Kyle had asked Liane to marry him not once, but twice, which at least should have argued sincerity on his part. Or, perhaps it was just determination-- if he was serious, wouldn't he have told her that he loved her?
Seven years ago, Liane would have had no doubts. But then their affair had ended in bitterness and anguish, and she hadn't seen Kyle since. So how could she be certain that he wasn't just out to get his revenge?
I dislike it when H dangles an OW during his courtship of the h but I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT when he does so AFTER his marriage to the h. The disrespect of shoving your ex-girlfriend-now-secretary down your wife's throat, inviting her for a week's stay without any warning to your wife, and then letting her smugly monopolize you for the duration, is absolutely irredeemable, in my book.
Plus, when his wife finally confronted him about kissing his ex-girlfriend while she was a guest in their home, he first adamantly denied it. Then, when she told him when and where and that she actually saw them kissing, he immediately was like: "Oh that kiss? It was just a friendly kiss goodbye." I wouldn't trust this guy for a minute when his lies roll so smoothly off his tongue.

If misunderstandings are your thing, here is a story for you. The stable-boy hero and the heiress heroine had a sexual relationship when she was 17. Their relationship was exposed after the heroine slipped and fell, knocking herself out. At the hospital, they discovered she was pregnant. Grampy banished the H and his father and the heroine never saw him again. She miscarried a few days later.
Fast forward seven years, Grampy made bad investments and now the farm and vineyards are being sold to an anonymous buyer.
Can you guess who?
I'll bet you can!
It's the hero - full of money and spite. Heroine and her Grampy move to a small house at the edge of their old estate. Heroine has a job at a winery, but we don't hear much about it since the hero is pursuing the heroine for reasons of his own. Heroine thinks he wants revenge, but hero never tells her his motivations. (It's love, btw)
The heroine refuses to marry him (he asks several times) and then she has to come crawling back when the hero threatens to build a mall/small shopping center right next to their little house. It will mess up Grampy's view where he can watch the estate and pretend it's still his. Hero won't build the mall if heroine marries him.
There is a spanner in the works right before the wedding when the hero finds out the heroine miscarried. (He heard it from someone else) And then after their marriage, there is another spanner in the form of a last-minute OW, the hero's secretary. Since the H/h never tell each other anything the heroine assumes the worst. Their differences are only resolved after the H rescues Grampy from a fire and the heroine buys new lingerie to seduce the hero and to tell him she's pregnant.
I think my biggest problem with this story is that the H/h never say what's on their mind and that's really the only thing driving the conflict. Plus Grampy wasn't worth all the angst. An average vintage story, I guess.
Very good read. The man is smitten and I love that in a Harlequin book.
He has loved her ever since he was the stable boy of her grandfather and they had a secret romance. After her grandfather found out about the romance, he beat him so hard that he still has scars on his back and he threw him and his dad out. Now after 7 years he came back to buy her grandfather’s house and to marry her.
He is basically very sweet to her, considering everything she and her grandpa have done to him 7 years ago. She is the usual ignorant woman who can’t see all the love signs he is sending her and who thinks he is doing everything out of revenge.
Nice love scenes. Rosemary Carter is an excellent writer. The reason I don’t give it 5 stars, but 4 is because he shoves his ex-girlfriend who is now his secretary down her throat after they’re married and because her grandfather never said sorry to him for what he had done to him 7 years before. Her grandpa gets away with it too easy.

A second chance romance, between two people torn from each other, with half truths and secrets stuck between them.
This is their journey to happily ever after as they overcome the obstacles. It is a rocky journey with the two main characters both being strong, stubborn.
not bad in my opinion...but in terms of reality i couldn't help feeling that the hero was, infact, burning for revenge and had an inferiority complex (as there happens to be a classs difference between the mcs in the beginning).
