A story of three very different women, inextricably bound together by their relationship with one man ...
In 1945, country girl Shirley Bell falls passionately in love with Peter, a German prisoner of war, but then he is repatriated. When Shirley finds she is expecting his child, she is glad to accept an offer of marriage from kind, sensible Gareth.
Delia Shenstone, Shirley's best friend, becomes a brilliant example of what a determined career woman can achieve in a man's world. But privately Delia has her own share of heartache.
Growing up in a small Midlands town, Shirley's daughter, Jenny, determines to make a success of her life while seeking out her natural father.
