Twin Falls pathologist Toni Day is on a Caribbean cruise with her husband and parents when she is jerked out of a peaceful slumber by a horrific scream. After several unsuccessful attempts to reclaim sleep, Toni heads to the ship's deck to read. But shortly after the sun rises, everything changes when a mangled body plummets from the roof into the pool next to her. Rather than flee in horror, Toni teams up with her stepfather, Nigel, and Scotland Yard to investigate the murder, despite resistance from the captain and the Royal Barbados Police. With just three days left in the cruise, Toni and Nigel must work fast, especially when two more bodies are discovered and a crew member is fatally injured. As Toni delves into the histories of crew members, she uncovers mysterious connections that lead back nearly three decades. Finally, with only one night remaining, Toni and Nigel must set a trap in a last ditch attempt to find the killer before one of them becomes the final victim. Exceptional realism that only comes from personal, hands-on experience. Munro writes with captivating flair, and her story line is believable and realistic. --Charline Ratcliff for Rebecca's Reads Munro's story is a roller-coaster ride of suspense and intrigue, with twists and turns that will entertain a lover of mysteries and forensic crime novels for hours. --The US Review of Books If this is your first Toni Day novel, you'll want to go back and start the series from the beginning. --BlueInk Reviews
I liked Jane Bennett Munro's previous Toni Day murder mystery sufficiently that I decided to read the next book in the series, The Body on the Lido Deck: A Toni Day Mystery. I've been on enough ocean cruises to appreciate the Caribbean setting, and as in the prequel, the action starts up immediately. Like before, I was fine with all the medical terminology, but I also wasn't so fine with the large cast of characters. New victims and suspects kept appearing, nearly all of whom had relationships with each other that weren't revealed until later. While the fast paced plot eventually made sense, I sometimes lost track of who did what to whom and had to reread earlier chapters to jog my memory. I advise readers to take careful notes.
Even though this author has promise, I am not a huge fan of medical procedure so did not enjoy it as much as many other books I've read. I also did not like reading about the way the main character's family kept constantly telling her to mind her own business. The premise for the book is both intriguing and chilling so any reader who likes those things I did not enjoy is likely to enjoy it.
The Body on The Lido Deck is a dazzling mystery that lures readers to its depth. For fans of CSI this is definitely up your alley. There's a lot of dead body language that some might not like but goes with the territory when dealing with dead bodies. The main character, Toni Day, is very blunt. Straight forward kind of person. Her habit it to say or question things...and it may come of as rude. However, in her line of work, she has to be that way. In this particular novel, Toni was traveling on vacation with her husband and parents. As usual she finds a murder case. Except this one almost lands directly into her lap. There are plenty of suspects and as they case builds it's still hard to guess who done it. I loved the suspense and intrigue created perfectly by this writer. I have never before today, read a book by Jane Bennett Munro. After reading this tale, I have to say that I am super happy I did read it. It will keep readers questing and entertained. So many possibilities and few leads. Evidence goes missing and the main character gets into more dangerous situations as the book unfolds. Overall, I loved it. Highly recommend The Body on The Lido Deck to readers everywhere.
I love this mystery! It was a lot of fun to read, and I especially enjoyed the setting on a cruise ship. Throughout the book, there was tons of background about how a cruise ship works, and there were plenty of details about all the amenities you can get on a cruise, as much food and drink as you want, and entertaining shows, not to mention the numerous stops to exotic locations. It made me want to go on a cruise for sure. Besides the murders in the book, of course. When a performer is graphically killed in the closure of the roof over the lido deck...causing her head to land in the pool and the body practically next to Dr. Toni Day....the doctor can't help but start investigating what happened to the girl. It was a total mystery that kept me guessing until the last pages of the book....there were several people who could have done the killing, and it makes for a suspenseful book that keeps the reader going until the end. I enjoyed trying to figure it out. Looking forward to more by this author.
The Body on the Lido Deck by Jane Bennett Munro is a good "Who Done It" mystery. I found it quite engaging most of the time. There were a couple of parts that I felt went by a bit slow. That being said I kept turning the pages because I was fully entranced in the mystery of the Lido Deck. There were a lot of twists and turns and the book keeps you guessing for a lot of the book. I loved the medical aspects of the book too. I liked some of the characters a lot, others not so much, and then there were the ones I detested as well. There was a good cast of unique characters. I really liked Toni she was tenacious and didn't back down when everything went awry. This is the first Toni Day Mystery that I have read and I would love to read the others as well. I enjoyed Ms. Munro's writing and will definitely be looking into her other books. I would recommend The Body on the Lido Deck to lovers of mystery thrillers.
A fast paced, edge of your seat, keep you guessing murder mystery. I was hooked from the first page. This book has twists and turns at every chapter. You may think you know who the murderer is, but you have no idea..... Toni Day, a forensic pathologist vacationing with her husband, mother and step father, stumbles upon a dead body and a murder mystery at sea. Toni is not the type of person to let something go, especially something as huge as a murder. When the Evidence disappears, the mystery is only beginning. Toni and her family dive deep into the suspects and get deeply involved. How many people are involved? Is the captain involved? So many questions..... this book had me involved from beginning to end. I thought I had it figured out, then another twist, another murder. Very action packed, very good. I definately recommend this book for a good murder/ mystery read.
I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s This is the first book of Jane Bennett Munro's that I have read and she is now going on my list of favorite authors. I felt like I was right there with the characters in the book. I could almost feel the ocean spray on my face. The characters are great, the story is intriguing and I had a hard time putting the book down to get other things accomplished. I read these books to try to figure out who the culprit is and I was kept guessing almost the whole time. I highly recommend giving this book a try and you won't be disappointed!
Wow...This Toni Day whodunnit comes at you from the first page. Somewhat reminiscent of the Ms Marple mysteries, this one finds our heroine on a cruise in the Caribbean.
The storyline keeps you guessing until the end. The characters are downright cagey-- a whole shipload of possible suspects. The full blown descriptions of good, drink, and locales place you/-the reader--on board with Dr Toni Day.
Pack up your Dramamine and deck shoes while you cruise the seas with Dr Toni Day. A really fun read! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.)
The Body on the Lido Deck: A Toni Day Mystery (Kindle Edition) Jane Bennett Munro A fast paced semi forensics novel that draws you in from page 1. A slightly unusual story line reminiscent of Agatha Christy, keeps you guessing to the end. The story flows well and the writing is excellent, making this book a pleasure to read. *** I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s. ***
