Lorenzo never expected to be looking for a new pack.
But when his Alpha's behavior pushes him out, he finds himself fighting in the tournament to show off his skills to potential new Alphas.
Only problem is, his old Alpha just can't seem to let things go...
Lorenzo is a complication Thatcher doesn't need...
Thatcher never thought he'd be in the tournament either. Or that he'd end up sharing a tent with someone as sexy as Lorenzo.
He just wants to focus on competing. But, man. It's difficult.
This could get real complicated real fast.

I really enjoyed the story there was a nice personality for Thatcher. The ending was great in my opinion. A little surprising but great. It is a really nice short read. I would have liked a little bit more depth in it though to tie the relationship together more firmly.
I did have one major gripe but there’s a reason only towards my predicament. The editing had some errors that were missed. This is only “almost a DNF” thing for me because I’m on the spectrum so sadly when I see an issue my brain latches to it and it takes a couple minutes to get back into the flow of reading. Which really sucks for me, but, I still pushed on and I’m happy I did!
Another minor thing I was also confused at people being mentioned but not appearing often/at all in the book. There were a couple names mentioned but we never got to read about them. I’m hoping that further in the short read series it’ll bring up those shifters.
I’d be willing to read this series all the way through down the line though!
This is the first book I’ve read in this series and I’m happy to report that it can be read as a standalone, I wasn’t at sea trying to figure out WTF was going on.
The plot for this was interesting. I would have liked to see a little more of the bonding between the two MCs. I don’t understand why it was mentioned that Lorenzo’s buddy was a healer, when he never once was around or fetched when they needed a healer. But, overall, a quick read and I’d give more in the series a try.
The editing was kinda sloppy, with some glaringly obvious typos throughout. Not enough to make it unreadable, but enough that some sentences required a second reading.
I loved the promise of this book, don't get me wrong the plot was interesting, the characters sweet and completely perfect for each other and the sex hot. I just wish it was longer! The characters were good but could have been amazing if the author had more time to develop them! Also edit, edit, edit. this was in need of some editing software or beta readers to point out some misused words and lack of grammar. Good with lots of potential but not great.
Overall I really enjoyed this novella. Lorenzo and Thatcher were both characters you could root for. The resolution to Lorenzo’s problem with his old alpha, Haas, and the subequent ending were very satisfying. I could have rated this higher but I give major deductions when an experienced author releases a book that is 18th in the series and is a editing disaster! Way way too many mistakes, some of which were rather distracting.
A couple of chapters in, everything became very familiar. This was the same story as Valentina’s Mate. While this was m/m, that was m/f. Everything else was the same. The protagonists were likeable, but the editing was very bad. I suspect Wilder has churned out the book without even rereading it.
This was a pretty good book. Thatcher and Lorenzo meet at a tournament to find new packs. Lorenzo's ex crashes the party. Thatcher gets poisoned twice. Lorenzo has enough and challenges his Alpha. A must read with a HEA.
I was first introduced to this author via Wattpad. It was a pleasure to find them on Kindle and to be able to support them here. They have a different twist on the mate genre of supernatural beings. I enjoy reading their works!
I enjoyed this story, but it need some serious editing. The characters were interesting. I like this series and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series
This is part of a much larger Mate series but can be read as a stand alone.
The MCs Thatcher: A big brawny werewolf who disagrees with his current alpha and is looking for a new pack. Lorenzo: Another werewolf looking for a new pack. He’s not a big and brawny as Thatcher, but he makes up for in in skill and smarts.
The Plot
Each year there is this big tournament that werewolves travel to if they want to secure a spot with a new pack. They all complete in fighting matches with the pack alphas looking for new recruits watching. Lorenzo is there this year because he broke up with his boyfriend, the Alpha of his old pack and the Alpha took it poorly (he was a dick). Thatcher is leaving his because it seems the new Alpha feels threatened by him and is all but making him unwelcome. These two are bunked together and its basically insta lust/love. The plot thickens when Lorenzo’s old Alpha keeps coming up with progressively more dickish ways to threaten Lorenzo to come back to him.
The pros I liked both Thatcher and Lorenzo. Neither was a particularly deep character, but they were likable nonetheless. It was a short read. And it had an HEA with an epilogue even.
The cons The editing was horrible. Very sloppy. Apparently spellcheck was not a thing for the author and decent grammar was also optional. Also there were some quizzical parts like why introduce one of Lorenzo’s friends, who is a healer no less, then not really mention him again even when Thatcher is hurt?
This was a free novella so my expectations weren’t terribly high.
This was an uncomplicated story with some nice steamy moments. The idea of the tournament was a good vehicle to introduce Thatcher and Lorenzo and give time for them to become close. Rather than sexual chemistry, I felt like the two had a friends-to-lovers vibe. I liked that they spent time together outside the bedroom in both human and wolf form. The fight scenes were nicely done (both those in the ring and out) and were a nice prelude to the big showdown. I was very satisfied with the resolution of the story. Having read another in this series I can say that they are all completely standalones so no worries there. This novella made for a nice late evening read when I didn't want something that would keep me up too late.
New author for me, and thought this was well written for a short story. The main characters were well developed as was the setting and storyline. Can't fault the hot sex, either.
Considering this is like #18 out of 20 in the series, I'm going to suspect all the books are stand alones.
