Authors René Banglesdorf and Lisa Copeland climbed to the top of two male-dominated industries-- namely aviation and automotive--and wrote a book on how to continuously raise the bar and never settle for the standard.

This book was showcased at the Women in Automotive conference in Orlando several years ago, and the title was so intriguing that I thought I should give it a shot. I'll admit it was not very focused on in-depth on any one topic, and I felt like it was more of a diary with anecdotes --only some being relatable.

Maybe I didn’t give it a fair shot because I read this after “You are a Badass,” which is pretty damn hard to follow. That being said, here were a few key nuggets I found helpful when trying to exceed expectations and fulfill your potential.

Identify Your Purpose: Simon Sinek said it best, but the book reinforced the importance of asking ‘why’? Why are you here? It outlined how to start living a life with purpose. Ask a circle of friends / colleagues to name your most significant, unique quality. Next, jot down things you are most passionate about. From there, it’s almost a ‘match the phrase’ game where you can see how your strengths and favorite things collide. In that small sliver is where your ‘why’ lies, and you should relentlessly pursue a career that lives in that space.

Building Character On and Off the Field: Don’t be one way at the office and another way in public. We see this all the time with politicians and those in the public eye, but I think it’s refreshing and important to see someone who is the same way at work as they are out in the grocery store. This could be small things like manners all the way down to how you treat others. Especially those who can’t do anything ‘for’ you.’ Be unapologetically you. The perfect workplace will embrace you for you and celebrate your uniqueness.

You are Not ‘Owed’ a Legacy. You Must Build One: Taking this a step further than the obvious (and controversial) millennial perceptions, I think this is important in regards to character consistency. Just because you killed it in high school doesn’t mean anything once you get to college. Just because you won every scholarship under the sun in college doesn’t guarantee a spot at your dream job. And when you finally land in a position you love at a company you are proud to be a part of, that doesn’t mean you can get comfortable. My all-time favorite quote is “you must abandon what’s comfortable to discover what’s possible.”

Remain Teachable: Never stop learning, stay humble in regards to respecting authority and always seek mentors. When you are mature enough in your career, always pay it forward by organically mentoring others.

Use Your Influence For Good: This is my favorite part of the book - use you power to help others. Whatever your superpower is, whatever your position is, figure out a way to embrace opportunities that benefit mankind and humanity. Helping others always feeds your soul and there is no better way to stay motivated than creating something, or assisting in something that leaves an impact on the world.

Other tips included Exiting Your Comfort Zone, Owning Your Choices, Operate Together, Repurpose Your Fears and Recover From Failure.
