I consider myself blessed I'm able to do this for a living. I live for fantasy books as a reader and author. I adore books like An Ember in the Ashes, The Night Angel Trilogy, Harry Potter, The Great Library series...I could go on.
Before I write I have four young humans I keep alive and love them to the stars and back again. I live in Utah with my sexy husband, the kiddos, two paranoid dogs, and a sinister cat. Between finishing a second degree, running a business, and eating too much chocolate, I love writing early in the morning when no one is awake. If you can't tell, I basically function on caffeine.
Rise of a Guardian (The Lost Relics #1) by LJ Andrews is a good fantasy teen novel. It started out good, got a little slow then picked up again at the end. Lots of imagination and fantasy in here with great potential. Needs some editing but love the characters and the story itself. I went on to read the next book and it was much better!
Killian's story is full of action and suspense, with a healthy dash of humor. LJ Andrews has created a truly magical world-- I want to have friends like Mercedes and Dax! I was hooked from the very first pages! I look forward to reading the next book in The Lost Relics series.
I was so drawn into this book that it is only now I realise the day has gone on around me. I loved everything about this book, the characters, the storyline.... Just everything worked so well together that I can't wait to read the next book.
Epic story that I had to read all of once I began! Killian starts off as a normal guy that's been thru hell but then the proverbial crap hits the fan and now he learns he's the key to saving the universe. His myriad of friends keep him sane for the most part, but every time he turns around he's running into another person betraying him. This story is full of antics of all kinds and the characters are all fun to get to know. You won't be disappointed.
Decent storyline and a fast pace, but quite amateurish writing takes away some of the potential. The author states that this book had a professional editor, but if that’s true then they should look for a new one pronto. Passed and past do not mean the same thing. Still, this is a debut novel so hopefully the author learns and develops as the story continues.
This epic tale starts on our world where a foster child has grown to adulthood but stays in the home to protect his foster mother. Bad things happen, then worse things happen, but joy of joys an old friend whisks him and a friend away to a safe base on another realm. Great and sometimes frightening things are discovered. Life changing choices have to be made. True friendships are formed, and tested. But oh no, bad things happen again. Will this small band of friends survive? I know I'm being vague but I have an aversion to revealing points of the book the author has worked so hard to make real for us. You need to read the words as presented in the book. This is a well written and fascinating tale. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. Thank you L J Andrews.
Good premise but needs a bit of editing/ restructuring
It's not often I don't finish a book, but I didn't finish this one. It begins with a good steady pace, but then shifts into a significant chunk of giving the main protagonist and the reader key information about the world of the series- this might have been better in a prologue or an appendix, as it made for quite a long stint without any action. The action jumped a bit, the characters' motivations and emotional attachments seemed to take big leaps rather than develop naturally...the first few chapters showed so much promise which is why I'm leaving a review, as the premise is great, the delivery just needs a bit more editing and developing!
Very well written! I loved the well described characters, scenery, actions, etc. I could easily picture it in my mind even though it was nothing like anything I have known. Only in Ms Andrews’ imagination. Well done Ms Andrews! I was captivated by this story. Sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of the next twist, the next revelation, the next action, the next scene. However, I could never have figured out the betrayal that took place. And now at the end of this book, Ms Andrews has informed us there is more betrayal to come. I’m glad I have all three books at my disposal so I don’t have to wait for it. So here I go on to the next one.
I enjoyed this book. It tells the story of how a kid from earth learns that he is a guardian of the realms. He discovers he has powers from all the realms from the relic he had that he didn't even know he was protected ting and it wS stolen from him. Together with his friends Blake, soph, Dax and Deu they must figure out who the Trinity are and why they are trying to get all the relics and him. Looking forward to reading the next book.
I enjoyed this book. It was a fresh take on fantasy. I had a couple of problems that influenced my rating. One, as others have mentioned, it needs edited and proofread, basically just cleaned up. And two, there were insta-emotions between Mercedes and Killian. That relationship seemed a bit quick and forced to me. I really liked the other characters, and although it's a tiny bit slow in places, the plot is great.
At first I almost put the book down. I stuck with it and got a bit involved. Is it a great story? No. But, for the first novel, it has great potential. I stayed involved with the story. It is clean and wholesome. I look forward to reading what comes next.
A great story of extreme evil v extreme good, told a new way. Strange creatures abound, as well as different people from different places. A book to escape into for a rainy weekend.
Wow! What a journey this was! First of all, I really enjoyed this book. Second, I had to share the love to the writer, LJ Andrews. The characters come alive with all of the action and frightening situations. It was one of those books that made a movie play in my head as I was reading. I love it when an author creates such vivid scenes and characters. This is the story of Killian. Killian, an orphan left to the system to protect him, was put into an awful situation at the age of 8. He was placed with an abusive foster father that beat him until he was old enough to defend himself, then he beat his foster mother more severely. On a particular day, he found his foster father severely beating his foster mother. He forces the father to stop and called the police then went to his best friends house. He ends up being arrested as his father told the police he had beat her. In the trial, his beloved foster mother lies to protect her abuser and Killian is sent to prison. While out in his work program, he runs into a girl he had met the summer before and together, they get attacked by strange animals. This is the beginning of a wild journey for Killian. He finds out he's sooo much more than a human and starts his training to be something more. Like I said, this book is full of action and deadly creatures. Although there is a love interest involved, that's not what the story is about. It's about Killian trying to figure out this new life and his place in it.
The writing of this made a lot of parts fairly confusing. It got better as time went on but the start was very choppy. I had to reread a lot of the story just to figure out what was going on.
The story line is fairly typical but I loved the world building part of it. Just for the world I would go after book 2. If you can get past the first part of the book and the fairly predictable nature the book is pretty good. With some editing I feel this book would be great for teenagers.
When the author used the word 'drug' as past tense for the word 'drag' (instead of 'dragged') for a second time in the space of 2 chapters I knew this book wasn't for me. Shocking spelling/grammar made it impossible to have the chance to enjoy the book. I don't neccessarily expect there to be absolutely mistakes, but this was too much.
Furthermore, I found the characters a bit pathetic which made them difficult to like, and the relationships between characters were strange from the beginning. However, I couldn't get past chapter 3 before giving up, so maybe this improves later in the book.
An interesting concept turns into a great story. Yes it starts off a little slow while the story is developing but stick with it and a wicked tale emerges. This author does a great job of laying a foundation and giving you a birds eye view of the worlds she has created and how they work together. The story is compelling and worth the read. This is my first read of this author and I will definitely read more.
The premise is interesting and is what earns this book 4 stars. The characters are realistic if somewhat naive. My peeves with this book is that the chapters jump in time without any spacers and the editing needs to be redone. Ms. Andrews is a certified copy editor yet this book is full of incorrect homonyms and some incorrect words such as clamor instead of clamber being used to describe someone climbing onto something.
This book pulled me right in. I received a free copy from Amazon and now want to read the other two in this trilogy. I am following the author on Facebook and her page. I am so please she is writing a new short story as part of this series. The characters are well developed. You will feel for Killian right from the start.
It was different from all the other mythical books i 've read. I read a lot. It started too slow & I gave up after a few pages, boredom brought me back to it & it turned out great
I love the storyline. The concept is pretty original, the characters are easy to connect with, and the monsters rock. It could have been edited better, but I'd read it again
I. Chose this rating because I think there is more and better to come . A most enjoyable read which I think should appeal to all readers of SI,FI and fantasy .
