Best of the series but still needs some edits
This is the fifth and final story in the Barone Crime Family series. I DO NOT consider this to be a STAND-ALONE read. There are multiple reoccurring characters, consecutive timelines, and overarching themes. If not read in order, there are details that occurred previously that would be lost, as they cannot be adequately explained within another story.
— If you have not read any of the stories in this series, the following may contain spoilers, but hopefully only enough to adequately explain my opinions, questions, etc. about the story. —
— This is a dark-themed mafia series with all the violence you would expect from the genre. It is for adults only (18+ years old) and NSFW. I included a high-level list of potential trigger topics for the SERIES below. —
This is a fast paced read, despite the length. I ❤️❤️❤️ that more detail is given about the Spiders and we learn so much more about Louisa, but I still need more details on the characters, as well as their backgrounds.
This story also has a great sense of humor, which I ❤️❤️❤️, not only in this one, but the series as well. I think this is an obvious strength for B.B. Hamel. Returns back to the same style as earlier stories in the series with consensual degradation and praise during the intimate scenes, but without the aftercare, which is critical in this type of relationship dynamic.
There are a few areas that I kept hoping would be revealed before the end, but they never were. Imo this is the type of information that would elevate the story and fill in some of the background gaps for me. This includes the items notes on my previous reviews of this series and adds a couple more such as (potential spoilers ahead …):
— LOUISA:
=== Basic info such as age.
===Besides the misogynistic history between Louisa and Arturo, her father, why did she hate him so much?
=== Since she doesn’t have the skills to do it herself, who originally trained Louisa’s Spiders? We find out what she is doing now with Wyatt’s help, but what about when she first started?
— KASIA: The Spiders’ second in command.
=== What did Kasia do to earn Louisa’s trust?
=== How did she become so skilled?
— WYATT: Attorney General for the State of Illinois
=== Some of the same basic info such as age.
=== What made him so easily accept the political scene in Chicago (bribes, corruption)?
=== He met Ethan at Harvard, his ‘assistant’ that handles the investigations, protection, disposing of their enemies, and pretty much everything else Wyatt needs. How did this type of dynamic develop? How did they learn how to trust each other in this way (orders to kill, dispose of bodies, etc.)?
I mention the following for readers such as myself that visualize the story as it is read, because errors interrupt the flow. There are grammatical errors such as: incorrect capitalization (job titles, honorifics, God, etc.) incorrect punctuation (missing comma, period and space), a few typos, incorrect word tense, incorrect word choice, and missing / extra inserted word. I didn’t highlight and make a note on all of the grammatical issues with punctuation, just the ones that bothered me the most tbh. I uploaded my notes to goodreads for anyone interested.
⛔️ SERIES contains references to, or scenes detailing, subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some, including, but not limited to: adult language; derogatory terms; mental health challenges with depression, anxiety, flashbacks, etc.; steamy adult intimate scenes with elements of BDSM (dominance, submission, restraints, spanking), with degradation and praise word play, no real aftercare though, etc.; violence throughout typical of the Italian mafia (Russian Bratva) genre such as kidnapping / abduction, murder, death, torture, theft, assault, attempted rape, rape, threats, fighting, human trafficking, mental, physical and sexual abuse of adults and children, prostitution, betrayal, drug use, drug manufacturing and selling, illegal gun sales, sabotage, child abandonment, etc.
