Red Oleanders
Red Oleanders, a powerful and moving play, is the story of Nandini, a girl who recognises no social barriers and taboos and who disregards them in her search for happiness.
Nandini is one of those individuals who bring out the best in human nature. Entering a town where men are enslaved to mine gold, she makes them aware of their bondage and creates in them a desire to be free.
Her symbol, the red oleander, can be variously interpreted as frailty or as the red badge of courage. But Nandini escapes being defined as just a symbol. The tremendous verve with which Tagore invests her, makes her a real living personality, and her death is actually a rebirth for the gold diggers. - from the back cover

About the author
Rabindranath Tagore
2,743 books4,399 followersAwarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."
Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

Before you hastily rush to Amazon and add this to your cart because: a) It's a play; (b) It's by Tagore—hear me out! Red Oleanders isn't for everybody!
Indeed just a scroll in the Goodreads review section will tell you, people disliked it more than they liked it and reason for that is:
1. It's too abrupt;
2. There are no cues to when one actor enters and what the setting is;
3.It's supposed to be a One Act Play but that seems like a mistake instead of a deliberation;
4. It makes NO BLOODY SENSE!
Well, that's what an average review on Goodreads will tell you. However, what they don't tell you is: This is the world of Abstract, baby!
Does Waiting for Godot make sense? Do you try to fathom what it means? If not, why not? Because that's the beauty of it!
What, then, makes you look for meaning in Red Oleanders? What is Nandini? She could be a person, a witch, a wave, a revolution. She could be the whole wave of Communism for all she's worth—the play was written in 1925, for Heaven's sake!
What is Ranjan? An inspiration, an idea, the spirit of revolution, a martyr or a lover.
You can't read this play with a single idea in mind! It belittles religion, preaches truth and beauty, mocks the system, laughs at the hollowness of organisation and law and is at once political, spiritual, romantic and revolutionary.
It's so simple and yet so poignant, with so many layers to it—much like a red oleander flower!
My advice to you: Don't read it if you like to be led by the hand and interpret exactly what the author wants you to interpret.
This play is all about reading between the lines! And you're welcome to interpret it exactly the way you like, with just the very themes it inspires in your mind!

I am confused about the way the play has been presented. Tagore's expressions are immense but the way the story proceeds could not be handled by me.

I LOVED how much the emotional aspects of this were directly tied to nature and outside forces. I think the parallels between how we feel towards those parts of nature really adds another layer to how we feel towards the characters. I was impressed with how Tagore could take such a raw emotion like Fear and translate it to the page. But at the same time give it such a sense of beauty that I wasn't expecting.

The central character Nandini is a lie, a false portrayal of womanhood as well as of humanity, who is made famous for her childish spontaneity, attributions of unquestioned simplicity which is actually possible only in cases of mental retardation. Such a woman being desired by all grown up men at different levels portrays a designed conformity to patriarchal norms for beauty, power, and excellence, which is non threatening to men. The play not even challenges any institutional learning. The choice of creating Nandini is such way stands for unquestioned self acceptance of the protagonist which is practically the foreclosure of human development. The character is also an impossible mean for any change, revolution be a distant dream. The play neither does justice to men, not to women, or to revolution. The play could not handle womanhood and took shelter in the defense of denial by making the character of Nandini totally fake. The play is an intellectual cheat for me.

The first play of Tagore I ever read. I was young, perhaps 14 when I read it. It engaged me, but went completely over my head. Upon re reading it many years later, I was struck by the beautiful metaphors used to tell the story.

Awesome read.

But can blocks of gold ever answer to the swinging rhythm of your arms in the same way as fields of corn? Are you not afraid, King, of handling the dead wealth of the earth?
PHAGULAL: Shall we be able to win through?
KING: We shall at least be able to die!
this is an extremely abstract play, but to understand the one thing it wants to drive home is not difficult: tagore uses a great deal of his beautiful prose to tell you the cause of nandini in the narrative; her figure in yakshapuri, why exactly it is necessary that she resides there, why she must be considered a "beauty," — a startling light, a bird perching on a lonely branch, a tiny blade of grass, and two of my personal favorite descriptors: the king's "The rhythm that lightens the enormous weight of matter," and bishu's "Waker of my grief." at first i grew tired of the men describing nandini as these, while some of the only women we meet consider her as a witch and a corruptor. if this had not ended the way that it did i would still consider this a big remiss; though im sure it's intentional so the term might be inappropriate. this truly is what the play was — about nandini being the waker of everybody's grief. an escape from tyranny, a reflection of power and struggle and greed, a reminder that the beauty that we speak of is no less than love, taking the form of nandini, which can and will serve as hope even in the darkest of places; or that we can have every material wealth in the world and still be parched, unless we give happiness a chance. still a very timely read.
although the scenes can cause confusion due to the lack of action cues, i enjoyed it more than i thought i would. the prose is gorgeous and reads very easily, if just read on its own and without the surrounding context. there's so much of the world in which this takes place left unexplored, some scenes you can lose track of because tagore apparently did not care for having clear transitions between different conversations, which is troubling because this is a play, and even if this is a one-act play meaning there is obviously just a single setting, it's very vaguely described. i am fond of abstraction, though, and ive grown used to it, so i consider this an enjoyable read. it's even unexpectedly touching. im looking back at it very well now, which wasn't the case after i finished. i gave my notes a revisit. looking forward to reading more of tagore in the future

Points that I found interesting in this play is how Tagore uses various characters to illustrate qualities of humanity, the use of class distrust and the symbolic elements. At the end, when the curtain falls, I was both confused and grateful to be done.
Interesting quotes:
Bishu: "I know the atmosphere of this place breeds contempt for beauty. There must be beauty even in hell; but nobody there can understand it, that's their cruellest punishment." p39
Bishu: "Man despises the broken pot of his own creation more than the withered leaf fallen from a tree." p46
Professor: "It's no use getting annoyed with a principle. Principles are neither good nor bad. That which happens does happen. To go against it, is to knock your head against the law of being." p112

Nandini is the spirit of liberation and Ranjan is the spirit of life. The play set in the gold mines of Yaksha Town portrays exploitation, sub-human existence and the tyranny of safety. The death of Ranjan liberates the King, a symbol of suppressed human potential, from the Governors and sparks the revolution of the diggers. Tagore's writing makes you experience every scene and you have to find which character you are - are you Bishu, Phagulal or Chandra?

In a town infested with greed and exploitation, Nandini, the protagonist of the play, proves that the highest expression of life is in love, which she manifests for her beloved Ranjan. Although strong in its ideas and symbols, the overall narrative felt weak and, at times, abrupt. The play was translated into English by the great master himself.

Deceptively simple
Reminds me of Waiting for Godot or Come and Go in that it's premise and execution are simplistic, but there's a whole ocean of depth. Strangely heartstring-pulling and thought-provoking.

Read only the bengali version. Only Bengalis can get the essence and feel the depth of this literature. The best!! The best work of Tagore!! Don't see other reviews who don't know nothing about literature and philosophy. Go, read and enjoy this masterpiece!!

One of my favourite dramas mainly because it breaks the constraints that social barriers hold while dealing with society in a very eco-feminist way.
