I had the pleasure of hearing Vera Schlamm many years ago. She was friends with a woman who worked at the church I attended. I was certainly taken by her stories, I had never met a Jewish person who had converted to Christianity. I was reminded of her recently through a FB post and realized I had never read her book. I found a copy through Amazon, and found that her "voice" in the book was so similar to her presentation she did live. Her tales of what it was like before, during, and after a concentration camp remind us that we humans can do terrible, awful things to each other. The opportunities she found later in America remind us of a special role we can play in helping people start over after atrocities - so this is a timely read when so many refugees need a home now. Her courage to let herself explore a belief system, in spite of the protests of dear family, is inspiring.
