The Bhagavad Gita

Rate this book
The Bhagavad Gita, often referred to as simply the Gita, is a 700 verse Hindu scripture in Sanskrit that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Hindu traditionalists assert that the Gita came into existence in the third or fourth millennium BC. Religion & spirituality scholars, Hinduism scholars, sacred writings scholars, and Eastern scholars all accept dates from the fifth century to the second century BC as the probable range. The Gita is set in a narrative framework of a dialogue beetween Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide and charioteer Lord Krishna. The Bhagavad Gita's call for selfless action inspired many leaders of the Indian independence movement. It is said that Gandhi referred to the Bhagavad Gita as his spiritual dictionary. The Bhagavad is studied by many people and by many scholars. Religion & spirituality scholars, Hinduism scholars, sacred writings scholars, and Eastern scholars all study the Bhagavad Gita.

I have read this book because it is on the "The Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge" book list that I am doing and since the Bible says "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" I have no problem with that.

My reaction to the contents of this book:

There is only One Almighty and Most High, and that is not Krishna, but the Holy Trinity God; 1. the God of Israel; the heavenly Father; the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, 2. His Son the Lord Jesus Christ; the Messiah 3.and His Holy Spirit!

There is only one Divine writing, and that is the Bible; the Word of God.

In the preface, the author dares to compare this book with the New Testament and some things have been stolen and twisted from it, but that is not surprising because the devil and his false prophets are wolves in sheep's clothing. After all, the devil himself tried to tempt the Lord Jesus Christ in the desert by misusing Old Testament scriptures.

It says in this book that you bear fruit by doing good works. This is very unbiblical and therefore not true because our sins get in the way. The correct order is first conversion to Jesus Christ, thereby receiving the Holy Spirit and then the good works themselves are bearing fruit and therefore the result instead of the beginning!

For the rest, on each page there is at least one unbiblical and therefore untrue something and that is far too much to mention here.

Since it says in this book that you come to Krishna through yoga, this also proves that yoga is essentially occult.

I do like the way it is written though. Very poetic and makes me think of Shakespeare a little.

This is my favourite holy book. It is lyrical and it basically captures a conversation between Arjun and God. This translation was very straightforward and easy to read.
