The Dialogue in Hell between Machiavelli and Montesquieu: Humanitarian Despotism And The Conditions Of Modern Tyranny
The Dialogue in Hell between Montesquieu and Machiavelli is the source of the world's most infamous literary forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion . John Waggoner's superb translation of and commentary on Joly's Dialogue ―the first faithful translation in English―seeks not only to update the sordid legacy of the Protocols but to redeem Joly's original work for serious study in its own right, rather than through the lens of antisemitism. Waggoner's work vindicates a man who was neither an antisemite nor a supporter of the kind of tyrannical politics the Protocols subsequently served and presents Maurice Joly, once much maligned and too long ignored, as one of the nineteenth century's foremost political thinkers.

Montesquieu (Joly) hablándole a Maquiavelo (Napoleón III).

Plagiarized to create one of the most infamous forgeries in history. Joly’s 1864 critique of modern democracy susses out ways by which the will of the people can be exploited to despotic ends.
With seemingly preternatural foresight, Joly predicts numerous means of mass tragedy in the 20th century. There is, of course, a cruel irony in the unwilling role Joly’s “dialogue” played in these events.
When read in companion with “the protocols”, they demonstrate how truth can provide the source material for lies.

It surprises me the amount of Spanish speakers that have read this book in comparison with English Speakers.

I have to be sincere, at the end of the book I made a little smile because it was a quick redemption, in other ways they were magnificent of their works, the book was covered with simultaneous citations of others papers of their own. In my opinion, it is a really good book for accountants, lawyers and politicians.

every time an institution we think preserves democracy is forwarded, Machiavelli uses it to make a dictatorship. Really disturbing.

August 4, 2022Was I among those whom one saw change with
fortune? The Medicis' torturers knew to come after me, following the fall of Soderini. Elevated along
with liberty, I succumbed with it; I lived in banishment without the glance of a prince deigning to turn
towards me. I died poor and forgotten. This was my life and these were my crimes that won me the
ingratitude of my party, the hatred of posterity. The heavens, perhaps, will be more just towards me.
Montesquieu: I know all this, Machiavelli, and this is why I have never been able to comprehend how
the Florentine patriot, how the servant of a Republic, was made to be the founder of the somber school
that has given you, as disciples, all the crowned heads, but that is proper to justify tyranny's greatest
crimes.

This was my first introduction to Montesquieu. I learned a lot about him and his thought process. It would have been good to read a book about Montesquieu or a book he wrote beforehand. It is very philosophical and politically complex. I like it but its not for everyone.
