Untouchable

Rate this book
Dr. Emma Rothenberg is the most feared professor at Overland University because of her failure rate. Laramie "Ramie" Sunderlund is a senior art major, desperate to earn three lousy English credits to graduate.

Thrown together in a battle of wills, the two women grudgingly establish a measure of respect for one another during one long semester. Emma is a lonely woman of forty-five who occasionally risks her career with dangerous liaisons.

Ramie faces unwanted advances from Rothenberg's graduate assistant, resulting in an assault that threatens her future as a sculptress. Relieved when the semester ends and Ramie leaves to recuperate at home, Emma is suddenly faced with the fact that she misses the woman with curly blonde hair and deep blue eyes who occupied an aisle seat on the third row. She was also a young woman half her age, virtually a child. The notion of anything between them is ridiculous.

When Ramie returns to the university a decade later as the artist-in-residence, Emma is shocked that the younger woman seems interested in actively pursuing her. Against the objections of parents, friends, and colleagues, and despite their own reservations, what are these two very different women willing to sacrifice to find the happiness both are seeking?

Originally from the Appalachian region of Eastern Tennessee, Brenda now lives in Central Texas, near Austin. She began writing in junior high school where she wrote an admittedly hokey western serial to entertain her friends. Completing her graduate studies in Eastern European history in 1971, she worked as a graphic artist, a public relations specialist for the military and a display advertising specialist until she finally had to admit that her mother might have been right and earned her teaching certification. For the last twenty-plus years she has taught world history and political science.

Brenda and her partner, Cheryl, have four grown children and three grandchildren. Rounding out their home are three temperamental cats and two dogs.

When she is not writing Brenda creates stained glass and shoots pool at her favorite bar. She is looking forward to retirement in 2013 and a move back to Knoxville, Tennesse, and her roots.

I enjoyed the first half. I liked the characters and found the chemistry was perfect. The second half for me felt like a different book in some ways. I felt the chemistry had disappeared and the actions of the characters were just over dramatic and too much for me. I felt whiplash in their emotions from their interactions. I was disappointed in the end so much potential.

I enjoyed this book and will read more by this author in the future. My only dislike is that the book just ended and it frosted over some of the deeper feelings that one would expect from the subject matter that the characters dealt with during the book.

WOW!!!

What a great book! It kept going and going giving you more and more within each part of the plot(s). The characters were so richly developed and the ending of the story felt just right where it was supposed to be!! Very well done!!!
