The Art of Being Emily

Rate this book
Together for the first time in one volume are the previously published first three entries in the Emily series.

The Year My Life Went Down the Loo:

When sixteen-year-old Emily’s family uproots her from Seattle to England right before her junior year, she has to adjust to a whole new lingo, new friends, and a serious lack of malls. Luckily, hunkalicious British boys do exist!

They Wear Under Their Kilts?

Emily spends her month of work experience on a Scottish sheep farm, complete with wild sheep, her best friend Holly, and Ruaraidh the shepherd, AKA the Scottish God of Love who just happens to have eleven fingers. Kilt-watching, disastrous castle tours, graffiti spray-painted sheep, and tanning lotions gone horribly awry—it’s just another month in the life of Emily.

What's French For "EW!"?

Spring break arrives, and Emily is in Paris to learn French. With her trusty friend Holly at her side, an anti-pregnancy doll named Jack, and snogariffic boyfriend Devon arriving for a visit, Emily's habit of getting into the most hilarious situations ever results in her storming more than just the Bastille. Will Paris survive her visit?

Katie Maxwell is a pseudonym of Katie MacAlister .

Katie MacAlister is a Seattle-area author of fiction and non-fiction. Her most popular titles are historical, contemporary, and paranormal romance. She also writes Young Adult books under the pseudonym Katie Maxwell and Mysteries under the pseudonym Kate Marsh.

About Katie

as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books later, her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

The Art of Being Emily
This was a little hard to read in the beginning because it was all done in e-mail format. But after reading for a while I caught the flow. Emily is such a hoot. She is 16 and as a typical teenager gets upset with her parents (especially brother, her name for her father)
She is taken to a foreign country for a year and seems to get into trouble no matter where she is. She makes friends easily especially boys. She falls in love at the drop of a hat but is still smart enough to know right from wrong (sometimes).
When she got the fake baby I laughed so hard that my sides hurt. I almost felt sorry for that poor baby. She tried her best to protect it but like any baby it needed constant attention. He had the timing down pat to stop her from doing something’s but not all the times. I wonder what horseface (the teacher) thought when she finally gave him back, lost eye, bad arms and waterlogged cries. Did she get a failing grade or did she just get by and told not to have kids?
She did not need the help of the twins to get into trouble she could do that all by herself. Getting caught in the trap going into places she should not have been. Getting caught in the tower thanks to the twins.
I am glad that she finally ended up with Fang. He seemed like the kind of person who just might tame her and keep her out of trouble. I can not wait to read the last two parts to see if she is still getting into situations that are wordly of any teenager.

I really enjoyed these three novellas by Katie Macalister. The Year My Life Went Down The Loo covers the period during which Emily is a 16-year-old Seattle teen, whose life is literally turned upside down when her family moves to England. Emily tells us her story in email form as she writes to her friend Dru back in the States. Makeup, boys, Liam Hemsworth and trying to fit into a new school obsess Emily. Oh and did I mention she calls her father Brother which is strange but fits. There are kilts and an older sister named Bess who is interesting in her own way and a haunted underwear drawer. Quite funny.

Next up is They Wear What Under Their Kilts-continues Emily's school year adventures as she's off to Scotland for her month long "work experience" required by school. Brother and her mother take her to Scotland where she will be under her Aunt and Uncle’s watch. This covers her misadventures and boy craziness in Scotland with her new friend Holly. A hottie web site page is developed which I would love to click on……This shows you the naive, cute awkward, sophisticated funny sides of a teen.

Next up is What's French For "Ew?"- Emily's school year misadventures continue on in Paris with her friend Holly from school in England. She is in France for a two-week intense class in French to try to catch up with her class. As usual Emily gets into all kinds of misadventures and boy trouble with her hotties craze. There are the scenes with the LuvMyBaby doll that are so funny.

Another great read from Katie. Well worth the time to read it brings back a lot of awkward teen-age angst in a humorous way.

The Art of Being Emily is a compilation of the first three books in the "Emily" series by Katie MacAlister. I first read these books years ago when they were first published under Katie Maxwell. I really enjoyed them and come to find out later they we by one of my favorite authors!

Emily is an American teen that moves to England for a year with her family due to her dad's job. The stories are each told by Emily to her best friend, Dru, vie email. This sounds like it may make a confusion set up, but it actually works well.

The first book, The Year My Life went down the Loo, you really get the feeling that a teenager wrote the emails. Emily is a typical spoiled teenager. She isn't mean, just kind of oblivious to things. You do see grow up a bit from book to book, which is great.

I'm rereading the books now in the compilation and am on the third boo, What's French for Ewww. I'm enjoying the books as much now as I did the first time I read them. Yes these are "young adult" books but even adults will enjoy the silly antics that Emily seems to find herself in!

Thank you Katie for another good (great!) read!!!

I'll be honest, I don't often read YA books and while I had seen the title on Katie Mac's books I sorta passed over it because of the classification. Boy, did I mess up! These are are so much fun to read! I am so glad that I accepted the challenge to read the Compendium of the Emily books! Emily is such a great character and I will be willing to bet many will see themselves as teenagers in her, I know I did. From the adventures in a different country to trying to figure out boys and juggling long distant friendships I was thoroughly entertained with each book and I am very excited with the knowledge that there are adult Emily books on the way.

This is a collection of three really fun young adult novels following Emily and her adventures. True to Katie MacAlister form, Emily goes through a series of adventures in her European travels. I think one of the best things about this book is she manages to tell the story and keep things humorous and fast paced, while also keeping Emily realistic with her teenage drama! this is a must read for teens and adults who like young adult fiction!

Katie Macalister has never failed me. I started this compendium not sure what to expect but she delivered everything I've grown to love her for. Quick wit, strong female leads, handsome guys...although this is a teen novel, it kept me entertained the whole way through. I could just see me or my kids saying and doing some of the things she wrote. If you're looking to be able to just relax and laugh, this is your read! ENJOY!

A different Katie MacAlister book. Not sure I enjoy the format of reading e-mails from Emily as she goes through England, Scotland and Paris. Adventures, yes. But a bit less of the dry humor that I appreciate in Katie's other books. Interesting enough that I will probably get the next in the series.

I read these when they were originally published, and I just read them recently. I laughed out loud (disruptively in one case, be aware) many, many times. Totally appropriate for a teen girl, clean and funny!

I truly enjoyed the back & forth emails between Emily and her friend in Seattle. Emily is funny and dramatic. I was confused at first about who Brother is but once I realized it is a nick-name not a sibling designation it worked, weird but works.

This book had me laughing from the very beginning. I couldn't put my phone down. I also got a few weird looks because I would read while waiting for appointments and what not and I would bust out laughing.
