The Baxter Boys #5

Still Rattled

Rate this book
Only three things matter to Kelsey Fry: an envelope full of memories, a pink box full of hope, and a well-planned future, soon to be realized.

Alex Dosek knows that Kelsey needs more than the tattoo he gave her. She hoped to ink the memory of the daughter she gave up for adoption into her soul, but that wasn’t necessary. The memories were already there.

Who would have thought a house full of boys would be a refuge for Kelsey? The Baxter boys come to Kelsey’s rescue and all is well, but the past has a way of catching up with you, and Kelsey’s past reaches out with a phone call. The daughter she gave up for adoption is sick, and she needs something only Kelsey can give her.

It won’t be easy, but it will be necessary. Kelsey will look into the eyes of her daughter and then walk away, and take nothing with her but the letters she writes to her daughter on every holiday and every special occasion. In the evening, when she can’t sleep, she pours out her heart on paper.

When her daughter turns eighteen, Kelsey can reach out to her. Those are the rules. Not a moment before. But sometimes, the fates intervene. Or friends do. Call it what you will.

What an awesome love story. I like how the writer shared with her readers the love that was blossoming between Kelsey and Alex. The writer shares with the readers that when Alex and Kelsey are together it seems so natural and realistic. This makes the book more believable. I loved the timid pace of the book. The simplicity of the book is awesome. The writer didn’t go over bored on details or information. I enjoy how the writer just tells the story. I like how she stayed with the plot. The drama really enhanced the plot. I recommend this book.

This continues the story of Kelsey and Alex that started in the novella Rattled. After Alex made Kelsey's life difficult in high school, the two have now reconnected as Kelsey is about to graduate from college and Alex is launching his career as a tattoo artist. Having put their old misunderstandings aside, Alex wants to get to know Kelsey even better. Since Kelsey is on a tight budget and difficulties arise with her living situation at college, Alex and the rest of his friends, who are also Baxter Academy graduates, offer to let Kelsey live with them. It's a convenient but awkward situation for Kelsey, since she likes all the guys and is falling more in love with Alex all the time, but she hates being dependent on anyone. She just wants to get her student teaching position figured out and go on to be a music teacher.

The heartbreak of having to give up her daughter for adoption is always with Kelsey, but she has learned to deal with it by writing her thoughts and feelings in letters to her daughter that she hopes to send to her one day. The terms of the adoption mean that her daughter can't know anything about Kelsey until she turns 18. But out of the blue, Kelsey gets a call that her daughter is sick and tests need to be done to see if Kelsey can help. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help and possibly see her daughter. Can Kelsey deal with having to walk away again once this crisis is resolved?

The Baxter Boys and all their friends are supportive, but of course, mistakes are made in Alex and Kelsey's very new, uncertain relationship. It was great to see such a group of positive young people who have all been through tough times supporting each other and making great lives for themselves. I'm looking forward to more books in this series.

I read the first book (Rattled) and I absolutely loved it. Not only does this book include story 1 but it continues it and it is absolutely WONDERFUL. Fan of those in the arts? Read this book. Fan of tattoos? Read this book. Fan of second chances? Read this book. Seriously, this book has so much to it, so many wonderful layers but you don't even realize it when you're reading. Only as I'm sitting down to reflect over it do I appreciate the depth of the journey I shared. She sets up future books beautifully and you honestly walk away caring about these people who have created their own little family. The way that they care about passing their blessing along to others and supporting those who are following a similar path seriously moves the reader and touches the heart. At the end you get this little tidbit for the next book and it's the one you've been set up to want to read all through the book. Don't get me wrong, you don't feel like you're being set up, you just have this feeling of "yes!!" when you checkout the snippet for the next in the series.

I love Jane Charles and her writing. I like her historical romances and I enjoy her contemporary romances. This is another beautifully written story that I highly recommend you grab and read.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, but was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I became engrossed and before I knew it, it was done. Still Rattled (and Rattled) is a wonderful story of an independent woman reeling from emotional guilt, but not wanting to be saved, and an equally determined man who feels it’s his duty to do just that.

Including Rattled (the first book in the series) in this book is an added bonus, as the reader is up to date with events and doesn’t feel like something is missing. Overall, this was a true to life story that kept me thoroughly intrigued by its twists, turns and compelling heartache till the very end. I look for ward to reading more from Ms Charles.

Close to my heart. But not for the same reason.

This is a beautifully written story that you will not want to put down.
A young girl living on the streets doesn't have the home her baby needs.
She thinks she has done the right thing for her child, by putting her up for adoption.
Years later the child's family are trying to find her birth mother, to find out if she can save the child's life!

I really enjoyed Alex and Kelsey's story from enemies to friends. Where was the epilogue though?! I wanted an epilogue. All of the characters were well written. I was really hoping for more. I'm hoping the other novels in the series explain more of Kelsey and Alex's relationship. Oh and someone really needs to fix the grammer errors!

Beautiful

This is a wonderful continuation of this story about what Kelsey went through after giving up her little girl and meeting up with Alex from high school. Each of these characters have made something of themselves since being in the foster care system.

Alex and Kelsey hated each other in high school. Six years later, Kelsey walks in to his tattoo shop for a tattoo, and sparks still fly. However, after talking and getting to really know each other, different sparks fly.

I couldn't finish this book. I'm sorry but how many times do you have to remind the reader of what's happened previously?!? And the number of times that the f bomb is dropped is ridiculous!!! I didn't even make it to the halfway point...

Good

This is a good young adult romance that is more mature than most. Kelsey's story is heart wrenching. Alex's isn't much better. The way they meet again and come together grabbed me from the beginning. A very well written and well developed story.

This book follows on immediately from Rattled.
I received an ARC copy
Kelsey Fry & Alex Dosek go for a coffee after Alex has finished Kelsey’s tattoo but its Thanksgiving so the diner is full as it’s offering a great deal on a Thanksgiving meal. Alex invites Kelsey back to dinner at the brownstone he rents along with five other guys who also went to Baxters.
When they learn that she has an interview for a teaching job at Baxters Academy they all want to go with her
Who would have thought a house full of boys would become a refuge for Kelsey? The Baxter boys come to Kelsey’s rescue and all is well, but the past has a way of catching up with you, and Kelsey’s past reaches out with a phone call. The daughter she gave up for adoption is sick, and she needs something only Kelsey can give her

Alex & Kelsey find they are rapidly falling for each other & both relish not being alone.

However things don’t go smoothly, one of Kelsey’s flatmates is a complete snob but her comeuppance is so apt, her daughter becomes ill, her student teaching placement is withdrawn. All of these she takes in her stride until Alex tries to help.
Things also don’t go smoothly for Alex, when one of the joint owners of the tattoo parlour suffers a stroke.
This is a heart warming story & the other five guys in the house are wonderful, I hope they each get their story especially Dylan. I’d recommend reading Rattled first but this book could certainly stand alone. I loved the chemistry between Alex & Kelsey & the way the chapters were written from each ones perspective, something the author does really well. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

There aren't many authors that make me want to read a contemporary romance but Jane Charles is one of them. Still rattled continues the story of Alex and Kelsey that started in Rattled. Although you wouldn't have had to read that to start the story here.
Two twenty-somethings meet again after a having had a contentious relationship at Baxter Academy - a special High School for troubled youth. They meet in Rattled and this book continues as it grows into a friendship, a relationship and then love.
The road isn't always easy for the two for them but the book is filled with other friends from Baxter who are now Alex's roommates or friends. This is a story of how emotionally damaged teenagers can grow into loving, responsible adults 0 it is well worth the read.
