Of all the desperate adventures, this is the most desperate - and the most vital. Only two years remain before the year 1000, when the Magi's power will have waxed full and the moment of their reincarnation will be at hand!
All is not lost; if you can recover the fragments of the Blood Sword, the Magi can be opposed. But to do do, you must travel to the land of death...
As you set off on your journey, you know there will be many terros and wonders to be faced. You must penetrate to the very heart of the netherworld and plead your case before Death himself. Can you survive the perils of the Sea of Mists? How will you fare against Typhon the Giant? Can you face the feasting dead? Or track down Entasius the Magician? Can you endure the Doomwalk...?
Doomwalk is the fourth book in the Bloodsword gamebook collection. This is arguably the best and most memorable of the Bloodsword series, due to the underworld location and suitably dark and disturbing atmosphere. It would have served as a worthy ending to the series The only drawback from the series was the complex combat system. But that is easily solvable, just don't bother with it. The book stands up on the quality of the writing alone.
I owned many gamebook series back in the day but culled most of them from my collection. Bloodsword is the collection I regret getting rid of the most, hence me purchasing it again. On a more positive note, at least the authors got paid twice over. There are probably around ten stand out gamebook series in total, this being one of them. One or both of the authors being involved in three or four of the others (more if you allow for Jamie Thomson's cameo role in book 5). But then you probably know that already if you're reading this.
This book is the highlight of the series for me, thanks to its setting and (in part) its story being inspired by ancient Greek mythology, while the adventure is a little easier to complete - or, to be more precise, the combats are not as difficult - as in the second and third books. In many ways, it would have made a suitable final volume in the series.
