I’ve purchased a ton of Chinese language learning books over the years, I have to say that although I was familiar with 85% of the material in this book, it served as a nice refreshing review of things I had learned and an introduction to some words and patterns that had escaped my notice over the years. The most important aspect of this book is that it’s Chinese that is useful here in Taiwan. The pronunciation of the speakers on the audio files is pleasant to hear not grating and harsh like speakers from mainland China.
It's good. Some of the chapters were fun, others felt like a bit of slog (though I suppose that is to be expected). I feel like some of the questions in both the workbook and textbook were just a bit more difficult than they need to be. Also wish there was an answer key. But overall it's a FANTASTIC book. I still stand by this being probably the best series to learn Taiwanese Mandarin. Looking forward to starting book 4. Hopefully I will have time finish it faster than I did this one.
The workbook exercises are much lower quality than volumes 2 & 3, and some chapters (like chapter 12) are bafflingly specific. However, there’s no other option for studying Chinese in Taiwan.
