From Coping to Thriving: How to Turn Self-Care Into a Way of Life

Rate this book
Self-care is a necessary part of being alive, not something we resort to when we’re at our most burned out, vulnerable and desperate.

It’s is “the right and responsibility to take care of your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being” – Pauline Salvucci

From Coping to Thriving will show you exactly how to do just that.

This is a comprehensive guide to making self-care part of your everyday life. With a balance between practical suggestions, coaching-style questions and psychological groundwork, From Coping to Thriving is designed to give you the self-knowledge and awareness you need to start integrating self-care into your life, instead of integrating self-care around your life.

Not only does the book contain hundreds of useful tips and ideas to get you going, it will also take you deeper into related topics like habit-formation, coping strategies and dealing with resistance to self-care.

SECTION 1: Laying the Foundation

We start by defining what self-care actually is, why it’s important and why it’s not this optional extra maybe-if-I-can-afford-it-and-my-boss-gives-me-an-afternoon-off-at-some-point situation.

In this section, we get to the heart of the matter. We talk about:
* Obstacles to self-care
* Coping strategies vs. genuine self-care
* Long-term vs. short-term self-care
* Creating sustainable habits
* What to do when you feel resistance to self-care
* How to engage in regular self-care without resorting to ‘should’-ing yourself.

SECTION 2: Starting with the Present

Then, we’ll take a good, in-depth look at where you are with your coping mechanisms and self-care right now.

Think lots of thought-provoking questions, self-examination and a good healthy dose of awareness. We’ll also start thinking about the concept of needs and how they fundamentally shape our self-care.

SECTION 3: Self-Care Essentials

This is where we start putting all the theory we’ve discussed into practice. “Self-Care Essentials” looks at the must-haves of self-care. These things are the foundations of a need-meeting self-care practice and will set you up to be the best version of yourself.

SECTION 4: Nurturing the Body

Building on the self-care foundations from Section 3, this section includes suggestions that revolve around physical self-care. Here, you’ll find visualisations, ideas and more that, quite literally, move yourself towards self-care.

SECTION 5: Nurturing the Mind

The final section of the book focuses on self-care suggestions that nurture us mentally and emotionally. In this section, you’ll find ideas an introduction to concepts like Non-Violent Communication, practices like meditation and a variety of other activities you can add to your self-care toolkit.

Self-care has become increasingly important to me over the past several months, as I've been dealing with (and continue to deal with) a lot of health challenges. I've had to truly learn what it means to put myself and my health first - something that's very difficult, when you veer towards a Type A personality and want to be able to do all of the things perfectly all of the time.

I struggled with permission. Feeling worthy and deserving of having my needs looked after.

from coping to thriving From Coping to Thriving: How to Turn Self-care into a Way of Life by Hannah Braime became an invaluable guide and companion during that journey. I read it slowly over almost 4 months, a little bit each day. Taking small steps, one at a time, while figuring out both what my needs are - and how to meet them.

One of the more difficult things to come to terms with was realizing that self-care isn't something you can check off your list and be done with - you have to start over every day. But that's also the beauty of it, that you get to start over every day and work on becoming truly proficient at looking after yourself - which in the end will enable you to be the "best" you.
At its essence, it's very core, self-care is about identifying and meeting your needs.

Braime guides you gently and with compassion through why self-care is so important - and why we might resist it. Teaches about the difference between coping strategies, short-term self-care and long-term self-care. She covers the essentials of self-care such as sleep, exercise and food and shares an abundance of suggestions to try out.

I truly believe that self-care is (or at least should be) of paramount importance to all of us - even if we often don't realize it, until we're in a situation where we desperately need it. If you're looking for a place to get started I heartily recommend From Coping to Thriving: How to Turn Self-care into a Way of Life.

A lot of famous humans have said the powerful phrase, "know thyself" and to achieve such a profound endeavor takes work, various tools sets, and compassionate guidance. This book is one of the tool sets and this author is certainly a qualified compassionate guide.

I am a fan of fundamentals and clear instruction and so I am a fan of this book. In addition I am no where near wealthy and have neglected some of those extensional needs because of my perceived lack of time and money. Two barriers this book addresses with authority. "Eighty to ninety percent of self-care is an inside job" -Hannah Braime.

This read was timely and indeed aided my much needed shift in perspective.

Goed en praktisch boek over zelfzorg. De meeste tools en tips kende ik al, maar toch nog hier en daar kleine nuttige dingetjes bijgeleerd.

Not the best book by itself, but I love this author's overall body of work (including her website with blog posts and videos in this). She provides so many great resources on journaling to improve self-awareness. This book did provide a great comparison between "self-care" and "coping mechanisms" that I think is so important in a world where the term "self-care" is becoming very overused for marketing purposes.
