Dit boek werd genomineerd voor de Zoute Zoen, de belangrijkste manuscriptenprijs voor een jeugdboek in het Nederlands taalgebied, en werd daarbij tweede. Haar tweede roman 'Kieuw' werd genomineerd voor diverse prijzen in Nederland en Vlaanderen en won de Accolade voor het 'Beste Jeugdboek' (Zeeuwse Boekenprijs). 'Dromer' - Maaskants derde roman, won 'De Kleine Cervantes 2018'. Haar vierde jeugdroman 'Meerminnen verdrinken niet' werd genomineerd voor de Archeon Thea Beckmanprijs 2021.
In juni 2021 kreeg ze de diagnose hodgkin. Ze blogde een tijd lang over haar avonturen als (ex)kankerpatiënt op de social media. Deze verhalen gingen regelmatig viraal. Een aantal van die verhalen, met nog heel veel nieuwe, verschenen in november 2022 in Maaskants volwassendebuut - de verhalenbundel 'Bijna iedereen heeft kanker'.
In de boekenweek van 2024 (maart) verscheen een unieke samenwerking met Zeeuwse kunstenaar Jan-Willem Hament: 'Zeeuwminnetje'. Een boek op metrum en rijm voor alle leeftijden.

Dreamer, William and Mila live in a world where their life is chosen for them. The decision makers rule from the citadel with an iron hand. But Dreamer doesn't feel like a thinker. William is much more than a doer and Mila is something that should be impossible. They long for freedom. Then they hear about an island where they can be theirselves. An escape from the citadel.
Review: I was really glad to find a Dutch book with a description that I really liked, so I was quite excited to read this one. It seemed a lot like Divergent and I really enjoyed those series. So I decided to pick this one up, knowing that the year is almost coming to an end and I still wanted to read a few books in December. Yet, I'm not really sure if I enjoyed this one as much as I thought I would. The concept is really nice. The story itself is very interesting and it reads very easily. It's great that the story is written in different points of view so that you can really understand the characters, or at least I think that's what the author tried to do. The thing was, I didn't understand it at all.
I love romance, I'm a sucker for it in every single book. At first I thought that was exactly what this story was going to bring me, a sweet love story during times of war. Man, I was wrong. Why? Because there's one thing I don't like, and that's a bad love triangle. Dreamer, William and Mila, not were they all the lead characters of this book, they were also friends. I can handle it if there are two guys who are in love with the same girl, but I hate it when the girl can't make a choice between the two of them and end up having both of them. I don't like sharing. The further I got into this story the more I felt like I hated Mila and I simply couldn't seem to understand what was going through her head. She wasn't just playing with their feelings, but also with her own. And then in the end they act as if nothing happened and all is good.
Then there was the use of language inside of this book. It was an easy book to read, it was pleasant and fun. Yet, somehow I found the language a little bit vulgar sometimes. And even though I understand that it fitted with the personality of William, I think it could have been done differently. Sometimes it was as if there were more trash words in it than anything else and all the characters were constantly thinking about sex, while there was a war going on around them. Maybe it should have focused a little bit more on what was going on around him, on the action and the scenery instead of all those bottled up sexual tensions.
I did really enjoy the story itself. The chapters were divided very well and it was so easy to read through it. Though at the end I somehow felt like I had to push myself to finish it. I'm glad I did. There were many beautiful details in the story as well. The songs were very well chosen for this book very well written. There were many surprises through out the book, missing characters popping up which had appeared shortly in memories of the lead characters. The thought of the island was very nice and that this group of new kids has to be the one to start a revolution. It was a nice read, but the cheating, if you can even call it like that and the love triangle simply ruined it for me.

Een verhaal met veel potentie maar erg verwarrend geschreven. Het is dat ik wilde weten of het af zou lopen zoals ik HD gedacht, anders had ik het niet uitgelezen

Ik had dit boek gelezen voor de kleine Cervantes. Echt een fantastisch boek. Een van de beste boeken die ik heb gelezen toen ik 14 was. Een origineel verhaal met alles wat je nodig hebt. Vriendschap, een beetje romantiek, rebellie, ...

helaas helaas, en best jammer, maar het is bij "niet koud, noch warm" gebleven. Ik had wel graag meer samenhorigheid "gevoeld". Ze zat zeker in het boek, maar als ik ze als lezer niet kan voelen, krijg je dus "koud, noch warm".

Interessant idee, maar vond het niet heel goed geschreven. Voor m'n gevoel ging het best wel snel, sloten niet alle stukken altijd goed op elkaar aan, en was er redelijk veel 'tell' in plaats van 'show'

Fun to read but not a original story

Saskia, je hebt het weer geflikt. Wat een boek!
Een boek dat wordt aanbevolen voor liefhebbers van de Divergent trilogie, maar als je het mij vraagt vind ik het een goede mix van Divergent, The Hunger Games en The Maze Runner. Maar aan de andere kant is het totaal anders dan deze boeken.
Daarnaast is het zo heerlijk geschreven. En het aftelsysteem bij het begin van elk hoofdstuk is zo zenuwslopend (dat is positief) dat je niet anders kan dan doorlezen. Hoe gaat het aflopen, wat gaat er hierna gebeuren? Je wilt het gewoon weten. Ik wilde het weten en ik vond de uitkomst geweldig.
Het slaat namelijk best wel op de werkelijkheid. In welk hokje zit jij? En ben je het er mee eens? Laat je niet in een hokje stoppen en wees jezelf.
Hofstad is een andere wereld. Een wereld waarin door anderen wordt bepaald hoe jij je leven moet leiden. Zou jij dat kunnen? Dromer in ieder geval niet. Maar hij is niet alleen.
Samen met de rest vecht hij voor een toekomst. Een toekomst waarin hij zelf mag bepalen hoe die eruit ziet.

Iwas very curious about this one and it was a beautiful book. I could not stop reading.
