The Peaceful Pill Handbook is the controversial, ground-breaking new book from Australian end-of-life physician Dr Philip Nitschke. The Peaceful Pill Handbook for the first time offers a comparative analysis of end of life approaches comparing the peacefulness and reliability of methods such as the purchase of Pentobartibal Sodium (Nembutal) in Mexico, the manufacture of the homemade Peaceful Pill, the use of Helium and Exit bag, the prescription drug Propoxyphene, and the Swiss option offered by the Dignitas service in Zurich. Currently subject to a censorship hearing in Australia and New Zealand, The Peaceful Pill Handbook offers a succinct, scientifically-grounded guide to end-of-life options, voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.
Philip Nitschke is an Australian humanist, author, former physician, and founder and director of the pro-euthanasia group Exit International. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_...
I started reading "The Peaceful Pill Handbook" by Philip Nitschke and Fiona Stewart. And had issues right from the introduction. Not only I'm against physician-assisted suicide (in terms of medical oaths and the impact on the doctor's psychology such a practice would have, and his ability to carry out his normal duties afterwards), I didn't like the idea of restricting the option of dying with dignity only to terminal ill people. I believe the right to live and the right to die are inseparable and given to all the people.
An informative book aimed almost exclusively at the terminally ill although does include the elderly wishing to end their lives with dignity. My only gripe was that it only really covers medicine which is out of reach for most people. It should have included heroin overdose which is far easier to get hold of. Another book which covers a wider range of methods would be final exit.
I have certainly no objections in principle to a book like this being available. I believe that old people, whether in pain or not, have a right to end their life at their choosing. It’s amazing, thanks to improved medical care and a healthier diet and lifestyle, that longevity is now what it is. The corollary is that the quality of life deteriorates as one gets older and one needs more care and medical attention. I know of some elderly people who have become a small industry because of all the assistance they require. The care industry will continue to grow and woe betide any politician who says enough is enough for that sector. For me, I hope never to see the inside of an old person’s care home – a fate worse than death, which is why I would choose the latter. This book, revised yearly, offers alternative ways to end one’s life. But as some reviewers have noted, the drug of choice to achieve this, Nembutal, is very difficult to obtain. The authors claim that it is not available online, and that all the online ads are scams. Maybe amidst the scams there are a couple that are legitimate suppliers. And I notice that, even amongst the Goodread reviews for this book there is a scammer – David Reese. He even tries to connect Philip Nitschke with the scam. (Nitschke himself in his book says this is happening). There is a link in this scam to an online pharmacy – which even has favourable reviews from returning customers !!! I flagged this ‘review’ by David Reese as spam. But since it is dated very recently, it’s likely that has been removed before and keeps reappearing. Anyway flag it if you see it! Nembutal is produced in its powder form in China and I’m sure this product is available somewhere online, and certainly within some SE Asia countries. The book mentions Thailand where Nembutal is sometimes available. Chinese suppliers would have no scruples marketing this product to wherever they think there is demand. I was interested to read in the book about the Swiss euthanasia option, which is linked to Nitschke's organisation, Exit International. You can go to a euthanasia clinic in Switzerland and for EUR10,000 have the job done. All perfectly legal. In Switzerland - have money will travel ! Finally. as another reviewer mentions, ‘ Final Exit’ by Derek Humphry is another book worth looking at.
Highly informative about end of life choices for the elderly and those who are seriously ill. This isn't a book for sufferers of depression and as the book explains Help is out there. This is a guide to empowerment and knowledge for it and when it is strictly necessary. If you feel or suffer from depression or mental health issues PLEASE seek help rather than an exit strategy. I have found this book extremely helpful in more ways than one. Knowledge is power, hoping or trying for a way out blindly is destined to fail and most likely lead to more illness, pain, suffering and most of all failure. I personally do not advise taking any measures toward ending your life. Help is out there. Just ask for it.
5 stars for being super thorough and informative. -2 stars because of how dangerous this book is, especially in the hands of someone who, like myself, isn't old or terminally ill.
Most of information are old The book also gives high rate to morphine way while morphine not peaceful anyway because I used a lethal dose by mistake before and it was not easy
Content is mostly useful, but could improve on the structure and consistency.
The book does not really have a consistent rating system for preparation or time. Even though some methods were ranked low, I still think most people who are considering suicide will go for them as the safer methods involve medicine or equipment out of reach for most people. (Really, who can have the resources to create their own cyanide?)
It would also be helpful to have a consistent warning about when (only mentioned in the exit bag chapter) an intervention from a helper would become illegal.
I do not see why this book should be banned, it does not necessarily give practical advice for a peaceful exit. I am also of the opinion that introducing and becoming transparent with these issues wouldn't lead to an increase in suicide but safer methods for people who will go for them anyway.
Some people are suffering from major depression. It will definitely motivate them to successfully commit suicide..So i am against this book.Because many depressed and devastated people serch various option to die without pain. Fortunately, very few people know about this book But on the otherhand, some people who are fighting from stage 4 cancer and who are about to die with in a couple of months along with severe pain, to them it can be helpful as their loved ones can see them dying peacefully.
And some people can also use the compounds to kill someone.
So no one can ensure that book will be used only for euthnasia.
This is a highly informative book that details the least painful ways to end your life. I'm surprised, though, that Dr. Nitschke didn't include suicidal asphyxiation with a scuba diving mask and a nitrogen/helium/inert gas tank. It works better and more securely than a plastic bag with a nitrogen/helium/inert gas tank, though it is much more expensive and you generally need to become PADI certified to pull it off.
I cannot express how thankful I am for this book. I uplaud the bravery of the authors and organisation for publishing it and continuing to update it with new information and sources, despite all the criticism.
Informative but not greatly helpful, as the most effective methods it details are not attainable by most people. Also seems to have some medical inaccuracies. Better read for curiosity on the subject than practical use.
