Wilde's #1

The Best Man

Rate this book
Jon Beatty thought he had the best man in his ex, Craig. But in the six months since their break up, Craig's managed to find a new lover—a woman—and wants Jon to be a different kind of best man…at his wedding.

Reasoning that the only way to get over one man is to get under another, Jon heads for a local club to get drunk and laid. Bartender Liam Sable is more than willing to help with both.

Their one night stand turns into a rebound fling which enables Jon to move on. Craig, however, is having second thoughts about the break-up. While inconvenient and annoying, Craig’s antics are nothing compared to the danger posed to Jon and Liam's relationship by another, more sinister threat...

4.5 Stars!

I think I can count on one hand the number of freebies I've (a) actually read and (b) actually liked. This one was a winner!

I should never doubt LA Witt!

A lot of reviews said this one had too much sex.

I think it was more so that the sex may have been a bit repetitive. They often made the same moans and groans and said the same "oh gods" and "yes, more" and "harder" but hey, it was still HOT!

Liam and Jon were great! I loved their banter!

Most of the drama and conflict in this one centered around their exes.

Liam isn't quite as forthcoming about his past relationship. That part of the story-line was a little weak for me.

Still, it didn't really take away from the story too much. But it is my main reason for not rounding up.

Overall, this was a good one I would definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed this one. It was a pretty light read considering some of the more darker things that took place near the end. But still enjoyable and I loved Liam and Jon together. They were a steamy pair. The chemistry was off the charts and the sex was HOT!
Both of their ex's are complete douche canoes and I hated them both. Liam's more so for reasons I won't spoil for the ones who haven't read this.
The book is low on the angst and was exactly the type of read I was wanting. It's always a joy to actually read a book and get what you wanted out of it.
I definitely recommend this one!

You know sometimes I am skeptical about the freebies. I think maybe they're free for a reason... and are probably-

I'm happy to say-

Just because it's free doesn't mean it'll necessarily suck. This book way surpassed my expectations. Jon and Liam were great together.

What I loved:
*It was sweet
*It was witty
*Very steamy--->these two men were insatiable!
*Nice story flow

What I didn't love:
* That was kind of lame, but that part of the story didn't take up too much so it wasn't a big deal.
*Craig the Prick

All in all, it was a winner! Really loved it! 4 Solid Stars!

Enjoyable story. I liked Jon and Liam as a couple and enjoyed watching Jon finally get over his ex Craig who is quite self-absorbed and becomes less likable every time he opens his mouth. Liam also has an ex, but that is a whole different set of problems. Both men were very different when they were with their exes and are cautious entering into the relationship, trying to keep it casual.

I agree with other reviews that the sex became a bit repetitive, although Liam and Jon were hot together. Outside of that, it was an entertaining story that hooked me right in the first chapter.

Great start to this series

There's some seriously douchey behaviour in this one as both MCs have truly horrible exes but thankfully all turns out well in the end.

I loved  Jon and Liam and, while they both seemed to me to be younger in my head than their stated ages, they had a wonderful dynamic together.

The sex is scorching hot as I'd expect and, while there's a fair bit of it in a relatively short novella, none of it felt out of place.

It also has a super sweet epilogue.

I'm not sure how to rate this book... I'm undecided between 2.5 and 3 stars..I have so many complaints about it but at the same time I did enjoy it when I wasn't rolling my eyes or skimming the 1 billion sex scenes.. I don't know how to explain it..

Things I didn't like:
- too much sex; to freaking much. I know, I know "what's wrong with me?", but 1.5 out of 2 chapters was a sex scene. No, I am not kidding! And although it was rather hot after while is just got boring and annoying
- almost half of the conversations between the MCs was about how they are gonna have sex and pretty bad sex puns (though they were amusing they were that bad)
- because of the numerous conversations about sex the MCs didn't really talk about important stuff like . Plot twist that I saw a mile coming and Jon should have too since we both (Jon and I, as a reader) had then same info and there was no Liam POV to say that I knew cause I saw what Liam was thinking(hope you guys understand what I meant)

Things I'm not sure how to feel about:
- I'm not sure the whole plot twist was handled very well, though I don't want to judge too much.

Thinks I liked:
- Jon and Liam; they are both very endearing characters
- I liked the narrator voice
- although this book annoyed me a whole lot I still enjoyed it.. huh.. don't know what to make of that..

i skipped, how about most of the book?

this book was all about sex... sleep... waking up and fucking all over again...

this book isn't even one star for me, and what made worst was that :

"vulnerable feeling of paranoia, my heart
pounding as I wondered how long I’d been in how much
danger"

seriously? the man is telling you about his boyfriend abusing him and hurting him, and that he left you to protect you from his fucking ex and that what you first think about.

the 2 stars are in favor of the Liam's story and character.
i loved the man and i loved his fear from his crazy boyfriend, and i loved his weakness and also his sacrifice. i loved that he admitted that he was scared.

i wanted to read mm about a physically abused character by a boyfriend of his, and i
now did
i don't think i had enough from the idea. it seemed unsatisfied and blurred.

the beginning is promising ... middle oh most of it un-read ... the end was good

i think i am not getting along with this author, I've been reading The Given & The Taken and honestly i took a break which means i don't want to continue reading it cause it wasn't good for a great story and i hated one of the characters.

i am sorry to say i kinda of ready to give up on reading anything by this author .

Jon was ditched six months earlier. To make matters worse, his ex, Craig, immediately started a committed relationship with a woman. For some reason, duh, she does not like that Jon and Craig are still friends. The fact that Jon still wants Craig does not help. Now Craig is going to marry Rebecca and wants Jon to be his best man. He tells Jon to go out and have fun instead of sitting around missing him. Jon laments the joys of being with a bisexual man. I wondered if the girlfriend before me had felt the same way when she'd found out about us.

Jon takes Craig's advice and goes to Wilde's, a high brow gay club but still offering the important amenities of a gay bar - hook ups.

On the prowl. Christ, I don't even know what I'm looking for.

A knot twisted in my gut as I headed for the bar for a little courage on the rocks. It was entirely too soon to even think about a relationship, so if I met anyone tonight, it was either casual sex or friendship. Glancing around at the guys getting close on the dance floor and even closer in booths, friendship was pretty much off the menu in a place like this.

This story is told from Jon's POV. We are in his head. He meets Liam, the bar manager and bartender.

Signing, I turned back around to face the bar, and my breath caught in my throat.

Leaning casually against the counter below the top shelf bottles was a different bartender. Even the club's dim light didn't detract from his striking, pale green eyes, and I couldn't look away from him if I wanted to. He didn't seem to mind the fact that I was staring, though. After all, he was looking right at me.

When I could finally look somewhere other than his eyes, I wasn't disappointed.

And they were hot together. I loved them both. Liam had a recent breakup of a long term relationship also. He was not looking for a relationship, just sex. There was an excuse for a mystery but it was not much of one. Craig was an as----e. His girlfriend threatened by the wrong thing. Jon and Liam didn't talk much but there was certainly plenty of sex. Jon (through L. A. Witt) gave the best explanation of why hetro women love to read MM stories.

Grasping the front of my shirt, he pulled me down onto the bed on top of him. For the longest time, we just kissed, making out like I hadn't done in years. We made a few feeble attempts to loosen and remove clothing, but didn't get very far. What we both wanted was simple, but clothing was colicated, so we didn't bother.

I had never been wanted like this. This was pure, hot, primal lust. No emotional bullshit to tangle things up and make things complicated. No mind games. No trying to use sex to communicate something deeper or find some connection that went beyond physical. Just two men who wanted to fuck. Nothing more. Nothing less.

At her worse, L. A. Witt is wonderful. At her best, she is mind bending wonderful. This is neither, but still a good read.

I'm gonna give it 4★'s even if the added drama pissed me off and left me with a question I don't want answered.

The majority, like 90% of the book made me nothing but feel good.

Totally hot love story. Really hot.

I have to agree with some reviewers who said that there was just too much sex in this book. And it was pretty repetitive in description so it added nothing really. I liked the two main characters together but, boy, did they appear to have been weak with their former (or not so former) partners.

Jon and Liam meet after having split up with former boyfriends. Jon's been asked, by his ex (Craig), to be best man at Craig and Rebecca's wedding. Odd request, if you ask me. I would have said no. Craig, as it turns out, really isn't that bisexual since he can't keep it in his pants where other men are concerned. Rebecca's fears that Craig would be seduced by Jon are misplaced. Anything in pants works for Craig, apparently. Craig's OK with Jon being alone till he hears Jon's getting very cozy with Liam. Liam, on the other hand, is being stalked by his ex, Travis. Travis is obviously a few fries short of a happy meal and doesn't want his ex (well, he doesn't see Liam as his ex) hanging out with some new man (Jon). He starts to act on his jealousy but Jon doesn't realize the man who is following him is Liam's ex.

Anyway, Liam didn't tell Jon the extent of his fears over Travis and his behaviour. He doesn't tell him Travis was abusive. He just eventually dumps Jon.

I didn't like how weak Liam was where Travis was concerned. He was weak because he let his fear dictate his actions. He was independent so I didn't know why he stayed with Travis. He had a job. He had his own friends yet he let Travis bully him into staying.

I would have liked a more believable ex for Liam. Or someone who had more of a hold over him because I really didn't see how Travis had the hold over Liam that he did.

3,5 stars.

First I didn't realize I read this one before... but after a while the storyline looked familiar.

The Best Man is the first book of the Wilde's books. The following books (4 so far) are part of The Distance Between Us series, I have no idea why The Best Man isn't?

It's is about Jon, who still pines after his ex boyfriend Craig and Wilde's bartender Liam. But not only Jon has issues with his ex ... Liam has dangerous secrets, too.

The guys fall for each other, and of course all of their ex-boyfriend drama is getting in the way of their beginning romance.

Apart from far too many very exaggerated sex scenes.... seriously, can you imagine two grown up men in their late thirties fuck like rabbits all the damn time?... it was an okay read.

The Best Man was a story that started as a comedy and ended as a drama, and that was probably the most unexpected, but nice, surprise of the story.

When at the beginning of the story Jon receives the “bad” news about the marriage of his ex-boyfriend Craig, together with the offer to be the best man at such wedding, I was totally expecting for this story to turn into a gay “my best-friend’s wedding” type of romance. My expectation were: a) that Jon was willing to do anything to conquering back Craig and b) that in trying to do that he would have fallen in love for Liam, the “other man” who was helping him.

So when Jon goes out to find solace and he meets Liam, I was thinking, good the first step in my plan is done, now go on with the next; except that it was MY plan and not Jon or Liam’s plan. After the first night they spent together, Jon is really starting to heal from the breakup with Craig, and he is less and less interested in what Craig will do or whom he will marry. Of course while me, as a reader, is witnessing to that, Craig is still unaware that he is no more the main interest in Jon’s life. That first night Craig didn’t come out like a very nice character: while he was kind, and apparently interested in Jon’s good, he was really uncaring in asking him to be his best man, above all since he well knew that Jon was not over their story. And I had the feeling that he felt pleased by the fact that Jon was still mooning over him, his suggestion to Jon to go out and get laid was only a scene since he wasn’t really expecting for Jon to follow his advice.

Jon’s character, and his evolution from heart-broken ex-boyfriend to new-lover has an average pace, meaning that it’s not sudden but neither so slow to be boring; the reader has enough proofs that the story is conceivable, and that Jon’s feelings are true: Liam is not a rebounding love.

In all of this Liam’s character was a bit neglected until more or less half the book. He did an evolution like Jon, but his was slightly different: it seemed like more Jon was gaining strength and more Liam was losing his. He was also the reason why the story shifted from comedy to drama, but all in all it was a good thing for him, because in this way he gained a deepness that if he was the usual hot-bartender he would have not.

On a side note, The Best Man is set in the same “world” as The Distance Between Us, meaning that both Kiernan from The Distance Between Us than Liam from The Best Man are bartenders in a gay night club Wilde’s that apparently is notorious for its hotties.

Overall book rating:3.5
Audio Book: Zack Andrews - 4
Book Cover: 1.5

The audio firstly, was really nice. I enjoyed the little extra's like the laughs ect. and Zack Andrews has a great voice.

I enjoyed the read as well. Although there were times I wished there would be a little more happening than these two constantly having at each other like Duracell bunnies. But I wanted to read on never the less.

But then somewhere along the way...well...the wicked X of the East, West North and South stepped in....and I was kinda sorta.....

I honestly got why Liam didn't mention the crazy S.O.B too Jon at first. You don't think it's gonna be serious so you keep it to yourself. Then, you can see it going somewhere more serious...so...you keep it to yourself...then...you realize the crazy person is now in fact stalking your new interest...so...you ...apparently still keep in to yourself??

I'm sorry, call me crazy but THAT I DIDN'T GET!!

Then...there is the Crazy X himself. He is one scary Mother Buffer...because every guy in his immediate surrounding seems to be scared shitless of him?

Stop reading this is a possible or definite SPOILER!!

I'm sorry but who the hell is this guy?? The incredible Hulk gone bad? Where in the book did I miss his immense built and steel muscles?? Where did I miss Liam being small of stature and easily blown over by the slightest wind??

I didn't get it. I'm sorry maybe I'm being seriously Sour Faced here for feeling this way, but the last part of this story just frustrated me. I don't see why a grown man of 30 something would think the only option to keep someone he loves safe is to bravely sacrifice his future to this a-hole, he has big ass bouncer friends for crying out load!!. I didn't get why every guy in the room was scared of this man, when all it took for him to get his sh*t together was for Liam to slam him against a wall.....yeah..I don't get it.

The drama was frustrating to me simply because I don't see 'n MAN acting this way. a Girl, yeah maybe. But no. Not two grown ass men. The "shiver down my spine" think used closely to 100 times didn't do it for me either.

The rest was enjoyable. Not sorry I read it. Just wish the ending was more believable maybe..

 photo tumblr_njs4haee2s1unkaf7o1_400_zpsumnqbfz5.gif

I like :)

It was a nice easy read. I liked the storyline. I didn't care much about Liams ex boyfriend. Figured out what was going on during the first couple of pages, so no surprise there. Craig was just an idiot.
But Liam and Jon were HOT together.

There was a lot of sex in this book...I did not mind one bit. What I did mind was the number of times "Oh my god" was said. Damn, but it had the same lines every single sexscene. That kind of irritated me. Not enough that I didn't find it hot though.

3,5 - 4 stars for me.

This is a story about Jon and Liam who have both been in a long term relationship and have problems with their ex-partners who do not seem to want to stay out of the picture. They have a one night stand that slowly develops into something more. Both Jon and Liam are likeable characters most of the time, however at times I did find them a little annoying. I think if some of the sex scenes were taken out and there was little more focus on their relationship developing it would have been much better.

LA Witt is another go-to author for me...I pretty much enjoy everything that she puts out there.
This book was pretty much 80% Awesomeness that is sex, dirty talk, hilarious banter and Wilde's! The other 20% was a total clutsterfuck of drama! Was it perfect...nope but I liked it anyway!

3.5 rounded up.

Liam Sable and Jon Beatty are both getting over bad breakups. After being asked to be the best man in his exes wedding, Jon finally breaks the slump and goes out to a club, where he meets Liam, aka, the handsome bartender.

After a night of casual sex, they decide to start a casual relationship of sorts, but we all know, nothing stays casual for long.

The book:

So here's the thing, I liked this. I did. It just didn't wow me. It was one of those things were I could take it or leave it, and I honestly was debating rounding down, but I enjoyed it much more with the action at the end.

Part of my problem was that a lot of it seemed repetitive, at least for the first half of the book. Even their sex scenes were boring after a while, and I don't take that kind of thing lightly, because c'mon, sex scenes, guys.

I did enjoy the "twist" that we got, as it added a little dimension for me that was really lacking previously. I think things could've been expanded on quite a bit, but it wasn't bad.

To sum it up, this was an okay book, but not something I'll be thinking about come tomorrow morning.

3.5 stars. Still enjoyed all the sweet stuff.

Original Review
I have a love hate relationship with this series -maybe because I haven't read them in order- but I just LOVED this.

It was sweet, sexy, romantic and funny.

It had a couple of douchebag exes to keep it interesting.

AND...OMG...the sex...the sex...the sex...was AMAZING, INTENSE, HOT and so BEAUTIFUL too.

On a more serious note - this is the first MM story I have read that involved domestic violence (which I didn't realise before reading it) and even though it was a relatively small part of the story it was really well written and left a big impression. The emotions I felt at the end of this book for these characters stayed with me when so many times it just doesn't.

This wasn't half bad, but it wasn't half good either!
Plot-wise and protagonist-wise, really good. Liam and Jon newly single men meet up in the bar where Liam works, hook up for a mutually attracted one night stand and end up in a relationship. Cute. Bit of angst and dark towards the end but love conquers all and we are rewarded with the HEA epilogue. Fine.
The bad? Too much sex, far too much. I'd guess over half the story is descriptive-sex prose. It became so boring and tedious, I ended up skipping huge chunks of more descriptions of the same thing, the same thing......over and over and over again! Bleugh!
Gay porn with a story.
I liked it, and would have liked it more if some of the sex had been replaced with a bit more plot.
2.5 rounded up.

Would have liked it more if I didn't get bored by the one sex scene per 5 pages ratio... I mean, seriously, they are both in their thirties, you don't just "give me a few minutes" all night long...

Characterisation wise, the main hero is well written, the 2nd hero a bit inconsistent - especially after revealing his true problem with his ex, you wouldn't have guessed he'd be someone who would be bullied. Other supporting characters are just sloppy and rather typical.

The romance is convincing and have some genuine touching moments. I'd say, it will be a better read if someone edit this book and cut out 60% of the "oh my god' sex scenes.

Not the greatest book in the world, but L.A. Witt has a way of making me love even her most mundane stories. I love the chemistry between her characters, and the sex scenes are just phenomenal. There were things about Jon and Liam that I absolutely hated, and yet I was still able to sympathize with them and like them despite wanting to slap them. Witt tends to make her characters those of the "soul mates" variety without making that fact too obvious, and I just can't help but love it.

I've got to admit I was a little disappointed by this one. Yes, it's got great dirty talk and some pretty creative sex, but there's not an interesting enough plot to hold it together for me.

I really would have liked to see more of Craig, that would have been a much better story - and .

I just prefer Witt's current stuff better, I'm spoiled :)
