those who haven't read Ms Draven before, but for those of us who have, it's pretty obvious. It's not in the writing - which is rather smooth as is normal - but it is in the...tone of the tale itself.

I want to start this review with an admission: I own waaay more Grace Draven than I've read. A lot more, to be honest. I've only actually read three of her works to completion. But though my experience is a little limited, I can say that Ms Draven currently enjoys deploying a darker atmosphere than found in Wyvern.

Wyvern is different for the typical shifter book we get now. Firstly, it's a Wyvern and not a Dragon. The wyvern - Alaric - can shift into a human but he is not a human, he is a wyvern. Currently most of our shifters are equally man and beast - with authors making their nature more human than animal even though they have a duel nature. The wyvern in this story is not a human or a wyvern/human shifter hybrid - he uses magic to allow him to take the form of a human for limited amounts of time. Very cool and different.

Wyvern is the story of Elsbeth and Alaric. Elsbeth is a weaver and fiddler in a small village. She lives alone with her ailing grandfather - who she gave up a great love in order to care for. When Wyvern opens, Elsbeth is facing down a mob who wants to lynch her grandfather. A dragon has been plaguing the village - killing livestock and any foolhardy enough to challenge it. The mob has convinced themselves that Elsbeth's grandfather is to blame because he once killed a dragon. Elsbeth later finds out that the "dragon" is a wyvern and that it can talk. Elsbeth makes a deal with the wyvern to stop the raids on the village that includes her staying with the wyvern for two weeks, entertaining him with her conversation and her fiddle. Close to the end of the two weeks, Elsbeth learns the wyvern is her long lost beloved, Alaric. More Things happen, HEA achieved.

So. I enjoyed Wyvern for the most part. It's rather light though there are hints of the darker atmosphere that will crop up later in Draven's work. You can see the hints in the plot of the story itself as well as in small things like the background of Elsbeth's village Elder.

Honestly, the only reason this only gets 3 stars is related to the fact that I've come to expect something a little different from Ms Draven and I'm comparing her with herself versus other authors/books. Wyvern is cute but not especially deep.

This is one of the few published novella written by the very talented Grace Draven. I am loving this author. I discovered her when I took a chance and read Master of Crows a few weeks ago. This is a short sweet fairytale-ish novella which offers an impressive level of detail and character development.

This is the love story of Elsbeth and Alaric. She is a fiddler in a small village being attacked by a dragon. The people in the village want to feed her dying grandfather to the dragon thinking it will fix the problem. Her grandfather had once slew a dragon and made armor out of the skin. The villagers believe the dragon wants revenge. Elsbeth decides to go to the dragon's lair and strike a bargin to get him to leave her people in peace and spare her grandfather. She carries with her a fiddle and sweet memories of her one true love, Alaric. He was a traveling bard that stole her heart eight years earlier.

If you like dragons, this book will have you sighing. It's just delicious. Unfortunately, the book is not sold as a stand alone but is part of a collection of stories. So far, all of them are impressive. The stories are described as erotic but they are not by my opinion. There is some heat but not anywhere near erotica.

I believe the stories will be available in ebook soon and will be worth the wait as the paperback is expensive.

Wyvern is a short novella that takes place in a fantasy world. Elsbeth Weaver is a very talented fiddler, who has been tasked by the village to tame the wyvern that is close to said village. But something about the wyvern reminds her of the long-lost love of her life that disappeared 8 years ago. She wonders whether the man she has carried a torch for years can be the same being as this creature.

This was such a magical novella!! I just adore Grace Draven's writing style and the worlds she creates! I really loved this second chance romance, and honestly wish that this was a full-length book! I think it would be amazing if she continued with this couple or added more to this world in another book!

Ms Draven weaves magic in her fantasy. There's no flaws, no bumps in the road, no misgivings in her writing. And her HEAs are always perfect, as they never go the step beyond. There's no happily forever after, but simply ever as in a human, normal, fairy tale way. You may love an Other, but never become one.
You'll never be bound for eternity by magic(at first sight), but by love only (and after a while). You'll die and the Other is going to suffer. Human perfect.

Faultless. It was such a gorgeous novella, peeps! Reminded me of Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Very simple style of telling the tale and a very familiar fairy tale plot. I enjoyed the vibrancy of the story, the characters who despite having very little screen time, managed to shine through. Elsbeth herself, of course, Alaric, Irene and even ever so villainous Malcolm. The fiddle and the weaving themselves just added a vital part to the story. I wish it was a full blown novel, because MUSIC! and WYVERN! but as a novella this is an extremely good read. Recommended.

Another magical story by Grace Draven. I'd just read Entreat Me (my 1st G.Draven book) & found this one in my TBR list. It's just as wonderful. Short but very good & yes, it made me cry too. Her stories do that.

Elsbeth is a weaver who is also a very talented fiddler, living with her grandfather. 8 years ago, a travelling bard, Alaric visited her village & they fell deeply in love but he couldn't stay & Elsbeth (Beth to Alaric - I loved that he & only he called her Beth. His Beth) couldn't leave her grandfather.

Since then Elsbeth & her grandfather have moved & the village they live in now has had they livestock preyed on by a dragon (or so they think). When the villagers turn on Elsbeth ailing grandfather who once slew a dragon as the cause the dragon in terrorizing them (ie for revenge), Elsbeth on the advice of the wise, sympathetic elder of the village seeks out the dragon to parley with it.

I'm sure you can guess what happens thereafter. The romance is beautiful.

I fell in love with Grace Draven by chance. I think it was an e-mail I received highlighting Master of Crows, through that book I fell in love with her and her storytelling. Since then I've read nearly everything she's written.

This particular short story is about a village being targeted by a dragon, he's disgruntled and is taking it out on the farms by way of devouring their livestock and burning the crops. Drastic measures must be taken and it is decided that Elsbeth Weaver, a talented fiddler who is taking care of her ill grandfather, must go to entertain the beast.

Aside from her grandfather, there is not much else cementing her to home, eight years prior a Bard had been passing through, a man she hardly knew but gave her heart to. So, she lies to her grandfather to put him at ease and instead decides to go to the beast, what she wasn't expecting was how familiar the beast was. He in fact shared the same name as her prior lover, Alaric, and come to find out he is not a dragon at all, but a Wyvern and he's soon explaining the differences.

There were some aspects that almost had a Beauty & The Beast touch to it which made me smile. It was lovely, quick and descriptive in a way that is familiar to me.

I wish it was longer, I think that's my only complaint... Alaric was lovely, so was Elsbeth.

Does anyone else see Jesus when they look at this cover? No? Carry on then.

Wyvern is re-release of an early book by the talented Ms. Draven. I believe it has been expanded, re-edited and has a new cover. I hadn’t read it previously, so of course, I jumped at the chance to get my Draven fix while I wait for the release of the next Wraith Kings book.

Elsbeth is a talented weaver and fiddle player and the only resident of a small village willing to face the wrath of a dragon. So she journeys toward danger, not realizing that the dragon she is hoping to negotiate with is also the man who left her behind years before.

This novella is just what I needed to refill my fantasy cup. Strong, likable heroine who has a palpable connection with her wyvern lover and a nicely done HEA. And really, what more can you ask for? Final Grade-B-

Beautiful and Bittersweet 4.25

This novella by Draven, a story between a fiddler and a dragon is bewitching and at times heartbreaking. As with all of Draven books I was drawn immediately into the story of the fiddler, the granddaughter of dragon slayer and the 'dragon' she goes to bargain with for her villages safety.
The romance is both sweet, and fiery in it's intimate nature and for any fan of Draven or dragon books this book is not to be missed.

The heroine Elsbeth was sweet and brave, and so was the hero Alaric. I love their interactions with each other and with others, as they took their responsibilities and their magical connection seriously...
Speaking of connection, these two took love-making to a scorching level. And, if any two people deserved to be happy and in love, it was 'Beth' and Alaric.
Another wonderful fantastical tale from the pen of Grace Draven!

3.5 stars. Grace Draven writes beautifully in any format, but some of the short stories leave me unsatisfied in terms of conclusions and world-building. This is my first foray into what I now recognize as the dragon porn genre. I tried to explain that to a friend, and needless to say, she didn’t get it. It was a successful novella but I expect so much from Draven that I came away disappointed.

DNF at like 80%. I keep trying to read Grace draven books cos she does a bunch of non human romance which is my jam but holy SHIT if I don't hate how she writes romance. It's cloggy, trite drivvel with a bunch of doe eyed hucks having polite missionary sex for however many pages are in the book and constantly complimenting each other with no personality to back it up. I hate it. It's like a Hallmark card in "erotic" novel format.
I desperately need to stop reading her books because they legitimately make me want to vomit.
5/5 on my sexiness scale which isn't a good thing.

I'd never read this story before!

I enjoyed it.
Not as much as the other Draven stories but I mean - those are stellar [MARTISE AND SILHARA! ILDIKO AND BRISHEN!!!!]

Anyway. Eslbeth and Alaric <3

I wish there had been more of Beth and Alaric actually, because there was a LOOOT of "terrible townspeople" it seemed. Bler.

It's very sweet though and the waiting and the intensity <3

I want more adult high fantasy romances.

Cute story. Possibly a little underdeveloped, character-wise. I wish the hatchling had stuck around longer (convenient that it immediately gets shipped off to mom. What would happen if it was a male?) and I wish the human baddie had been a little less cartoonish. Nonetheless, the writing was engaging and the characters had that wry flavor that Ms. Draven so loves to impart. I feel sorry for Alaric for having to miss Elsbeth for the rest of his, uh, very long life, but I suppose most people would find it "romantic."
