Out of the Dark #3

The Devil's Due

Rate this book
Live like the dead, or sleep like the dead? Dick makes his choice...

Dick is finally clean--mind and body--from his poisonous addiction, only to be sent reeling again upon awakening and discovering Steve and Jamie have startling secrets of their own. It will take every ounce of focus and resolve to shake off his new reality and make a trek to Arkansas to reunite with his wife and daughter, especially with the other challenges he faces along the way. He thought he was ready to face the world anew, until he realized the world was out to get him first.

Devil Dog III is the ending to the action-packed prepper thriller trilogy, filled with real-life gut-wrenching decisions, and a twist so sharp it may snap your neck.

Proceed with caution.

Dick has fought his addiction with the help of the compound doctor. He agrees to help Steve and his deputies get a better handle on their security setup. But, no matter what he does death and destruction follow. And, it seems that Steve and Jamie have secrets. Now, all Dick wants is to get to Arkansas.

Craven’s third book in the Out Of The Dark series, The Devil’s Due, is fraught with obstacles for Dick at every turn. Those that he seeks to help want to kill him. Heck, everyone seems to want to kill him. It has been that way since the very beginning of this series.

The ending is definitely a twist that I didn’t see coming even with all the clues that Craven sprinkled throughout these books. I’m sure he meant for it to be a shocker, but I found it to be a disappointment. That’s what happens when I want a certain ending and get something entirely different. Good series. And, I like the way it dovetails into the same story world as The World Burns series.

4 out of 5 stars.

A great book and series. I was a little disappointed with how the ending was forming but the final words changed my rating back to 5 stars.

Boyd Craven's Out Of The Dark series is another masterpiece of Post Apocalyptic fiction. Craven has the great gift of creating characters larger than life, complete with flaws and rough spots yet able to make you empathize with them through any situation. The main character in this series is a broken Vet who suffers the ravages of PTSD and is still able to "out hero" most any other character I have been fortunate enough to enjoy in my reading. Following him and the supporting characters through this series is a momentous event. I was sorry to reach the end of this journey. If you like well written series that grab and hold your attention, Boyd Craven is a master at creating them. I've read many of his works but the Out Of The Dark series is one of the best and I highly recommend that you read it.

The Devil's Due is the final book, and ending of the Out of the Dark trilogy. I would say that it's the best book of the series, and whilst you could probably read it stand alone you would be missing out on quite a bit of character depth and background to do so.

There's a bit more action in this book, in terms of defending the home of Jamie & Mel, as well as the ruptured internal politics as certain factions struggle with Dick's method of dealing with things, we then see Courtney & Dick head back out on the road where unforeseen revelations emerge. Initially it seemed like the ending was going to be a bit of a fizzler however it actually turned out to be quite a nice cap to the trilogy I felt.

Whilst I probably would not read the trilogy again, it was entertaining and a relatively quick read with each book being a mere 250 pages or so.

What an epic end to the series! Really, really good. Dick is damaged. He is fighting drug addiction, alcoholism, and PTSD. All he wants to do is get to his Mary and Maggie, whom he hopes and prays are still alive. He is a fighter, a Marine, a Devil Dog through and through. He fights his addictions and for the things all Supermen stand for, Truth, Justice, And the American Way of Life. Sometimes it’s sgainst seemingly unstoppable odds, but he perseveres. Even at the end, and he’s not who he believes he is. A great end to a great series. Boyd Craven can really weave a tale worth untangling!

I read the first book, and couldn't wait for more. The narrator is broken but trying to get better, just like the America in the series.A very good read.

I read the first book and couldn't wait to read all the others. The narrator is broken but trying to recover just like the America in the books. A great read.

O.M.G...what a ride this one was! I'd love to say I saw it coming, but it would be a lie.
Lots of action, many miles traveled, a veritable roller coaster ride.
I laughed, I cried; some serious "dust" in this one. Even a GoT reference, and ya gotta love that.
L.O.V.E.D the ending, for sure, but Dammit Boyd!

Better

The tone of the series changes with this book. Jamie & Mel are home now & Dick is feeling somewhat lost. However, bad guys still need to be dealt with & the darkness kept at bay.

Apocalypse now

The United States was hit by EMT causing all electronics to fail. Then, it was attacked by ISIS and N Korea. With no electricity, no food , and without clean water 80 percent of the population was lost through those things and predation.

Somewhat satisfying conclusion to a intriguing series.

I literally read through the entire trilogy in three days. The entire saga flowed and keeps you on the edge of your seat turning the pages.

Great series

Man. What a great series.. Characters that are real that you love and a story line that's unreal. The ending was a surprise and I would have loved one more book. Some books are 5 stars but some books like this one deserve more then just five stars.

This book can be summed up in one word: Wow.

This is the best book of the series, the best book by Craven, and possibly the best book of the genre. The complexity of the series becomes evident in this episode. Add the depth of the main character, the emotional wallop... Wow.

Bravo!

Loved this trilogy! A hard bitten devil dog finds his future during the apocalypse. PTSD keeps his nightmares alive but his actions are that of a moral good man. He must fight his way through dark times to save good people. Finally getting his salvation!

A great series

Boyd writes his characters as if you know them like a friend or family. They seem so real. The main characters might be tough but always do the right thing.

There is something about Craven's writing that I really. Whatever it is, it's just really good. Although his books are pretty short, they just seem to hit the spot. Maybe it's how the story plays out and how the characters are well fleshed out and the action is or it could be how the protagonist is capable.

Nevertheless, this is just really good. However, I was surprised though how the book played out. I was expecting it to go one way but it didn't. It wasn't too bad the ending, but I thought I new how it was going to end.

So great book and all that. Give it a shot if you like action with some thoughtfulness in it.

A great ending to a fantastic trilogy!

Dick is once again, recovering and still trying to get back to his wife and daughter in Arkansas. He begins to find that he's not the only one dealing with secrets in this post-apocalyptic nightmare of a world. His friends are there to help him, but government forces are not letting anyone relax and feel safe.

As his journey continues, so much more will be brought to light on how he ended up in Chicago when all of this began. Will he finally make it back to his loved ones? And will he be welcomed or rejected from the ones he's been desperate to be united with?

An incredible adventure with action, humor, and non-stop badassery! The characters are so alive in this story and while this book brings the ending of a journey (which I'm still conflicted with), I'm looking forward to more of Mr. Craven's writing!! And the hopes that he will entwine some of these stellar characters into other series. Basically because I'm not ready for it all to be done! Well written and extremely enjoyable. Another series that I highly recommend.

Our protagonist Dick Pershing is clean & sober once again. After his rescue from the DHS at the end of book two we find him recovering at the farm of Steve and Jamie. Throughout the book Dick has reoccurring problems recognizing women and girls as his wife and daughter due to his PTSD. This “little” problem causes him to be punched, stabbed, and nearly killed several times, besides the ongoing battle with DHS and NATO forces. Eventually it’s time for Dick to pack his bags and head home to Arkansas. Dick does make it home and with a stunning surprise twist can finally relax and make plans for his future. This was an excellent story and a fine ending to a great trilogy. Kevin Pierce made it all the more pleasurable as usual.

Dick and Mike

I have been waiting impatiently for the final segment to come out. I woke up and my preordered book was sitting right in my kindle ready for me to devour.

The book. Fast paced. Intense. I absolutely loved the characters. What I like about Boyd Craven's books is I feel like he is telling me a story about real people. Events that could happen---and in this book did happen. Dick's life is a roller coaster ride that I didn't want to get off from. The ending was not what I expected. It was better than I imagined.

Spoiler alert in Chapter 14 for all you Walking Dead fans. Enjoy the book as much as I!

Wonderful read

Dick Pershing is the world's biggest badass. Courtney ain't to shabby either. I will admit I'm very sad Devil Dog is done, bit I can't wait to hear from him in As the World Burns. The Cravens are amazing writers
