Weaving: Methods, Patterns, and Traditions of the Oldest Art

Rate this book
In all early cultures, weaving represented the image of creation. In this beautiful book, Martin presents the history, folklore, and techniques of weaving through various cultures. She explains and illustrates the three basic weave structures-plain weave, twills, and satins-along with many famous weaving patterns. Traditions of dyeing, fiber preparation, and spinning are introduced along with the rich legacy of myths and legends they have engendered. Diagrams illustrate the construction of various looms, from the simple backstrap loom to the complex and revolutionary Jacquard loom. For anyone who has ever knitted, sewn, or woven, this book is a treasure.

Pocket book with a mini history, diagrams and explanations of different types of weaving and textiles. A useful introduction to a fascinating topic. Each double page has text on one side and black and white diagrams on the other.

The line drawings are really lovely, and are the best part of this book. However, some of the historical statements are suspect or incorrect and I question that they were all researched. The book is billed as a brief history, but some stories seem to be added just for entertainment and not to convey real information.

A great book introducing the concepts of weaving, and explaining the basics with reference to the different regions and legends that surround it. A nice background book, nothing technique related but really rather delightful
