Hired to cater a fitness event in the small town of Fall River, bakery owner Tia Bliss is surprised that the fitness gurus wanted a tasty treat. While she is busy supplying the event with her famous cupcakes, the affair however is suddenly rocked when at its conclusion the dead body of a young woman is found.
Upon further investigation Tia realizes the woman Natalie Evans, is one of two women she overheard in a heated argument earlier. But that's only the beginning, this investigation of the vicious and heinous crime concludes in just 48 hours. Which is exactly how much time Tia has to put her 'sleuthing mind' to work. In order to catch the guilty party before they are out of justices reach for good.
"The two were almost mirror images of each other with just a few differences. Even though they were twins, you had to look a little closely to see the similarities."
I liked the fact that our heroine was black. But it's like someone tried to make a colorblind mystery and it's not good. The plot was very simplistic and it was as if those sisters were the only blacks in the town. The story ended so suddenly and really made no sense! Why the second victim? The questioning tactics of the main character were so clumsy and over the top they were laughable. I hope that if there is another installment that the story improves. If the author is AA, write what you know. If not, please just don't!
I could list a million faults and criticisms but towards the end, with an off-duty police officer, our intrepid heroine straight up asks "do you have a motive for killing [redacted]?" Why??? How are you not being dragged away for spooking suspects? Would this maybe not panic the killer? Would this maybe not end up with more people being killed? I don't know. The book doesn't care.
Not good. Far too many premises that simply don’t make sense —the twins description has been listed here by another reviewer. Additionally, Page overuses adverbs and adjectives; is ageist in her description of Simone; is unrealistic — Tia, a baker, keeps a small dog in her kitchen; and it is full of unnecessary information that plays no part in the story. To be frank, I found it inane.
I liked it because it kept my interest and it wasn't boring. Yes, it was silly and not very realistic but the author's writing style was at least warm and engaging and so were the characters. However, while the mystery was quite intriguing, the end was awful. So lame and a huge letdown. For that, I'm giving it one star. A pity because I did quite enjoy reading it up to that point.
Why so much body shaming? There was so much unnecessary negativity toward other women. It’s hard to find a good woman detective story and when I finally do it’s filled with woman on woman shaming. Just a bummer
This was bad and boring. First off, there was so much unnecessary body shaming and secondly, the case was just boring. The ending was abrupt and the fact that a detective off duty would team up with a random bakery owner to question suspects is ridiculous
Grammatical errors apart, the story has a few good moments and some interesting characters, but can leave with an empty feeling reaching the end. A bit disappointing.
I'm getting more into murder mystery and thriller, this was a good quick read to start. The middle got really juicy and the end completely shocked me. Gonna probably read more of this series.
Good, unrealized potential. I love the idea of twin food entrepreneurs solving murders. Know it's a novella, but a little more length is needed for better character development.
Loved it! Nice fresh approach to a culinary cozy. The plot was good as were the sleuthing skills and the characters were well rounded. Also don't be put off that it is fairly short - there is nothing missing from this. Can getting fit kill you? A really enjoyable read and it made a nice change to have a coloured heroine (and this wasn't played up too much - just mentioned as a fact). Highly recommended
