Duel of Fire

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B01DO6QIZW

Throne of Glass meets A Knight's Tale in this swashbuckling fantasy adventure full of magic, swordplay, and romance.

Dara Ruminor is a serious young duelist in the mountaintop kingdom of Vertigon, a land of dramatic cliffs and misty peaks where mysterious Fire magic runs through the stones like blood. The secluded kingdom has been peaceful for a hundred years. Swords are used for sport, and successful athletes live like kings as long as the crowds love them.

Eighteen-year-old Dara needs to find a wealthy patron in order to duel professionally and avoid a lifetime working in her parents’ Fire Lantern shop. Her efforts are disrupted when her coach asks her to train with Prince Siv, an infuriating—if handsome—young man who refuses to take the sport as seriously as she does. But the prince’s life may be in danger, and soon Dara will discover that Vertigon isn’t as peaceful as she thought.

As threats emerge from the shadows, Dara will have to raise her sword to protect Siv—if he doesn’t irritate her so much that she decides to run him through herself.

From the author of the Seabound Chronicles comes a new fantasy series about sword fighting, cur-dragons, molten Fire magic, and one young woman’s effort to prove herself.

Don't start reading this late at night thinking you can just read a few chapters and put it down! I stayed up way too late, devouring the story of Dara, a young woman trying to establish herself as a professional duelist. Set in the mountaintop kingdom of Vertigon, the world of the duelists is fascinating, and will have you itching to take up fencing.

But Dara's life is not just about swordfighting. This is a refreshingly different coming of age tale, as Dara struggles to avoid the life her parents have mapped out for her. As she grows closer to the charming but slightly immature prince, they both discover that their peaceful mountain kingdom hides dark shadows, and Dara is forced to wield her sword for real.

This is a great swashbuckling adventure, and all the more fun for the fact that the one buckling the most swash is a girl. Dara is a great character, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

This book is really similar to but also completely different from other ya books that I’ve read.
It was really similar in the way that it was super predictable because of all of the almost tropes. It was pretty obvious that . The characters also felt kind of basic at times.
One of my favorite things about the book was probably the magic system, which was unlike any other that I’ve read. I loved the idea of people wielding fire, but only to make things. It does make me curious whether there are people in other countries that can wield other elements.

I was expecting a lot more from this book after Merphy on Booktube hyped the hell out of this book on her channel.
I wish this book was mind blowing but it was just an average read for me.

The MCs were very bland. They did not stand out to me and I don’t feel any kind of true attraction between them. The political scene is a bit convoluted and there seems to be a bit of mystery thrown in the book to add some suspense but it just makes me scratch my head. There were some really good fight scenes that happened so that was a plus and actually enjoyed the prince’s siblings as their commentary was amusing at times too.

I’ll not be continuing this series as I think there are better series, like Defy by Sara B Larson, that have stronger plots and better character development than this book.

I think I have the unpopular opinion vote here so I recommend that you try it yourself to see if it fits.

Happy Reading

I enjoyed this book a lot so much so that I read book two immediately after, which I liked as well. That being said I don't know if I'll read the rest of the series. I am one of those people that don't mind spoilers so I went and read all the blurbs for the coming books, I don't really like the direction its going. In fact that is one of my pet peeve

Dara is tasked with dueling against the prince for practice so obviously a relationship starts. From a low born wanting to be the champion needing to be the champion dueler to falling for the prince one blade at a time.

I wanted more action and less sitting around drinking ale.

This book felt really simplistic and straightforward and predictable and yet. . . I still kinda liked it? I DID like it -- it wasn't awesome or anything, but totally good enough to keep going.

This is definitely a slow burn. For some reason I assumed the dueling would be overshadowed by the danger and threats to the peace sooner, but dueling remained the primary plot until the end while the (frankly fascinating) politics and the real danger were mostly subplot, as well as the romance. There were some points I got a bit impatient and either took a break or was tempted to skim, but I think that might have just been my mood. Overall, it did hold my attention and was enjoyable with lots of great moments and am I ready to jump into the next book in the series. I do really love Dara and Siv. The "super driven girl who takes things too seriously" and "bit of a party boy who does care but also could take things more seriously" pairing is certainly tropey (as is "mutual pining because we both know this can't work"), but it's fun. The trope of "uptight parents who don't understand their kid and kid is overshadowed by older sibling's death" is a less fun trope. Not that it didn't work, it just was kinda irritating and depressing to me. Dara is a bit oblivious to some political things, although it made sense narrative and character-wise even though it was a little frustrating as the reader, and I have questions about why she doesn't share something at the end of the book. As far as the plot goes, I feel like there were only two or three major plot points (one of which was related to the dueling and not actually a plot twist) that I didn't call before even starting the book based on the title, (new, not on Goodreads) cover, and sequel's title, which certainly wasn't a bad thing, but I think it did contribute to my occasional impatience. I'm kinda hoping/assuming the rest of the series will be a bit more intrigue and danger and maybe a little faster paced now that the groundwork is done. There were some random things that sometimes distracted me ("Sheesh" and other very relaxed, modern-sounding expressions which would have stood out less had they not been beside other characters with super stilted dialogue, how often people's names were alliterative or rhymed) and I'll admit to being slightly tripped up at in some scenes where I was less focused by all the royal siblings having S names. The world was so cool, though--the magic system, the politics, the geography, all really sucked me in. A lot of the side characters have great potential, so looking forward to seeing more of them. Overall, it was good read, and I'm glad I finally gave this series a shot.

I'm honestly very very very pleasantly surprised by how this book turned out.

I picked it up because it sounded interesting enough, but I haven't been blown away by any YA books recently and therefore haven't felt compelled to write any reviews for them.

But then this book came along

description

First and foremost, Siv. Dear God. This prince absolutely stole my heart. In the beginning, he is painted as very rambunctious and charming. He just wants to have fun until he becomes King.

" "I hear he spends most of his time drinking in the parlors in Lower King's. He's bound to enjoy other frivolous activities too." "

I scrunched my nose at this, a handsome rake of a prince who doesn't take his royal duties seriously? How surprising. But despite the cliche, I continued reading.

But ohhhh does dear Prince Sivarrion prove me wrong.

His love for his sisters and his willingness to carry out his royal duties despite what he wants both surprised me and delighted me.

" The thought of Dara sent a painful jolt through Siv's chest, but he endured it. Duty. He would bear his duty with as much dignity as he could muster. "

And I love the friendship between Dara, Siv and Selivia!

" The prince stood up, revealing that he was wearing all black once again. He reached for something at his feet, and Selivia helped him unfurl a strip of black satin. It was a banner nearly the length of the royal box with the word Nightfall painted in gold across it. The crowd noticed whom the royal family was supporting, and their shouts reached a fevered pitch. "

Dara is a driven and passionate young woman with so much tenacity, she doesn't give up on what she loves. It's endearing and I couldn't help but love this intense protagonist.

" She wanted to be the best. She had trained for years, sweating through intense workout sessions, fighting opponent after opponent in an effort to show her worth as a duelist. She would not ease up in the final stretch. "

And the romance
description

It wasn't a huge part of the book, but there was just enough to make you swoon. But it is a very slow burn.

" His love, his undying loyalty, his wish that he could throw himself onto a blade for her if she'd look at him the way he looked at her. He wanted to lay the whole kingdom of Vertigon at her feet for a smile. He desperately wanted to kiss her proud, intense mouth. "

The book isn't so slow moving that I couldn't continue, but it wasn't exactly action packed until the last 20% of the book. Nevertheless, I thought the pacing was perfect and I really enjoyed reading this.

And that ending.
description

I really don't know how I didn't find this book sooner, but I'm really glad I have the full series at my disposal now rather than having to wait for the next book.

Anywho, would I recommend this book? If you hadn't already deduced it by now, the answer is a resounding YES. Go read it right now! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to read the next book.

This was good!

Dara’s family has the firepower, and it is expected for each generation to take up the legacy of their forefathers. However, when Dara’s older sister (who was perfecting her fire skill) is killed, the family looks to her….however…Dar does not have the fire power-no matter how hard she tries.

Once her parents finally seem to accept that she simply does not have the skill, Dara pours herself into sword fighting and becomes really great at it despite her parent’s disapproval.

Dara is appointed to be the young Prince’s sparring partner, but the more they spend time together, the closer their friendship becomes.

There are rumours of a coup floating about, but with no concrete information, there is little anyone can do.

Some language included: 3 a words, 10 d words, 3 uses of hell (I think….the numbers might be slightly off)

One of the things I really enjoyed from this book was the relationship that Dara and Vine had. It flipped the stereotype of girls hating other girls because they’re seen as competition.

Decent Kindle Unlimited book. It was a little frustrating how she never put the pieces together about what was happening around her... but it was still an interesting story with likeable characters and interesting plot.

I have a hard time trying to finish Duel of Fire.
I'm not sure what it is that make this book so boring. Other than some of Siv and Dara dual practice everything is just so bland be it the tone or the narration.....I lost interest in the middle of the book.

Part II
My daughter insisted so I gritted my teeth and have a go with Duel of Fire.
Surprisingly the last 20% of the book was pretty fun and not so boring like the first half that I had read. IMOP the story is fun but the writing is .... I don't know, it's not monotonous but also not vibrant especially when describing the world and its magic. However I do like the sword fighting thing because it's very detail and pretty much the only thing that comes to life in the book. Duel of Fire is a decent read if you could get past the not-so-interesting first half of the book. I couldn't say if it's worth it or not but I'm glad my daughter pushed me to finish.
All 3 stars for the real action and a more concrete conspiracy with some romance toward the end.

Wow! I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The description sounded intriguing if not terribly novel, but I ended up just getting sucked in by the characters in this book! I even stayed up until 2am one night to finish (so be warned before you get started).

Dara, our heroine, is the daughter of Fireworkers, skilled magical artisans of fire. However, unlike her magic wielding parents, Dara has no spark of magic and is instead captivated by the world of dueling. She is determined to find a patron and create a life for herself as a professional duelist. So naturally she is quite put out when recruited by her trainer to act as a partner to the notoriously flighty crown prince.

I found Dara to be a wonderful protagonist! I loved her work ethic and her down to earth personality (so uncommon in many YA novels). I also found the dynamic between Dara and the crown prince Siv delightful to read. I can't wait to see where this series goes!

I am pleasantly surprised. A strong kick-ass heroine? Check. A charming prince? Check. Disapproving parents? Check. An air of impending doom? No. Just kidding, YES! Dara is a young duelist in pursuit of a patron that could provide for her future training but for that she needs to win the big tournament. She is skilled, smart and fast on her feet but in the middle of her training her coach asks her (or rather demands) that she start training with Prince Siv. He is undisciplined and lazy, the total opposite of Dara. Despite this, he is still a very talented duelist. As you can guess these two form some sort of relationship. Even though not much happened, with the fire magic, Dara's determination, the cute little dragons and unanswered questions, Duel of Fire is a great start to what I hope will be an amazing series.

This book was so much fun and a great beginning to a series. This is the first book I have read that focuses on sword fighting and duels as the main character's passion and hopeful career path. I found that part of the book fascinating. The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was because the first half was a bit slow moving. But once I reached the middle I couldn't put it down. The action was so fast paced and the ending was amazing!

This was a pretty big hit, though I guessed it might be. A reviewer I like also loved this book.

The characters are what drew me in. The plot was fine, the action serviceable, but the characters were intriguing. I want to know more and am willing to follow them into more books. The MC is a little bland at times, but she was very determined and I love a character who has a very clear want. She also was a badass because she's been practicing hard for much of her life. It makes perfect sense she's good at dueling. She's constantly practicing, working towards her goal. This book also managed to have a good YA story WITHOUT petty girl on girl hate and/or girl getting assaulted and saved by love interest. You have no idea how many points that earns this book!

Her relationship with the prince was very predicable, but it was nice to have a guy who wasn't a broody bad boy. Bit of a spoiled jerk at first, but he recovered quickly. It was also refreshing to see a royal willing to do what his country needs without hesitation. We love to see it.

I will probably be picking up the next book in this series some day. The ending was definitely setting you up for that, which is one reason I knocked off a star. The end just peters out and might as well have ended with a "see you next book!"

This books falls right in the middle with a reluctant yet lukewarm three stars. I’m surprised to see so many reviews call it unique or creative because my main criticism of this story is that it wasn’t unique or creative at all 😬

Maybe my standards are just set too high having read so much fantasy already, but I really thought this story was so linear and predictable from the start. I also didn’t get invested in the characters and frankly the magic system was SO disappointing.

But I think it was just... it was just fine I guess idk. I won’t continue the series

Hmm, what to say. It's a quick read, very light. I was forewarned about the urban language used in an old time setting (ex. I didn't win as I choked) so I tried not to be bothered by this. If it's something that would be jarring for you I recommend not reading this book. The heroine Dara doesn't have much depth, she is focussed on becoming a career duelist and that's it, we don't learn much more about her. Prince Siv isn't much better, the usual "oh it's so boring learning to run a kingdom, I just want to have fun". So pages of Dara going to duelling practice and Siv doing not much. About halfway through things start to happen except that it's too late, you know what the outcome will be and I found I wasn't much interested. The author also repeats details, which I find annoying. I can remember that one character is tall and one person is bad due to x without having it told to me over and over. So overall it wasn't particularly exciting, nothing that would encourage me to continue the series.

4.5 stjerner!
Anbefaler boka!

I really enjoyed this. It was good fun. It was very predictable and the characters are very basic but I had fun reading this book. I'd recommend if you want a light fantasy read. The characters are all likeable even though they are pretty stereotypical. And the dueling aspect of this book puts a fun little twist on things.

This book was a quick fun read. Sword fighting, magic, and a funny prince? I knew I'd like it before reading--and I totally did.

Set in a fantasy world, Duel of Fire is filled with new concepts and strong characters. Dara Ruminor is an eighteen-year old duelist who is serious about her work. And Prince Sivarrion (Siv) is ... well... less serious about his. But due to fate--and the storyline--the two must work together to defeat a secret threat before it defeats them.

Too bad they don't really get along--at first.

Dara and Siv are both captivating and wholesome characters who are so relatable I feel we can be friends. Dara is a duelist, yes--but she's also trying to escape a family business and a future of painful memories. And Siv, though a young prince, is out to prove himself with his family heritage. They are different, but complimentary. They know what they should and shouldn't do--and that's refreshing. Their relationship is a natural process that had me smirking every time things didn't go down the typical YA romance route. All those interruptions and misunderstandings!

Although I really liked the characters, I wish I felt the same about the world building. Don't get me wrong, I did like it... but it still felt somewhat lacking. I didn't know what it meant to be a citizen of Vertigon or to come from the distant land of Trure. What made the people different from each other? I didn't find out and that bothered me a bit.

The story wasn't action-packed throughout, as I thought it would be, but it still managed to maintain my interest. And that's all I really care about. There's lots of politics, suspense, and promised danger that actually pays off. The plot is well-structured, and the pacing just right, that it felt natural to read and continue reading. I could easily picture what was happening and where.

OVERALL: 4/5
Definitely recommended to fantasy-lovers who are tired of cliché romances. It hasn't received as much attention as it deserves.

Dara is a duelist (think fencing). Her whole life she has trained to be the very best (that no one ever was)

to make up for not having the ability to wield fire like her prestigious father and late sister. As one of her the best, her coach orders her to train with the lazy and extremely cocky crown prince. While they have their differences, they learn to work together in the face of conspiracy, death and turmoil all very close to home.

I was really excited about starting this book and it was pretty good. Dara had a one mind track but slowly grew to understand that there is more too life than training. She learns about friendship, and loyalty, and learning to be someone other than just the tense duelist that know one pays attention to.

Siv, the prince is such a fun character, he is silly and laid back where Dara is tense and very straight forward. They play off each other well. I also really liked Siv's sisters who were smart and well thought out characters in their own right, though I would like to see the older sister, Sora step up more in the next book.

In general, I would like to see more characters fleshed out in book 2. Dara and Siv were okay, but really we don't know much about them. Siv is frivolous but cares about his kingdom, Dara wants her parents' appreciation and to be a duelist for a living. What else there was didn't really show who they were and thus, didn't endear me to them.

Sometimes, there was just too much description about a certain setting or mundane tasks. I really don't care for a 2 page description on a room. I just don't. This in particular made it hard to read sometimes and made me consider DNFing, but I'm glad I didn't because the end was so worth it. THE INTRIGUE. THE BETRAYAL. READ IT!!!!

Ooooh I'm intrigued, I'll probably be reading on soon!

I'm giving this one 3 1/2 stars because I didn't like the first half that much. I thought the writing was very telling and not enough showing, and there was a lot of info dumping on how systems work and descriptions of the castle structure. I didn't find these things important! Also, I understand that this was about dueling, and I loved Dara's fierceness, I just didn't love how 90% of this book is dueling - and somehow the plot seemed to drag on and on. A mystery was lacking for the most part until about 75% into the book. Also, personal opinion but I thought Dara was dry and if you'd stack her in with a whole bunch of YA heroines, I wouldn't be able to pick her out because her voice doesn't scream this is Dara. I did enjoy Siv, but at times I felt like he was too immature.

The writing is very straightforward, and I appreciated that to an extent. I wish the entire book had the same vibe the second half of the book had! I'm intrigued about Dara and Siv's relationship, and because of my curiosity, I'll definitely put the next book on my TBR! I truly believe that this is one of those series that only gets better as it progresses - if the latter half of book one is any indication! Definitely pick this up if you need something quick to read!

this was a nice surprise.

a little slow and a bit boring at the beginning but it definitely gets better by the end.

Dara is a strong female with clear principles and Siv it's just a bundle of flirtatious joy. the end was pretty sad, though. poor Siv :(

there isn't much on the enemies motives or reasons. I mean a few things get mentioned but it isn't overly developed (in my opinion anyway) but hopefully we see more of that.

This was a fun, fast-paced fantasy that’s good for YA readers or those trying to find accessible adult fantasy. If sword dueling competitions, fire magic, conspiracies, and romance sounds like your thing, then this book is for you. While I found it somewhat predictable, I didn’t call all the stops, and it ended in a place I’m realllly happy with. I am incredibly encouraged to pick up book 2 soon!
