The Fever burned hot and bright across a world unprepared for the devastation the virus would bring. Silence dominated the shattered wasteland left behind. Cell phones no longer worked. Static hissed from the old radio. No ships sailed through the nearby inlet. No airliners carved white trails across the sky overhead.
Stranded on a lonely barrier island, William Hill struggled to make it through a brutal winter. The days of easy food from the ocean vanished when the cold set in. Day by day, week by week, he watched those around him grow weaker and thinner.
The sense of isolation grew until it felt like the world had died and left the little band of castaways as the only living souls to bear witness to its passing. Even the island seemed empty and barren.
The fish had disappeared, along with the ducks, and even the shorebirds. Everything had fled.
I loved the book !! I could definitely feel ( in the writing) where M. Stark was having some troubled times that involved his brother. In the beginning of the book .. first few chapters, ( could have just been me) but I felt the writing moved slow, but once past that the storyline most definitely picked up and I had a very hard time putting the book down ...I didn't even want to fall asleep ( sleep won though) lol I CANNOT WAIT for book 7 to come out !!
Very long winded, far too descriptive and boring in places. For example, when he had to move the boat. This section could be greatly condensed. Felt very let down. By this as I loved The Island.
Not the best, but apparently he had gone through some very tough times while attempting to write this. It definitely has its moment, but pales in comparison to the previous books in this series.
Finally we make it back to the mainland only to find more problems. The horror and the monsters increase with the turn of each page. Wow, can't wait for the next installment!
So here's the thing... my Smashwords copy ended at 69% after The Hunter and the Hound. I hope that was the end because it started over at the note to readers( good thing I read the Island first) and then on to Security Breach, an earlier chapter. The novel was definitely slower then The Island and the real action didn't happen to much later. Most of The Rock felt like an introduction to something bigger, like the first book of The Island before it was released as a whole. Although I didn't like The Rock as much, it looks like the continuation is shaping up to be a great one like the others. : )
I have been waiting for this release so I can find out what happened to the group on the island. I could not put this down. I read it straight through and was not disappointed until it ended too soon. I wanted it to keep going. The author just kept it so interesting and the surprises kept coming. At one point I was cheering, Yeah I'm glad the monsters ate those two, they were mean.
Then it was over. The story ended leaving me wondering. I think I want to go back and reread the entire series again. Stark is a talented author.
This book starts off really slow. He spends way to much time in the beginning rehashing the conditions the survivors are living in. Once he moves on from that point it gets pretty good though and moves very rapidly.
