Ian Gibson (born 21 April 1939) is an Irish author and Hispanist known for his biographies of Antonio Machado, Salvador Dalí, Henry Spencer Ashbee, and particularly his work on Federico García Lorca, for which he won several awards, including the 1989 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for biography. His work, La represión nacionalista de Granada en 1936 y la muerte de Federico García Lorca (The nationalistic repression of Granada in 1936 and the death of Federico García Lorca) was banned in Spain under Franco.

Born into a Methodist Dublin family, he was educated at Newtown School in Waterford and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin. He became a professor of Spanish literature at Belfast and London universities before moving to Spain. His first novel, Viento del Sur (Wind of the South, 2001), written in Spanish, examines class, religion, family life, and public schools in British society through the fictitious autobiography of a character named John Hill, an English linguist and academic. It won favourable reviews in Spain.

Gibson has also worked in television on projects centering around his scholarly work in Spanish history, having served as a historical consultant and even acting in one historical drama.

He was granted a Spanish passport in 1984.

I would have given this biography 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that the author, Ian Gibson - who I love, had waited a few more years to write this or at least add new material to the book now. When he wrote this in the 80's, there were still too many holes in Lorca's life and much documentation had not yet come to light, and therefore, too many assumptions were made, such as: we can deduce, in all probability, perhaps, etc... I am sure Gibson filled in the blanks as best he could.

Having said that, it is quite a comprehensive biography of Federico Garcia Lorca, from his childhood days in La Vega and Granada to his university days in Madrid, where he met Dalí and Buñuel, his rise to fame and his tragic assassination by the Nationalist right wingers, who thought he was enemy numero uno, because he was gay and a leftist, (but never was he a communist; just a supporter of La Republica).

It did vividly bring back so many of the atrocities and horrors of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and all that led up to it. We also learn about Lorca's morbid fear of death and how, ironically, he was "led" to his own death by insisting on going back to his beloved Granada, though many of his friends (including Buñuel) advised him against it.

Not only was the life of the greatest Spanish poet and dramatist of all times cut so tragically short, but also the life of a "jongleur" in the truest sense of the word. His talents were not just limited for what he became famous, but included: prolific pianist, guitarist, singer of el "canto jondo" (a flamenco version of the blues), storyteller, painter and director.

Thank God there were fun, lighthearted moments, as when Lorca was truly happy in Cadaques with Dalí or organizing La Barraca, the traveling theater created under the short-lived Second Republic. But, like reading Don Quijote, the reader knows the ending will be tragic and bring one to tears.
Highly recommended for Lorca fans and those who want to immerse themselves in the Spain of the early 20th century. 4.5 stars.

This was really quite an amazing biography, especially with all the detail from so many sources. I really enjoyed reading it. However, I had to return it to the library before I could finish.

فدریکو به تاریخ ۵ ژوئن ۱۸۹۸ در دهکده Fonte Vacros در جلگه غرناطه ،چند کیلومتری شمال شرقی شهر گرانادا زاده شد در خانوداه‌ای که پدر یک خرده مالک مرفه و مادر فردی متشخص و فرهیخته بود. نخستین سالهای زندگی را در روستاهای غرناطه ؛ پایتخت باستانی اسپانیا، شهر افسانه‌های کولیان و آوازهای کهنه می‌گذراند. شاید از این روی و به خاطر بیماری فلج که تا ۴ سالگی با او بود و او را از بازیهای کودکانه بازداشت، فدریکوی کودک به داستان‌ها و ترانه‌های کولی رغبت فراوانی پیدا می‌کند، آنچنانکه زمزمه این آوازها را حتی پیش از سخن گفتن می‌آموزد. این فرهنگ شگرف اندلسی و اسپانیایی کولی است که در آینده در شعرش رنگ می‌گیرد. لورکا بدست مادر با موسیقی آشنا می‌شود و چنان در نواختن پیانو و گیتار پیشرفت می‌کند که آشنایانش او را از بزرگان آینده موسیقی اسپانیا می‌دانند، ولی درگذشت آموزگار پیانویش به سال ۱۹۱۶چنان تلخی عمیقی در او به جای می‌گذارد که دیگر موسیقی را پی نمی‌گیرد. هم‌زمان با فرا رسیدن سن تحصیل لورکا، خانوداه به گرانادا نقل مکان می‌کند و او تا زمان راهیابی به دانشگاه از آموزش پسندیده با طبقه اجتماعی اش برخوردار می‌شود .(در همین سالهاست که فدریکو موسیقی را فرا می‌گیرد.) ولی هر گز تحصیل در دانشگاه را به پایان نمی‌رساند، چه در دانشگاه گرانادا و چه در مادرید. باری در همین سالهاست که در Residencia de Etudiante مادرید – جایی برای پرورش نیروهایی با افکار لیبرالی ـ لورکا، شعرش را بر سر زبانها می‌اندازد و در همین دوره‌است که با نسل زرین فرهنگ اسپانیا آشنا می‌شود.

به سال ۱۹۲۰ نخستین نمایشنامه اش با نام «دوران نحس پروانه‌ها» (el malificio de la mariposa) را می‌نویسد و به صحنه می‌برد که با استقبال چندانی روبرو نمی‌شود. و سال بعد (۱۹۲۱)، «کتاب اشعار» (Libre de Poems) که نخستین مجموعه شعرش است را منتشر می‌کند. ۱۹۲۲ سالی است که با مانوئل دفایا جشنواره بی همتا کانته خوندو(Conte Jondo)، آمیزه‌ای از افسانه‌ها، آوازها و پایکوبیهای کولیان اسپانیا که می‌رفت در هیاهوی ابتذال آن سالهای فلامنکو به دست فراموشی سپرده شود، را برپا می‌کند .

لورکا در ۱۹۲۷ «ترانه‌ها (Canciones)» را منتشر می‌کند و نمایشنامه «ماریانا پیندا» (Mariana Pineda) را در ماه ژوئن همین سال به صحنه می‌برد و در بارسلونا نمایشگاهی از نقاشی‌هایش بر پا می‌شود. در ۱۹۲۸ محبوبترین کتابش، «ترانه‌های کولی» (Romancero Gitano) منتشر می‌شود. نشانی که بسیارانی آن را بهترین کار لورکا می‌دانند. مجموعه‌ای که شهرتی گسترده را برای فدریکو به ارمغان می‌آورد چنانکه لقب «شاعر کولی» را بر او می‌نهند.

شکل گیری هسته نمایشنامه «عروسی خون» با الهام از خبر قتل نیخار(Nijar) در روزرنامه‌ها، نیز به سال ۱۹۲۸ بر می‌گردد.

در تابستان ۱۹۲۹ شاعر به نیویورک سفر می‌کند و برای آموختن انگلیسی وارد دانشگاه کلمبیا می‌شود. در نیویورک است که لورکا به شعر سختش می‌رسد. به سرزنش از شهری با معماریهای مافوق آدمین، ریتم سرگیجه آور و هندسهٔ اندوهناک می‌رسد.

حاصل سفر نیویورک مجموعه اشعاری است با نام«شاعر در نیویورک» که در ۱۹۴۰ (پس از مرگ شاعر) منتشر می‌شود. واژه‌هایی که مملو از همدردی با سیاهان آمریکا است و اثر دیگری که نمایشنامه‌ای شعرگونه و ناتمام و کارایی گرفته از سفر شاعر به آمریکاست «مخاطب»Audience و یا به تعبیر گروهی دیگر «مردم»(people) نام دارد.

فدریکو، دربهار ۱۹۳۰ خسته از زندگی سیاه «هارلم» و ریشه‌های فولادی آسمان خراشهای نیویورک، در پی یک دعوت نامه جهت سخنرانی در «هاوانا» به آغوش سرزمینی که آنرا «جزیره‌ای زیبا با تلألو بی پایان آفتاب» می‌خواند، پناه می‌برد .شاید دوماه اقامت لورکا درکوبا و خو گرفتن دوباره‌اش با ترانه‌های بومی و تم اسپانیایی آن بود که سبب گشت تا شاعر به اندلس اش بازگردد. در همین سال است که نگارش «یرما» را آغاز می‌کند. با بازگشت به اسپانیا در خانه پدری (گرانادا) ساکن می‌شود و «مخاطب» را در جمع دوستانش می‌خواند و در زمستان «همسر حیرت آور» (la zapatero prodigiosa) را به صحنه می‌برد (در مادرید).

سال بعد (۱۹۳۱) «چنین که گذشت این ۵ سال» را می‌نویسد که تنها پس از مرگش یه صحنه می‌رود و پس از آن کتاب جدیدش به نام «ترانه‌های کانته خوندو» el poems del Conte Jondo، که در ادامه کار بزرگش در جشنواره کانته خوندو و «ترانه‌های کولی» است را منتشر می‌کند.


در ماه آوریل حکومت جمهوری در اسپانیا اعلام موجودیت می‌کند و این سبب می‌شود تا شاعر، که تئاتر را بی وقفه به روی مردم می‌گشاید، بیش از پیش موفق شود. چرا که در ۱۹۳۲ به نام کارگردان یک گروه تئاتر سیار (la barraca) که کسان آن را بازیگران آماتور پایه ریزی می‌دادند به شهرها و روستاهای اسپانیا می‌رود و آثار کلاسیک و ماندگاری چون کارهای لوپه دبگا) l’ope de vega (و کالدرون) Calderon) و ..را به اجرا در می‌آورد.

در زمستان همین سال «عروسی خون» را در جمع دوستانش می‌خواند و به سال ۱۹۳۳ آنرا به صحنه می‌برد(مادرید). اجرای این تراژدی با کامیابی و استقبال بی مانندی روبه رور می‌شود، و همچنین وقتی در همین سال شاهکارش را به آرژانتین می‌برد و در بوئینس آیرس به نمایش در می‌آورد، این کامیابی برای لورکا تکرار می‌شود.

This well researched biography of Spain's great twentieth century poet is perhaps most noteworthy as an act of restoration that refutes an insidious process of falsification. Here Ian Gibson has single-handedly recovered and preserved crucial facts about Lorca's politics, his sexuality and his execution by fascist forces so that posterity might have a truer picture of a remarkable man.

Although I can't recommend the movie Little Ashes highly enough, it is not based directly on the book but is rather what inspired me to read this biography. I recommend this book and, oh well, the movie too!

Ah... meu querido Federico, quantas palavras maravilhosas saíram da sua boca sagaz!  E apesar de sua morte violenta e a covardia de seus algozes, você se tornou imortal!

 

O biógrafo Ian Gibson fez uma pesquisa profunda sobre  o menestrel, poeta, desenhista, dramaturgo e andaluz de fibra.

 

Com fotos, imagens e uma narrativa fluida, o autor discorre sobre a vida do poeta espanhol, desde sua tenra idade em Granada,  suas viagens, suas amizades, seus desapontamentos e suas obras até chegar a sua morte cruel e prematura pelas mãos do odioso Franquismo.

This is probably the best biography I have read about the Spanish Garcia Lorca. It is well researched and well writtenand because of this I decided to re read Ian Gibson's version
In the past I have studied Lorca and some of his compatriots so I found the book both interesting and informative. The only criticism is that if a person is new to Lorca the book can be somewhat confusing particularly with all the names of friends and colleagues that surround him and the discussion of their works
This is more an acadaemic book rather then a book for the casual reader

Asombrosa obra donde no sólo se narra la vida de Federico García Lorca con una minuciosidad y detalle fuera de lo común. De manera paralela a la biografía se habla de la historia de España en la época de Lorca también con mucha minuciosidad y detalle.
Durante lustros vi este libro en una de las estanterías de casa de mis padres pensando que esos dos tomos serían un troncho infumable de más de 1100 páginas. Pero un buen día me dio por abrir el primer tomo y ya no pude parar. Imprescindible.

I didn't read all of it, as I was focusing on the parts I wanted for a project, but read a good third of it and it was good. The language is a bit clunky at times (maybe cause it was written quite a while ago) but in general easy to get through and with a ton of sources and quotes.

فدریکو گارسیا لورکا یکی از مشهورترین چهره های شعر اسپانیاست. شاعری که در بیشتر شعرها و نوشته هایش از مرگ می گوید، و طبق گفته ی دوستان و نزدیکانش هراس عجیبی از مرگ داشت.
در متن کتاب می خوانیم:
وقتی صحبت مرگ شد، خبرنگار تغییری آشکار در چهره و حالت لورکا دید. این تغییر حالت و چهره را دالی و بونوئل نیز در لورکا شهادت داده اند. ناگهان ارتباطش با جمع می گسست و در خود فرو می ریخت، چنان که گویی اصلا حضور ندارد. وقتی به خود آمد از اکراه خود سخن گفت در دراز کشیدن با کفش در بستر، این منظره او را یاد مرگ می انداخت، یاد مردگانی که در بچگی در فوئنته واکروس دیده بود. آنها را در بهترین لباسشان، لباس مخصوص روزهای یکشنبه روی تخت می خواباندند و کفش نو به پایشان می کردند. کفش ها و پاها وقتی بی حرکتند ظاهر کریه مرگ را دارند.
یکی از بهترین زندگینامه هایی بود که تا حالا خوندم. توضیح و تفسیر حالات و اوضاع شاعر و فضای فکری او در زمان نگاشتن آثارش، مخصوصا که قبلا تئاتر یرما رو با اجرای یک گروه تئاتر دیده بودم و شاید اون موقع خیلی عادی بهش نگاه کردم یک داستان عامیانه! اما با تفسیر و پیشینه ی خلق اثر متوجه شدم که یرما داستانی نیست که به همین سادگی ازش گذشت.
لورکا در جریان اعدام هایی که در زمان فرانکو صورت میگیره کشته میشه و چون تیرباران ها به صورت دسته جمعی صورت می گرفت و در همون محل کشته ها رو دفن می کردن هیچ وقت جسد لورکا پیدا نشد و جالبه که یکی از سروده هاش در واقع شبیه مرگ خودشه

فهمیدم که مرا کشته اند
کافه ها را گشته بودند به خاطر من
گورستان ها را و کلیساها را
از سر کنجکاوی بشکه ها و گنجه ها را گشوده بودند

A really in depth look at Lorca’s life. It includes lots of details about Lorca’s homosexuality and his relationship with Dali (my two personal interests in his life). HOWEVER, this book could have been a lot shorter if it didn’t go off into life histories of people like Lorca’s school teachers: unnecessary!!
