Natalia Bello is a witch on the hunt for a vampire sacrifice that'll keep an ancient evil off her back. When her mark is stolen, she has only a few days to find better prey, or it's her own life on the line. But there's something about the mysterious vamp she's chosen and Natalia can't resist the heat between them long enough to kill him.
An ancient vampire known only as M. strikes fear in the hearts of all the undead. He's a legend, the boogeyman—a hunter of his own kind. He's wandered the world alone for so long, he can't resist the lure but it's the supreme deceit when he finds out who she is—what she is—and the hex she wrought on him.
Torn apart by betrayal, but united in a pact of magick and bloodlust for their own survival, they're led deep into a magnificent Egyptian underworld where nothing is what it seems and the only way out is to end a centuries-old curse.
Alyssa Breck is an award-winning author of horror, paranormal romance and erotic fiction. She grew up reading Stephen King and V.C. Andrews. BIG DISCLAIMER: I edited this novel, so I can't give a rating. I'll say this much, that the novel goes places one doesn't quite expect and yeah, if lust-fuelled interactions between a witch and a vampire are your kind of kink, then go to it. What I particularly loved was the depiction of a massive, underground city of vampires beneath the Egyptian desert. Some lovely details there and a wonderful expansion of an existing universe for those who're au fait with Carrie Clevenger's Crooked Fang novels.
Paranormal stories about witches don't usually interest me, and vampire characters are a dime a dozen, but Alyssa Breck earned her 4 stars from me with solid writing and dynamic character development. I was immediately drawn into the story and my interest was consistently piqued. The connection between the main characters intensified with each passing interlude, but the viability of their compatibility was constantly challenged. There were no gratuitous obstacles introduced to derail the story. The plot unfolded swiftly with just the right amount of suspense.
In Hex Appeal two enemies from different worlds share the same bloodlust and cross paths in this paranormal story. Both vampire and witch are powerful hunters zeroing in on the same mark. When Magnus, or "M" the ancient vampire, eliminates Natalia's would be prey, she pursues M in order to reclaim her sacrifice. This time, after nearly 300 years in the biz, Natalia is reluctant to close the deal. They form a bond and set out to destroy a common enemy and her evil curse. This may sound like straight up cloak and dagger, but in this story, we also get a glimpse of what's under the cloak while these two satisfy their bloodlust along the way. Wink, wink.
While I appreciate the lack of a cliffhanger, there were some unresolved aspects that left me wanting more. After committing myself to the thrill of the chase and all the intrigue, I found the ending to be anti-climactic. A few things remained open-ended while another issue was too quickly resolved and dismissed. Finding out about the history of the characters was a wonderful part of the story-telling throughout, however the author alluded to quite a few circumstances but never revealed their entire meaning. I guess that means I want more! And that's how you know you read a good book.
The book ended much more interesting than I thought it would. It was a unique twist on the idea of vampires, witches and hunters. I alternated between hoping they'd be victorious and hoping they'd all kill each other, which might just be cuz I've been in a mood this week. There is a TON of hot, steamy, detail intense sex. I know many of my friends that would love this book. I liked it though I wasn't in love with the plot, though I think it may well be me and my moods more than the book.
Hang on for the ride of your life!!! Witches, vampires, oh my. These authors were new to me and I can't wait for more from both of them.
