ROSS'S STORY Ransomed Jewels Book Two Ross Bennett, Marquess of Rainforth, hadn’t come to St. Stephen’s Hollow because he wanted friends. He’d turned his back on Society—just as they’d turned their backs on him. But anonymity was short-lived, because the mistress with whom he’d parted amicably five years earlier had borne him a child, a child he hadn’t known existed. Josephine Foley must protect the orphaned children at all costs. But when a known rake comes looking for his child, she has to stall, even though holding him at bay is the hardest thing she's ever done. Still, she must! Because the closer she comes to losing her heart to Ross, the closer she comes to being hanged.

Hero/ titled man Ross had guilt b/c his late father betrayed war secrets. I did not get the rationale for his guilt. His father made his own decision.
Heroine Josephine, easily angered, worked in an orphanage with insufficient food & clothing for the kids. Their "benefactor" gave them crumbs. Josie took part x 2yrs in a smuggling ring. With an agreement that her orphans would receive a portion of all smuggled goods sold. Josie rationalized this illegal activity as "cheaper" prices for goods. Huh? She later learned goods smuggled included opium! which she did not condone.
Jaded Moon: Ransomed Jewels Book 2 is by Laura Landon. This second book in the series takes place outside of London by the ocean. Ross Bennett had given his inheritance to his cousin after his Father had been found to have been a traitor to England. Ross wanted nothing to do with anything his Father had touched. As it was, Ross was reviled by Society as was his Father. Ross retreated to St. Stephen’s Hollow which he had inherited from his Mother. Here, he stayed separated from the “locals” and remained “inhospitable”. Sam Benedict, an agent for the government, came to see Ross and recruit him for a mission at St. Stephen’s Hollow. Someone was smuggling opium into England and it was being traced back to this area of the countryside where caves were there to house the smuggled goods. Since strangers would be easily recognized in this rural area, Sam asked Ross to do some spying for him. If he could help round up this ring of smugglers, it would go far in helping him overcome his Father’s ill deeds. As he was leaving, Sam handed Ross a letter from his solicitor. This was a letter which would change his entire world.
I enjoyed this but above each new chapter is the book title, the author and the title of the series and it jarred me out of the story every single time as well as being a leeetle bit ‘smug’ somehow.
Also, too much unattributed dialogue in places which made reading difficult.
However, the story had engaging characters and more than a touch of intrigue as well as a decent amount of tension.
Definitely one to keep.
3.5* rounded up to 4 for keeping me awake at night :)
I believe this is the first book I have read by this author and I think it won’t be the last. A great premise. An exciting story with action, adventure and enough romance to grab a reader... I truly enjoyed this
Almost clean. Barely a little detail in the bedroom. No cussing. I needed more in the ending. The emotional moments weren't as heart wrenching as they could have been, but still good. The storyline was good. Editing was great.
Ross Bennett, Marquess of Rainforth. He's Lord Rainforth living at St. Stephens Hollow. He for years lived in London and moved here recently. He had set up his previous mistress also in St. Stephens about five years ago along sending her a monthly check.
When he goes visit her he finds out she died in a carriage accident and had a child who was about four years old. He realized it must be his child. Who was taken to the local orphanage.
He goes to the orphanage to find his child. He meets Josephine (Josie) Foley) who helps take care of the children who mean so much to her. She hides his son Charlie from him, because he looks just like his Father, and considers him to have a bad reputation.
For some reason they both start to have feelings for each other, which both thought it can't be able to happen, he's royalty and she is not.
She lives at the Clythebrook Estate with Lady Clythebrook, since she was 13 years old. The Estate isn't being well cared for and the orphanage is lacking funds & donations to take of the children's need.
She gets asked to help to a local Lord, to let a ship bring in goods that will be sold by a local wealthy merchant, to hide them in tunnels beneath the orphanage. She agrees so there will be extra funds for orphanage.
There's so much more to this story that you need to read it. Many more characters, danger and possible love. Enjoy.
I am usually a big fan of Laura Landon books and read Book 1, Randsome Jewels. However, there were too many inconsistencies in Book 2. While wallowing in exile in the country, Marquess of Rainforth, Ross Bennett discovers he as a 4 yr. old son his last mistress kept secret. He goes to Sacred Hearts where he is being kept and Josephine Foley, a caretaker, refuses to acknowledge his son or give him to his father. How does a nobody get to deny a marquess the right to take his child? Also, Josephine's past experience as an orphan has caused her to be extremely bitter against nobility. She judges Ross by gossip she has heard and that fact that his son Charlie has been an orphan for four years. Josephine get involved with smugglers in order to help get money to help the children, but she is very naive because they use her to smuggle opium into England. Just like in Book 1, Ross gets shot, but we never find out who did it. Was is it the Vicar? Also would have like more interaction between Ross and his son Charlie. Was Josephine pregnant when Ross proposed? So many questions because there was no epilogue.
Very enjoyable Ross's father had betrayed his country, selling secrets in the Crimean war. Ross is given a chance to redeem himself, someone locally is smuggling opium helping to expose them will help restore the family name. His ex mistress had also lived locally, she had a son by him something Ross was unaware of, after her death he finds out that the child is in the local orphanage where he meets Josie. Born of a liason between a nobleman and her mother, Josie has no liking for the noblity and refuses his request for his child. They fall in love, but then betrayal, Ross is caught between his loyalty to his country or the woman he loves when he finds Josie is involved in the smuggling The characters are well drawn, believable, and likeable, I enjoyed the book immensely
This is the second book in the Ransomed Jewels series. There must be something wrong with my understanding because, so far, I can't work out where jewels come into it! Despite this, and the sorry fact that the author doesn't know the difference between 'affect' and 'effect', it was an enjoyable story with orphans and smugglers and a rake of a marquess! How will our heroine, Josie, get herself out of the predicament she finds herself in.
What a lovely story. The relationship between Josephine and Lord Ross is full of sparks and excitement, along with plot twists that will keep you turning the pages and not want to put the book down. Very enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. Josie annoyed me at first because she was making decisions based on her life and not the facts surrounding Ross! However this just proves how good the characterisation is in the book. The plot is interesting and again there are surprises along the way. I would gladly reread this book. Brilliant!
This was an engaging, page turning romance with action ,conflict, and suspense. I enjoyed reading it except for the sex scenes. Because of that issue I won't be reading any more other books.
This was the best story I've read in a long time (even though I guessed the villain early on). Liked the hero/rake very much and the heroine too. The storyline was believable and the book well written. Thoroughly recommended.
I am a fan of regency period romances. I don't willingly read Victorian era romances, but I found myself caught up into every moment of this storyline. Ross and Josie were skillfully created. The love scenes were fairly steamy. Good work!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters, I think they stuck to their personal convictions and with good reason as well. I thought the plot line was interesting Smugglers! The plot made quite a lot of sense actually.
I loved this book!! Held me spellbound from the very first page. Ross and Josie were ment for each other. It was a great read that I would recommend to any friend or foe.
Really enjoyed the story of Ross as he discovers his late mistress gave birth to a son. He meets Carrie who is in charge of the orphanage where his son is. Interesting to see how they fare together and the circumstances of how his son ended up at the orphanage
This is the first book I have read by this author, and I was more than thoroughly impressed. The story was exciting, the characters entertaining and the romance sweet and endearing. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work!
This story is really very good, I like stories with romance and intrigue in them, I was really hoping for an epilogue but it really is a great story and I honestly recommend this book to everyone, thank you for being a great writer!
Nothing special...dragged it too long. Kept reading to find out the ending but otherwise boring book. Both H and h wouldn't talk to each other about important things until the end.
Great storyline and awesome characters! Ross and Josie were perfect together right from the beginning. Very exciting full of drama and passion. Would have loved a extended ending.
I love the writing style of this author. Her characters are likeable and honorable. There is chemistry between the characters, and everything works out in the end. An HEA is a must for me.
